Some tips for writing a character with actual Narcissistic Personality Disorder (these are based off my experience so it doesn't apply to everyone)
-insecurity is a huge thing in NPD, so being competitive in things they enjoy even if the thing itself isn't directly competitive (like drawing or acting) and not meeting their own expectations of being the best (even if they're praised by others) can make them angry, defensive or depressed
-a lot of people with NPD mask, staying humble even while having a big ego just to keep a good reputation (though some like having a negative reputation, being seen as evil or a villian, but it doesn't apply to all) so they'll pretend to be nice even if they view others as below them just to seem nice or to feel like a good person
-manipulation also tends to be pretty common, whether it's consciously or not, things like, guilt tripping when they don't get what they want, having a victim complex or lying about things for sympathy or to make themselves look better, sometimes it's on purpose, sometimes it's just an unconscious response that they don't even realize is actually manipulation
-god complex, savior complex, hero complex, sometimes they'll do something just to seem like a better person even if they don't actually care, like comforting someone even if they have no empathy or sympathy for the person or situation, to be the hero or savior to them and keep a good reputation of being a "nice person"
-an intense need for attention and needing to be seen how they want to be seen, like if a character thinks of themselves as cool, mysterious and intimidating, they'd get angry or annoyed if they're not viewed that way by others and will try to do more and act differently to be viewed in that way
-sometimes having very transactional relationships, keeping people around that they hate or dislike for whatever they can offer, like if another character is popular, they might hate them but they stick around to keep the popularity that comes with being around/friends with them
I havenāt read this essay in⦠twelve years? I think? But someone (ETA: that someone was @whetherwoman who deserves the credit) linked it today and rereading it was a) a treat and b) honestly really helpful. If you, like me, want to write smut but often find it difficult, this essay may help a LOT.
Reblogging this as I periodically do because itās still relevant (especially with so many new writers coming into fandom spaces who are SO ENTHUSIASTIC but maybe need some pointers?) and because I myself need the reminder. Wherever you are, Res, I hope youāre doing great.
The tips are on ao3 now, and Iām Res but on tumblr.

Four tips for creating better sex scenes in erotic romance.
hello to anyone still following this blog. sorry about just going into another (semi-)hiatus without a heads up. everything is fine, college is just time consuming lmao.
anyway, I don't want to make any promises about coming back soon because. well. it's not like I dropped out, although I did drop a class today because my mental health hasn't been as great this semester and I just haven't been able to keep up with it. I've also figured out that my mental health being so shittty lately might be because I haven't engaged in much creative writing stuff since the last time I published a fanfic.
tldr: I am actually going to make an effort to get back into writing again (for fun, not because I feel like I'm obligated to), but I'm not going to promise that I'll be publishing anything soon. thank you for your patience <3
okay elipsus is choosing today of all days to give me problems so I'm just going to change the formatting for my currently posted yandere alphabets because what I already have is lowkey hard to read while I wait for it to sort itself out

Boring tired disclaimer: Keep in mind that this is an introductory "drawing" "tutorial" and has some generalizations in it, so not every āX is Zā statement will be true for Actual People. Which happens to be true for everything in general. Links below so that you can research and do a nuance. Ones that were directly mentioned are bolded.

As a lot of people arenāt familiar with plot creatures, I thought Iād shed some light on the members of the mental menagerieā¦
The Plot Bunny - Story ideas that come bounding in and start multiplying.
The Plot Chicken - They squawk, flap around, and shit everywhere, but when you actually need to do something with them, they scatter.
The Plot Sloth - Takes its sweet goddamned time turning into something useful.
The Plot Mule - When you mash two plots together and get something cool, but you canāt get a sequel out of it to save your life.
The Plot Cat - Lazy little bastards who take up your headspace, scare away all the other plot bunnies, but wonāt actually do anything except lay there.
The Plottweiler - Barks loudly and viciously so you canāt ignore it, distracts you from everything else you want to write, but leaves you too paralyzed with fear to actually put words down.
The Plot Squirrel - Cute, distracting, full of nuts, and just TRY to keep up with that train of thought.
The Plot Bedbug - Shows up during the night, chews on you so you canāt sleep, and disappears in the daylight.
The Plot Tick - Burrows in, bleeds you dry, and leaves you with the creepy-crawlies. Mostly preys on horror writers.
The Plotroach - Totally unappealing, but so tenacious theyāll survive anything until you finally give up and write them.
I did not create the alphabet used here, I just used the first one I found; all credit goes to the original creator. There is one NSFW prompt, but I was vague when filling it out since I already wrote NSFW headcanons for everyone + I plan on filling out the actual NSFW alphabet for everyone eventually.
Once again, thank you @/pelibirdie's for the motivation, and y'all should still go read their work.
I added the "x Reader" tag because I thrive off of dopamine, but it's more of an "x MC" fic, meaning that I wrote the MC's personality (whenever it shows up/becomes relevant to a prompt) in a way that aligns more with what choices you need to make to get Leander's red dialogue in the demo (along with assuming that MC held back when showing Leander their curse and that they chose the more sympathetic dialogue options when talking about the others with Leander), but no other traits of theirs (physical or otherwise) have been mentioned, other than the fact that Leander is actively manipulating them and they're falling for it.
