That moment is the most pure of any in Merlin, there’s a deadly battle going on, people are dying and all the characters we love are filled with violence and hatred. But on the other side, there is Merlin, who has gone through all of this stress and pain to get his magic back and save Arthur… And the first thing he does is make butterflies. So small and beautiful and that look he has in his eyes I just… Gah.

and it describes perfectly merlin’s character. to him, it’s not about showing off, about prestice or power or even about revenge. no. to merlin, magic is life. he is magic, and from the disir episode we learn what he has instinctively known since he was born. that magic can be found in all living beings, that it surrounds their very existence in albion. and it hurt him, to be cut off from that when his magic was taken away. all his life he had been in tune with it, with life and with nature. and suddenly not being able to feel it anymore, it must have felt to him like losing one of his senses

colin morgan is amazing and he perfectly captures that raw, humble joy at even the smallest living being that defines merlin so. i love this scene
