the fact that socmed apps like X/Twitter and Instagram have no actual way or feature for hiding your follower count (unless you go 3rd party and even then, it would just hide it on your device, but it's still technically public. and I repeat, follower count--as in the number--and not the follower list, those are two different things) or being able to not have to see everyone else's is truly what makes them all the more insidious, imo

they can implement AI at the drop of a hat, but a simple hide mechanic that would actually help a lot of people's mental health and reduce the competitive nature of these sites?

seeing other people's follower counts and encouraging this arbitrary numbers game is truly something dystopian and so tiring