Second-person POV. It just feels more correct/intimate for yandere fics, sue me.
Unfortunately I genuinely cannot tell if Leander is actually obsessed with MC or if he's just manipulating them or both, but for the purpose of this fic, I will be acting as if he's obsessed. I will also be making use of that crack theory I posted about on my main blog because the concept intrigues me. Also, props to that person who pointed out that Leander only used magic to "shield" himself from MC's curse the first time they touched him but not the second time, because that shows up here too (unless that got fixed in the new update, which I've been procrastinating on playing).
This is meant to be written as if time has passed since the events of the demo and MC is already on his route, so expect a lot of speculation here (especially since I joined the fandom too late to join the Kickstarter and I'm not financially stable enough to join the Patreon)
No beta we die like smiley guy
Trigger Warnings: Yandere-typical manipulation and gaslighting + toxic co-dependent relationships + obsessive and possessive behavior; Leander being a masochist in a very roundabout way; isolation (Leander intentionally tries to make MC develop Stockholm Syndrome. Does he know what that is? No, but that's his strategy.); Leander is kind of a perv (No non-con; vaguely dub-con at worst (Also this is ever so slightly more NSFW than Kuras's but it's not that explicit)); yandere-typical mentions of murder and stalking; a couple prompts mention MC's hypothetical death; religious themes (Leander's delusional in a way that would make any potential religious trauma that Unnamed MC would have so much worse); potential of MC committing suicide is briefly mentioned in one prompt. If I missed anything, please do not hesitate to let me know

Word Count: 3.6k, 4.1k counting the A/Ns
A: Allure (What do they love about you?)
He thinks it might've been your curse.
He's grown resistant to many dangerous magic over the years, and he was confident that you couldn't hurt him. When he let you see that brief glimpse of light flash over his hand in the alleyway, it was all just for showāthere was no real shielding spell there, he just wanted you at ease.
Because be was sure you couldn't hurt himāand you didn't.
You claimed that your curse changes and hurts anyone it touches, and Leander thought that to only be half-true. Yes, he felt that it changed him, but it certainly didn't hurt him, no. If anything, it might have just done the opposite.
He didn't notice much on the first night, and he didn't find it too strange that he dreamt about you during his few hours of sleepāyou had a pretty face and an interesting personality, so it wasn't out of the question. But even so, it surprised him when he simply couldn't stop thinking of you the next day, or the days after that.
The most reasonable explanation is that your curse did actually do something to him. Perhaps he should be upset that you cursed him, but he did literally ask for it. And besides, the only real difference between a curse and a blessing is perspective, is it not?
B: Buddies (Are they willing to share?)
Not really. He was peeved in the beginning, but as time went on, he found his patience wavering by the day. But of course, he couldn't just incriminate himself in front of you (or his Adders), so he just had to figure out how to make you isolate yourself from them all naturally.
He knows that Mhin saved your life, and of course you'd want to befriend someone if they did thatābut really, you're wasting your time. You heard them: they didn't save you, you just happened to be there. They don't really care about you, hell, they're not all that interested in friends at all. If anything, you're just bothering them, so why even waste your time?
Yes, Kuras really is one of the few good people living in Eridia, and his good deeds keep him very busyātrying to spend too much time with him could very well put someone else's life at risk, you know. And besides, living in this city means that no matter how good you are, you always have at least one skeleton trapped in the closet, and Leander knows very well that Kuras does act just a little suspicious, doesn't he?
Maybe Ais was honest with you when you met, but just how many of your questions did he actually answer? Was it really honesty, or did he just give you vague truths for some questions and dodge the others? Really, he can'tāand probably won'tāgive you any information of genuine use, so there's no reason to even try. That, and can you really put that much trust in a man who threatened to have you torn to shreds within the first few seconds of meeting himāwho can control so many of the mindless beasts that nearly killed you twice in the first two days of your arrival?
He understands your sympathy towards Vere. Really, anyone would feel bad for him after hearing the tragic story of him being chained, leashed, and enslaved by the Senobium. But really, it's safer for everyoneāsafer for youāthat he is. Vere hates most people he meets, and so far, you don't really seem to be an exceptionāLeander certainly knows that he isn't. He's sure that you're clever enough to keep your distance (you did manage to get here with hardly anything to your name, after all), but he's not sure how much he trusts Vere not to⦠spin a few tales for you just to place a wedge between the two of you. Vere's petty, he would absolutely do something like that just to get on his nerves.
And the rest of his Adders? Don't worry about them. They're all a bit rough around the edges, and many of them like to work just as hard as he does. They'll be nice (or polite, at the very least) to you, but he doubts any of them would have time to kindle any real friendship with you⦠unless you're one of them, anyway.
C: Care (Are they prone to hurting you? Do they care if they do?)
