She’s the first one to spot him.

He’s standing beside Lasky and Hood, legs shoulder width apart and brow furrowed in concentration as he forces himself to stand in spite of all the exhaustion and agony she can see written plainly on his face. His shoulders are bowed and his gaze unfocused on either officer, and that’s when she knows there’s something very wrong with him. He’s staring past the conversation in front of him, past the bulkhead and out to the stars hidden from view, and she can’t possibly guess at whatever’s left him standing broken in the middle of Infinity’s bridge. 

She thinks at first that this is a dream; she can’t get his name out of her mouth, and any command she gives to her legs to run, to sprint to him and hold the pieces of him falling apart on the deck close together don’t work, but then he looks at her, snapped out of his thousand-yard stare, and she knows she didn’t dream this. There’s a flash of warm recognition when he sees her, so familiar it makes her heart ache and her mind doubt what she’d seen, but that moment before he’d recognized her, his eyes had been empty and dim, and she’d never seen anything so terrifying.
