The Power of Face-to-Face Communication in a Digital World

Face-to-face communication allows group members to come up with more ideas and become more capable as a group, compared to virtual meetings.

I chose this article because, while true, it operates on the idea that we no longer talk face to face. I’ve found a trend in our generation that makes this seem just a little untrue. What I’ve found is that I, and many other my age, usually use social media technology to plan meeting face to face. Instead of calling my friend, I’ll text her to see if I can come over her house. I think a lot of social media revolves around the eventual meeting face to face.

Online dark humor is the new  group coping mechanism for depression and the state of the world. On the me_irl subreddit, people come together to share images of thins the find humors, often having to do with problems in the world. This is one the upsides to new media technology. People are bonding with complete staggers over their own personal problems. We can connect with people from all over the world, just to make a joke or two.

Texting has become part of our communication, even when we’re not texting. Both real and fake screen caps of text messages are shared for several reason. The one above is made to be humorous, which is a common tend. Along with this, many of these posts are simply made to be relatable. This has become a trending image on social medias platforms. People will even text images of texts to their friends, a weird circle of communication

I found this quote looking through the communication tab. This interests me because this is how people really feel. I believe both sides of this quote. This isn’t always the bare minimum case, but I do think face to face conversation happens less than it should. It’s more a matter of finding the right balance.

Chicago torture: Facebook Live video leads to 4 arrests

A woman who broadcast the beating of a man on Facebook Live was arrested along with three others in connection with the attack, Chicago Police said.

Social media isn’t all good. Many of us know this story, but this isn’t the only case. Facebooks livestream feature allows us communicate to a large audience at one time. This is great for connecting with friends and family, but this tool can be used for harm too. The above example is just one of the many misuses documented. Another recent story is about a girl killing herself on camera using Facebook livestream feature.

Our social media presence matters a lot now-a-days. While this article shows proof that social media can help teen get into college,Social media can also hurt peoples chances at a job, or their standing with a job. We’ve all heard someone getting fired from their job because of something they posted on Facebook. In a different class, we studied an event where two employee were fired for sneezing on food that was sold to customers. How were it found out? They posted the video on Youtube. You are accountable for what you post online, a new, and sometimes crucial thing to out communication.

This article presents the idea that we share a connection with each other when we share the same news.  This presents a question, can we stay unified over the news when we’re all reading different things. I think that the new climate both helps and hinder that bond. Because we are able to discuss the new we read, we can talk about the news we read. This mean we can talk about our agreements, but also our disagreements.

I found the numbers listed on this pretty interesting. When clicking the link to view a bigger version of this info graphic I found a statistic that’s pretty interesting. 80% of videos viewed on Facebook are viewed with the sound off. I think this is a testament to the way people communicate on Facebook. Likely this reflects on how quick our online communication can be. We want information fast, so it’s likely these videos don’t get finished either.

I found this link on one of the blogs following me, and though this was interesting in the context of ho technology has changed the way we communicate. Much of this is based around the idea that the most important social media to use is what you have the biggest audience on. What this implies is that, on the internet there is a more common trend of talking at people than talking to people. This something we wouldn’t have seen before the rise of social media.

Technology destroys interpersonal communication

I was taken aback by a recent Facebook status, not because it was shocking, but because it occurred to me how reliant we have become on technology.

An article last week made me think of this topic, and I just now had time to look up an article on it. This article covers the most stated argument against technology, that it’s causing the younger generation to not know how to communicate face to face. I’ve personally never seen any one on campus who I thought didn’t know how to communicate with other people. As someone who is socially awkward, these comments make me worry that many people are being misread. I have a hard time talking to people, but I can assure you I’m no better at it face to face than I am with technology. Sometimes I worry people think I’ve been ruined by technology, when I’m really just bad at talking.

I’ve seen several posts like these on the communication tag, and it brings out a new side the debate that hasn’t been covered on my blog. Technology in communications can help improve peoples lives. Like this person points out, there’s are tools to help disabled children communicate. These kinds of advancements can help all kinds of people. This is one of the perks to technology in communication.

this comic adds a little humor to the technology communication debate. Often, people treat texting likes it’s pulled us away from face to face communication. But before texting, it was phone calls. From experience, talking on the phone was pretty common, and was a good way of communicating with those who people couldn’t get into with someone face to face. It doesn’t seem like phone calls got as much flack as texting has.

This article brings about an idea I hadn’t thought about. With a lot of social media, we don’t talk to each other, we talk at each other. Most of what takes place on social media involves people talk at the world. Twitter and Facebook particularly are based around grabbing attention, not starting a conversation. Still social media does allows us to cast our thoughts out to people we would never be able to reach, something I think this article misses.

This article show the opposite opinion of the last, in this, technology is bad. What I think is the downfall of this article it’s all based on one big assumption: We don’t talk on the phone anymore. Now personally, I don’t talk on the phone unless it’s really important, and this is probably common among my age group, it’s not everyone. From personally experience, It’s pretty common to see people talking in the phone, and sometimes it’s a bit annoying, especially those people who can’t talk on the phone and drive.

Texting as a “miraculous thing”: 6 ways our generation is redefining communication

Was it a suicide? A homicide? Or an accident? Read and decide….

This article presents several points on why texting has improved with communications. Points 2 and 3 stood out as strong an interesting examples to me. With gifs, we are able to express ourselves in ways we never could when simply talking on the phone. Visuals are an important part of communication, and these have added this to our online communications. As a student, and writer, I’m always using the notes feature on my phone. Sometimes I use it to draft emails, so  I see where texting has had a effect on that ability.