Not physically, no. But the way that he keeps you from getting too close to anyone else; the way he'll leave you all on your own for hours or days at a time because he got busy with his own work; the way he promises he might just have a good lead this time, only for it to get the two of you nowhereā¦
He's testing the limits of your patience each time, but he always comes back to you in the endābreaking you down and molding you back together like some fucked-up piece of Kintsugi pottery.
D: Delusion (How delusional are they?)
Extremely delusional, and it gets worse each day. He's not quite sure of what your curse blessing did to him, but he just can't get you out of his head.
There was something wrong with himāsomething within him that the Allmother had left incompleteāthat you set straight, and he just can't get enough of youāof your touchānow that he's had a taste.
E: Effective (How effective are they at kidnapping you? Is escape possible?)
He never kidnapped you, you just walked into his arms and never left.
What? Of course you could leave if you wanted! Of course you could just wander off into this dangerous city where whether the Soulless are a bigger threat than the residents is still debatable, with nothing to your name, and no leads on a cureā¦
Not the best idea, is it? Then clearly you should just stay putāright here, where you're... safe.
Ultimately, if Leander lets you "leave," it's just a faƧade. If he isn't keeping an eye on you, his Adders certainly are. And if he (or the Adders) do something to sabotage you and make your "independent" life just a tad more difficult until you come right back into his arms⦠well, what you don't know won't hurt youānot too badly, anyway.
But if you were especially insistent on leaving him? It's enough for him to drop the act; he's a talented mage with a half-decent rep and plenty of resources at his disposal, and he has no qualms against keeping you locked away in the room he oh-so generously provided for you. In this scenario, he might just keep you locked away for daysāfood and drink always seem to magically appear any time you wake up, even if you set traps around the door. The hunger and isolation and boredom will get to you eventually, and only then will he allow you back outside.
And when it does happen? You'll see that nobody even questions where you went. None of them even seem to care or have noticed your absence to begin with. Clearly, Leander is the only one who cares about you, so maybe pushing him away isn't the best ideaā¦
F: Fisticuffs (How tolerant are they about you fighting back? Do they take precautions?)
It depends on how willful you are. If he knows you're just being a little stubborn, then he'll humor it, since he knows it won't take too much effort to get you to stop. Otherwise, he puts a very quick stop to your antics.
He'll keep you as far from harm's way as he can manage, but if allowing some external force to bruise you up a bit in order to scare you back into his arms is necessary⦠well, he'll make sure you don't get too bruised up---it would be a bit rude to bother Kuras with something so minuscule, after all.
G: Gatherer (Do they steal your things? What do they take?)
A wide variety of things: clothes and random items you tend to wear/use frequently to make you inconvenienced (he buys you new versions of each item every time he does this); your money (not because he needs it, but just to make sure that you do); any sex toys you happen to own (why would you need them when he's right here?); items of sentimental value (so he could comfort you over losing them, and maybe play hero when he just happens to find them lying around somewhere)⦠really, he'll steal anything, as long as he's sure you'd notice is absence.
H: Hell (What's the worst possible thing to happen while under their care?)
When you get locked away for being too stubborn. He doesn't just keep you locked in your room, no, he also uses a few magic tricks---an enchantment on the window that keeps you from telling the time (along with something that breaks any clocks you might have in there), a charm that makes the rest of the Wick sound dead-silent with the only sound being that of his footsteps that occasionally walk up to your door for a few moments before leaving without him saying a wordā¦
Because just isolating you isn't enough---he needs to make it hurt.
I: Introvert (Do they ever allow you to leave?)
As in, leave the Wet Wick? Sure, every now and then, but never without some kind of supervision, and not for too long. More often than not, your ability to "leave" depends on if he has free time, since it's usually just him taking you out on a date.
J: Jealousy (How easily do they get jealous?)
Leander has a weird relationship with jealousy. On one hand, he's confident that nobody else would stand a chance with you. On the other, he doesn't want anyone to even try to take a chance with you to begin with. So, maybe he doesn't really get jealous too easily, but he does get possessive very easily.
K: Kill (Does killing come naturally to them? How often do they kill?)
Killing is something that has always left an impact on him, even if he knows whoever he killed deserved it. it's why he makes such a great effort to avoid it.
Although, there have been a couple incidents where he had to kill someone for your sake---someone who was trying to harm you, and someone who was getting too close.
Both times caught him off guard, because he found himself much more willing to do the dirty work than he usually was, and he felt much less guilty about it than usual.
After thinking about it for a while, it became less and less startling---of course he's do anything for you. Why would he even question that?
L: Lovey-Dovey (How suffocating are they? Do they ever give you space?)
Leander switches from never leaving you alone (sometimes literally, other times just making sure he's in the same room as you while doing his own thing) to leaving you alone for days at a time (sometimes as a petty response to being asked for a bit of space, but usually as a punishment---but also sometimes randomly, just to keep you appreciative of his company).
M: Masquerade (How do they act around others? Would anyone guess their intentions?)
Most of Lowtown's residents think too highly of him to believe he could be such a terrible person. Besides, it's unlikely that they've even really noticed you---you're new to Eridia, and you're rarely ever out and about, so nobody knows much about you other than that you're special to Leander. For all they know, you're just really introverted or just too busy to go wandering around.
Maybe his Adders might have noticed him acting a little different, but then again, none of them have ever really seen what he looks like when he's in love, so maybe that's what's up with him these days. In the end, they're too loyal and they look up to him too much to ask too many questions.
Mhin avoids the Wick as much as they can, and they're not even close to Leander to begin with, so of course they haven't noticed anything. That and, well, you're not exactly important to them, either. Maybe they caught a glance or two of you whenever they do end up having to visit the bar, but they haven't spoken to you since the night you two met. They have no clue that anything is happening whatsoever.
Kuras has noticed Leander acting a bit more off than usual, but he's found himself to be a bit busier than usual as well, so he doesn't get too much time to ponder the issue. He doesn't like that he doesn't see much of you these days, but he supposes that he can be happy about you keeping yourself safe.
Ais, being one of the Wick's regulars and someone who's at least somewhat close to Leander most certainly notices that something's up. Much to Leander's (well-hidden) annoyance, he's the most persistent when it comes to talking to you. He's grown a little less persistent over the past months, though---you're not exactly keen on talking to him whenever he tries these days. So, he keeps an eye out, but you two aren't exactly close, so he's not making too much of an effort.
Vere knows exactly what what Leander's doing. Unfortunately for you, he doesn't care about you all that much, and Leander seems to have been very effective in making you unwilling to socialize with him, so he probably isn't going to try and do anything. Sure, he could give you all the hard truths and unwanted warnings he'd like, but he doubts you'd listen to him. Maybe if you gave him a good reason, or just begged very nicely, he might help you---for no real reason other than to inconvenience the fucker, but he'd help. However, he doesn't see that happening anytime soon, so he's not going to waste his time.
N: Nobody Else (If you successfully escaped, would they move on?)
Nope. Whatever your "blessing" did to him was chronic and terminal.
You better have hoped that you timed this right---and that you're leaving the city altogether, since he'd never stop looking for you if you just stayed put. You don't want to know what the repercussions will be like if he catches you this time, so you better run, and you better be quick.
In the worst-case scenario where you can't leave the city⦠well, you know where the Seaspring is. That, and Vere was quite eager about devouring your soulā¦
O: Obsequious (Are you divine to them? Or is it the other way around?)
Yes. What you see as a monstrosity and its curse, he sees a fallen god and their blessing. From what you've told him, he's the only one you truly chose to bless, which means that you've chosen him and no-one else. Clearly, the reason it "hurt" all those other nobodies is because none of them were worthy.
Clearly he's the only one for you, so don't go searching for anyone else.
P: Partnership (Do you get any say in anything?)
Vaguely. You can place your input on any gifts he gets for you, and he'll adjust accordingly to your tastes while making sure there's something still relevant to him in the theme of the gift. You can ask him for a bit of space, and he'll leave you completely alone or ignore for a week. You could ask to leave the Wick, and he'll have someone watch over you, assuming he can't do so himself---he'll also make sure you return when he wants you to. You can tell him you're not in the mood for sex, and whether or not he respects it or tries to guilt you into it depends on a coin flip.
Generally for most things, he lets you get a word in while still maintaining dominance over the overall conversation---that is, unless you ask him if you can spend time with literally anyone else.
Q: Quaky (How honest are they with you?)
He's honest with you about his own feelings towards you, but that's about it. If he's not just outright lying to you, then he's dodging questions and stretching the truth as if his life depends on it.
R: Red Flags (What red flags did you miss?)
Quite frankly, I'm not sure if there wasn't a red-flag that you missed here. Although, to be fair, he was quite subtle about it.
All the little tricks he used to get you alone with him; all the times you needed help or a kind word or just company and he just so happened to be in the right place at the right time; the way that any attempt you made towards independence just happened to fail⦠he's been manipulating you from the start, but if you caught on, it was far too late.
S: Suavity (Are they likeable? Did you or others like them before?)
The charming and charismatic mage and leader of the Adderstone, who seems to have appeared out of nowhere to help the citizens of Lowtown when not even the city's heralded Senobium wouldn't do as much as lift a finger for them? Really, as far as most of Lowtown is concerned, it would be strange not to like him.
Really, it just depends on the crowd. Most people of Hightown (especially any Senobium affiliates) don't think very kindly of him, but the people of Lowtown love him---with the exception of rival gangs and the few who think he's annoying, at least.
T: Touch (What's sex with them like?)
No matter what, he's showing absolute subservience to you---it doesn't matter if you want him to be submissive or dominant, he's doing anything you ask of him.
U: Urgent (How long do they wait to pounce?)
He doesn't. He started manipulating you on the very first day you met and he never stopped.
V: Victory (What's the likelihood of you giving in?)
Very likely; almost guaranteed, even. Isolation will get to anyone eventually, especially in MC's case---why would they care about a cure when their One and Only is immune to their curse, anyway?
W: Weakness (How could you exploit them?)
Damage his reputation. It's not that he cares more about it than he does you, but in the end, he depends on it quite a bit in order to isolate you properly. I'd say it'd be an effective way to escape him, but you know what they say about cornered ratsā¦
X: Xanadu (What's your living situation like?)
At this point, it's less of a room in an inn and more of a particularly tiny apartment---that is, whenever you're not staying⦠wherever Leander lives.
(Maybe just a different room in the Wick, but as far as I know, there's nothing to really confirm or deny this.)
You get to decorate however you wish (mostly with the things he bought), but otherwise there's noting too notable. Whether or not you also depend on Leander for food depends on if the Wick has a kitchen somewhere.
Yikes⦠(What if you died? What if they killed you?)
First of all: Leander explicitly avoids causing any physical harm towards you, so if your blood is on his hands, it's just because his actions resulted in you killing yourself. Either way, the result is the same: He simply denies that it happened. He blacks out when he is given the terrible news, and then he spends all his resources checking every little nook and cranny of Eridia because surely you're just be particularly stubborn this time and you can't just hide away forever.
His Adders know the truth, but Leander seems to mentally be elsewhere anytime someone tries to break it to him, so they comply in the fruitless search out of hopes that knowing for certain that you're not hiding out anywhere in the city might just help him get out of the denial stage.
When the Adders get nowhere, he tries to hire Mhin to look for you. Mhin refuses at first, telling him over and over again that you're dead, but eventually Leander offers them a sum too high to be refused, so they finally relent. Of course, they don't actually bother to search; they just take the money and disappear for a bit before returning to tell Leander that they found nothing.
He does a few regular checks around the Seaspring, and then he gets in a fight with Ais when the demon tries to convince Leander that you are, in fact, dead.
He even goes to Vere, desperately asking if the Senobium might have taken you. Vere knows the truth, but he vaguely implies that the Senobium may have had something to do with your "disappearance" just to mess with him. Leander spends many resources just trying to get in to confirm or deny Vere's story, but he eventually learns that he was lied to.
Once it becomes clear that you're not hiding in the city? That's where it all goes downhill. See, not even that is enough for him to acknowledge that you're dead. Instead, he acknowledges that what you had really wasn't a blessing at all; all this time, and it really was a curse.
There's a little seed of rage, bloodlust, and insanity that rapidly begins to sprout in his mind as he realizes this. As far as his delusional mind is concerned, it was you who used and broke him, not the other way around.
And finally, he understands why this "gift" of yours makes people so desperate to kill youā¦
Z: Zeus (What's the one thing you should never, ever do?)
*Disappears for months and then suddenly reappears leaning across a 3.2k word (not counting the A/Ns) fic like a grand piano* Hey~

Kuras's character is the one that always gives me the most trouble (and I know jack-shit about medical stuff), so expect this to be inaccurate ahead of time.
This is meant to be written as if time has passed since the events of the demo and MC is already on his route, so expect a lot of speculation here (especially since I joined the fandom too late to join the Kickstarter and I'm not financially stable enough to join the Patreon)
No beta, we die like smiley guy
Trigger Warnings: Yandere-typical toxic co-dependency and possessiveness (which is treated as a desire to keep MC safe), medical malpractice (and not in the fun Dr. House way), religious themes (+ obsessiveness), mentioned killing/death (+ MC's death is spoken about in multiple prompts), mentioned suicide (for MC), MC is frequently drugged/poisoned without their knowledge or consent (it goes along with the malpractice), very vaguely inspired by Cirrus's route from Obscura (in the sense of him promising to keep MC safe while actively harming them at the same time (this also goes along with the malpractice)). If there's anything I forgot to add, please do not hesitate to let me know.

A: Allure (What do they love about you?)
In some strange way, you're very similar to him: devoting your life towards one seemingly impossible goal, and allowing not even death to get in the way of it---that is why you clung to life so tightly in the swamp, is it not?
Kuras had always loved humanity---it's why he was even here to begin with. But in truth, as the world had become more and more cruel towards humanity and as humanity turned more and more cruel in return just to keep up with it, he's started to feel that little part of himself begin to waneā¦
Perhaps it's because of that: you're a kind soul who simply refuses to allow yourself to be turned by the cruelty of this world---one last glimmering beacon of hope.
Kuras knows that he's already suffered greatly throughout the years for his repentance, and some part of him has to wonder if you might just be a sign that he's succeeded---or is very close to succeeding---in his own goalsā¦
B: Buddies (Are they willing to share?)
To an extent. He's not necessarily possessive of you as much as he wants you to stay safe, and he knows better than anyone how dangerous Eridia---and those living here---can be.
Mhin is one of the few people he doesn't worry about at all when it comes to this particular subject---he can sense a kind heart hidden beneath all that cruelty, and it's unlikely that they'd want to be too close with you to begin with, especially now since they know he's taken an interest in you, so it's a win-win for him. Although, he is aware that Mhin sees themself as a danger to most other people, and while he doesn't know the full extent as to why, he can't help but be just a tad bit cautious towards themā¦
He trusts Leander, and he does see him as a friend, but he can sense that there's something not quite right about him these days. He's fine with you two being friends, but he's wary of you two getting too close.
He likes Ais, sure, but he'd prefer it if you kept your distance from him. He knows how the man gets when he's in a mood, and he just isn't certain of just how much control Ais has over his pets. His curiosity towards Kuras's true nature and his closeness to Vere certainly doesn't help his case, either. But the most damning thing of all is the Seaspring---he knows how desperate you are for a cure, and he is at least somewhat knowledgeable about what happens when people drink from the cursed waters. He just doesn't want to risk losing you to the strange being hiding in the depths, as he's lost countless other patients to it over the years he's been in Eridia.
And then there's Vere. Kuras is quite sure that there's nobody in the world who is unfortunate enough to know Vere as well as he does---although Ais has been getting pretty close---and so there's nobody who knows better than him just how dangerous the fox-tailed bastard can be. Kuras will go through any length to make sure you stay away from the prick. Not because he's been flirting with you quite frequently as of late---he knows that he's just doing it to piss him off. Really, he has regretted sparing him for decades, but now with you in the mix, he can't help but wish for his death a bit more frequently than usualā¦
C: Care (Are they prone to hurting you? Do they care if they do?)
Yes, but his feelings towards his actions are a bit complicated.
See, as time passes and the two of you grow closer, his concern for your safety steadily increases. Eventually, he becomes reluctant to allow you to leave the clinic at all, especially after a little accident leaves you with some particularly dire injuries (read: a broken arm and a few scratches).
This last injury was a bit of a tipping point for him. Since you're so busy searching for a cure for your curse---an effort he was aiding you in, although without much luck on his half---there was no way for him to convince you to stay in the clinic long-term⦠that is, unless your health was at risk.
Slowly, he starts sabotaging his own care whenever you come to the clinic needing treatment---intentionally making sure that a wound or injury doesn't heal properly, adding some kind of poison to any medicines you need that just make you sicker, things like that. Of course he wouldn't put you or your health in any serious danger---his entire goal is to keep you safe, after all.
He does feel guilt for his actions, although he can't quite tell if he feels guilty for doing this to begin with, or because he doesn't feel guilty for it (although, if the latter is the case, does that not mean he feels guilt for the action itself?)
He's never thought of fleetingness as a reason for something or someone to become any less precious, but you're someone particularly precious to him, and he wants you to stick around for as long as possible. So, do stick around a while longer, will you? He promises it's for your own goodā¦
D: Delusion (How delusional are they?)
His mind has been a mix of logic and "optimism" (read: delusion) ever since the two of you have started getting close, and the passage of time has only served to make it worse.
One part of him---the more "optimistic" part---is convinced that you were sent to him as a reward of sorts; a sign that all his efforts to repent for his past failures has finally led to something, but there's just one last challenge in his path before he's fully earned his forgiveness. The more logical part of his brain knows that you're just another mortal who happened to cross his path---a particularly interesting one, sure, but ultimately just another soul amongst the many that exist in this world.
Another, smaller part of him which he's fond of ignoring seems to be convinced that you were sent not as a gift, but as a test. He can't quite tell if he ignores this part of his mind because it's illogical, or because he simply doesn't want to admit that he doesn't care whether or not he fails this test.
E: Effective (How effective are they at kidnapping you? Is escape possible?)
Technically he's not really kidnapping you, and its effectiveness is entirely circumstantial. The only thing stopping you from leaving is the state of your own health, after all. You could argue that you can rest and heal in the comfort of your own living space, but that will be met with increasingly stubborn arguments for staying in the clinic as you healed (if you're successful in convincing him to allow you to heal in your own space, expect him to visit frequently just to make sure⦠and to try and convince you to come back to the clinic when you clearly seem to be getting worse.).
He does consider trying to put you in a vegetative state, but he knows very well that most people don't usually come out of that alive (and he does enjoy actually talking to you), so he quickly dismisses the idea.
You could escape by simply refusing to go back after receiving "treatment," or by just leaving before you're finished healing. Now that would put him in a difficult positionā¦
F: Fisticuffs (How tolerant are they about you fighting back? Do they take precautions?)
Given the context, you'd essentially just be another difficult patient. And, since Kuras has dealt with many such cases throughout the years, he's figured out a large number of ways to deal with the stubborn ones. At most, you'd probably just end up annoying him.
(Of course, if you end up outright attacking him, he probably has plenty of ways to effectively subdue you and keep you subdued in the meantime.)
G: Gatherer (Do they steal your things? What do they take?)
He doesn't outright steal your things---the art of theft is never one he ever bothered to perfect throughout his time, and quite frankly, he's too busy to try it anyway. That being said, he did form a habit of collecting any trinkets you happen to leave behind during your visits.
If it's something unimportant that you wouldn't immediately notice if it went missing, he simply just keeps it. He tells himself that he's going to get it back to you eventually, but the matter just conveniently seems to slip his mind whenever you're around. If it's something important that you would immediately notice, then it mostly depends on the timing---at first, he just keeps an eye on it until you return, but later on, he might just try to hide it somewhere in order to keep you around a little bit longer while the two of you search for it.
H: Hell (What's the worst possible thing to happen while under their care?)
Maybe he accidentally takes it too far: a poison is too effective, and now you're suffering while on the brink of death as he does everything in his power to bring you back to a more stable condition. You're probably frightened, sure, but it's nowhere near the level of terror he's feeling---after all, he almost lost you. It would be all his faultā¦
Or maybe he wasn't careful enough in covering his tracks, and you managed to figure it out: the hurt and betrayal you would feel as he would try to convince you that it was all in your head. Maybe you're gullible (or just very desperate to not be alone), and you believe him---now every time you get sick, or an injury takes too long to heal, you have that doubt in your mind as you let him take care of you. Maybe you don't believe him, and you try to escape him---and you fail. He is very powerful, and a very talented doctor and alchemist, so he has a number of ways to keep you permanently subdued if you do try and leave him.
I: Introvert (Do they ever allow you to leave?)
In the beginning, yes: partially out of guilt, partially to keep up his faƧade, you are able to leave quite frequently---that is, until he starts causing you to suffer from more serious ailments which would require you to stick around for a while longer than usual.
Eventually, he starts working to get to the point where you can't actually leave---your condition is far too serious for him to allow you to.
J: Jealousy (How easily do they get jealous?)
He doesn't really get jealous easily. Generally, the two people he's seen flirting with you the most frequently have been Leander (who eventually backed off after it's been made clear that you're more interested in Kuras than him) and Vere (who, as stated before, is doing this less out of genuine interest and more so out of the desire to piss Kuras off). Of course, there have been other random people who've made a move, but they rarely every stick around to ruffle Kuras's feather too much.
All in all, he just gets a bit annoyed at the worst---very rarely has anyone given him a real reason to get jealous.
K: Kill (Does killing come naturally to them? How often do they kill?)
Maybe it has in the distant past, but not anymore---it's quite literally the opposite of his job, as a matter of fact. However, if another patient of his has proven themself to be a danger towards you⦠well, he supposes that if he were to replace their medicine with poison/intentionally mess up a surgery, they must have had it coming.
If the danger is coming from someone who isn't a patient of his (because they prefer a Hightown clinic, or because they prefer not to visit a clinic at all, or literally any other reason), then there's really nothing he can do about them. Although he absolutely does use this as yet another reason for you to stick close to him.
In a scenario where the threat to you happens to be Vere or the Senobium, well⦠he knows that using the fullest extent of his power could endanger the entirety of Eridia, but as long as he'd have a way to keep you out of harms reach? Well, it's about time someone had dealt with them, isn't it?
L: Lovey-Dovey (How suffocating are they? Do they ever give you space?)
In the rare cases that you're around and uninjured/healthy, then he's only as affectionate as any normal person would be with their partner; maybe too much some days, maybe not enough on other days, but always willing to adjust to your needs (he's had plenty of practice with being a good partner, after all).
But on the usual days of you being there as a patient, he is just a bit more suffocating as he tends to linger a bit longer than he needs to while also checking in on you more than you might feel is necessary.
M: Masquerade (How do they act around others? Would anyone guess their intentions?)
He acts pretty much exactly the same around everyone else: just the kind, occasionally miracle-working doctor who will lend his aid to anyone for free. Why would someone like that ever intentionally harm someone just because he became delusional and formed an obsession around that person?
As much as Mhin enjoys Kuras's company, they're usually pretty busy and they don't get to spend too much time around him---plus, as far as they're concerned, fewer clinic visits is usually a good thing in their line of work. As far as they're concerned, Kuras is acting very normally for a man in love. You, on the other hand? Yeah, as far as they're concerned, you're the idiot who decided to take a little stroll around Lowtown after sundown without any sort of weapon. Your strangely frequent visits to the clinic really doesn't seem that strange at all to them.
It's a little hard to tell if Leander really trusts Kuras that much, but he does think your frequent runs to the clinic are a bit odd, even if you two are exclusive. So unless he gets any real proof that something fishy is going on, he just ignores it---it would be rather tragic if the only free-clinic in the city had to be shut down, after all.
Ais always has that feeling in the back of his head that Kuras has been hiding something, and it's only gotten worse since you've gotten here. He's relatively certain that there's something up, but Kuras has been making it a bit difficult to investigate...
Vere almost certainly knows something weird is going on. Unfortunately for you, he hasn't really been given a good enough reason to play savior. Fortunately for you, he fucking hates this guy and would happily sabotage him just to be a menace. The problem with that, however, is that he'd probably just kill you to do so... although, the thought of Kuras's retaliation is enough to keep him from actually doing that.
N: Nobody Else (If you successfully escaped, would they move on?)
Assuming you left Eridia altogether? He's been stationed in Eridia for quite some time now, so maybe it's just about time to fake another death---he's gotten quite good at it since he's started masquerading as a human, after all. Yet another tragic death before he packs up and heads out into this broken world once again---this time, in search of one person instead of his greater goals. The issue is time; he might have all the time in the world, but he knows yours is tragically limited. The only thing for him to do now is pick a direction and hope it's the right one.
O: Obsequious (Are you divine to them? Or is it the other way around?)
In some convoluted way to the less-than-logical part of his mind, yes. You're not exactly like a god to him, no, but you might just be a gift or test from one.
P: Partnership (Do you get any say in anything?)
In the beginning, when the ailments he's been afflicting you with were minor and inconvenient at worst, sure; you could convince him to allow you to heal in your own space, as long as you allowed him to visit you whenever he was free. But as time passed, and the ailments you've been suffering from became more and more sever, he becomes increasingly insistent that you stay wherever he can reach you.
Q: Quaky (How honest are they with you?
Only slightly. He's been dodging your questions and stretching the truth since the day he met you, although he rarely ever tells outright lies.
R: Red Flags (What red flags did you miss?)
Every single one of them. The doctor who somehow managed to save you from the brink of death---who sewed your arm back together without leaving any hint that it had been sliced off of you in the first place, aside from the stitches---suddenly can't treat your illnesses or treat your injuries in a way that keep them from becoming a hindrance? Sure, nobody's perfect, but it's certainly just a little (read: very) suspicious, isn't it?
S: Suavity (Are they likeable? Did you or others like them before?)
Of course---there's very few people in Lowtown who don't like him, and for obvious reason.
T: Touch (What's sex with them like?)
Assuming that you're not in a fully healthy state: he's very careful with you, and he's placing much greater emphasis on your pleasure than his own. He's very hesitant overall just because he doesn't want to worsen your condition in a way that he can't fully control.
U: Urgent (How long do they wait to pounce?)
He doesn't start sabotaging himself until several months in when you end up with that "particularly dire" injury, and he doesn't start becoming a serious threat to your health until several more months after that.
V: Victory (What's the likelihood of you giving in?)
Assuming that you're not very stubborn (or very observant)? Very likely. He's just trying to help, after all. Why wouldn't you let him help you?
W: Weakness (How could you exploit them?)
His entire goal is to keep you safe. So, if you were to sabotage your own health in a way that makes the situation just a little more dire than he intended, then he might just back off a little---or he might make it even worse specifically to make sure there's no way you could leave his supervision. It's a bit of a coin toss, really.
X: Xanadu (What's your living situation like?)
Comfortable, but not quite homey. I imagine that Kuras would have a private room in the clinic, even if he doesn't sleep, so he keeps you there instead of wherever he might keep the long-term patients. It's clean and organized with few personal mementos, but he'd happily add whatever little trinkets of yours he's collected (or just anything small that you might've wanted from your living space (which was either collected by him or by Mhin)) over the months of you being together if it meant making the space more appealing to you.
Y: Yikes⦠(What if you died? What if they killed you?)
At first: denial. He keeps your body in the clinic much longer than necessary; long enough for patients to notice and complain about the smell, despite his efforts to cover it.
Then, it goes one of two ways: anger, or bargaining.
If it's anger, then it eventually ends with Eridia and everyone living there being destroyed in his fury. If his reason for existing is gone, then why should anything else get to live?
If it's bargaining⦠well, he's a being of immeasurable power, and in the end, the only real difference between healing and necromancy is the timing. And he is a very talented healer---if he can bring someone from the brink of death when there's no possible way he should've been able to save them at all, then why can't he simply bring someone back from death itself? He still has your body, and he has all the time in the world, so surely, he'll have you back and breathing and alive in his arms eventuallyā¦
Z: Zeus (What's the one thing you should never, ever do?)
Kill yoursel. Or, at least, don't get caught attempting to do so.
If you're unsuccessful, then you can count on him becoming much, much more suffocating than he usually is, as well as removing anything that could, reasonably or not, be used to bring harm to yourself. If you felt you were being monitored at all times before, the problem has just gotten so much worse now.
Good news is that things have gotten somewhat better, but I'm still on a semi-hiatus for now. I've managed to get some motivation to work on lore for my OCs, but I'm not quite in the mindspace needed to work on actual fanfics just yet.
On the topic of fanfics, I've been re-reading my fics from my Vere reincarnation AU series to see if that could motivate me some. While re-reading them, I realized that they were kinda rushed and definitely not my best work (I haven't gotten out of that "speed over quality" mindset that I formed in high school yet, if that makes any sense).
Because of this, I want to try and re-write them to see if that might help with my writer's block. But I also know that there were a few people who already really like what I have, and I know I've been taking a long time to get the next parts finished, and I don't want to keep them waiting even longer (especially since, currently, my WiFi access is still very inconsistent).
So, what should I do?
Go ahead and re-write them
Don't re-write them
Finish the current version first and re-write them after
Put these options in a randomizer wheel and let that decide
hey so uh. life happened. my cat died, and my already inconsistent wifi access just became even more inconsistent. so I'm probably gonna go on a short hiatus on this specific blog. sorry about that.
(I was still looking forward to participating in the orchid festival stuff but, unfortunately, circumstances. I'll try to ask if it's okay if I post them late, or I'll just rework what I already have to fit in an unrelated setting)
procrastinated too close to the sun. the mermay fic for Vere either won't be posted until sometime in June or it won't get posted till next year. sorry about that.
