the first Western woman in modern times (post ancient times). keep in mind I said lead not fight alongside with and she did this as a woman not a as a woman disguised as a a la joan of arc. I believe it was the 2nd colored infantry of North Carolina in 1863. My source is Learning to Breathe Free. Which is an amazing book and it actually has footnotes that can cite primary sources which I would love to provide but the book is at home and I am not but feel free to ask later

Cast in occupational roles alongside men in most phases of the plantation operations, slave women participated in common forms of resistance to slavery. Though they were oppressed by black men, slavery was the common enemy. Both women and men workers of the field gangs were likely to participate in the plotting and execution of all forms of resistance whatever the gender of leadership. Both groups also worked in the masters’ household as domestics and engaged in poisoning as a means of resistance. However, some gender-specific aspects of plantation labor provided women with unique ways to resist slavery. Only women were nursemaids and midwives, and accusations of infanticide were directly solely at them. Gender made it possible for women to restrict fertility and control reproduction through abortions and other means, although it is improbable that such actions always constituted resistance.

Daily Tarot August 13, 2016 (Saturday)

Today’s card is The Queen of Swords. Before I pulled the card, I saw an image of rain falling on a rose. Spirit told me that the rain is important, otherwise the rose wouldn’t grow. Sometimes we all go through a “rainy” season in our life, but it’s through the rain that we really find out who we are. Life is filled with moments of joy and moments of disappointments, but its all about how we deal with the disappointments that really build our charater. We really do learn a lot and grow through our disappointments. You are wonderful like the rose, and know that you shall come out even stronger after the rain. You have a wonderful story to tell. I feel like a lot of good can come out of a struggle, I feel like it makes us more understanding and teaches us compassion.  The Queen of Swords is all about communication. So, perhaps sharing with others about a struggle you overcome could help them. Let’s all be encouraging and of help through our words. The chakra focus is the heart chakra. I feel like it would be a good day to really open our hearts, let’s not let the rain make us bitter.  Sometimes, The Queen of Swords can indicate someone who has been through a lot, and now their heart is guarded. Know that it is ok to open your heart again. Let’s really allow ourselves to trust again, and to open our hearts. much love and many blessings to you all:)

Reflection

The last 3 months I’ve taken on the challenge of learning about myself and the spiritual world at a deeper and more intimate level.  During this time my spiritual awareness has been opened to levels that I’d thought I wouldn’t reach until I was older.  Creating a blog like this was always something that I had thought about but I kept putting it off until “later”. You know “later” the place where procrastination and self- reigns and marvelous ideas go to die.

Some of my previous apprehension was from fear. For instance I didn’t think that I was ready for tarot cards. I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to handle them. However, after I got them using them came naturally for me. I had the same experience with making my personal alter.

The last aspect of the experience that I truly enjoyed was the unexpected connections that I made with other. First, I found unexpected support from the sheer number of women of color and specifically black women that were into holistic living. Spirituality does transcend race, gender and sexuality. However, it’s something about the shared experience that adds the extra impact that I needed.

I was also able to connect with people that I already knew on a deeper level. This process allowed me to be vulnerable enough to share my spiritual journey. In turn I learned that many people around hold the same universal world view that I do.

Overall, I feel blessed to have been able to go through this process - especially in an academic setting.  I have unyielding gratitude for being supported in the experience by my professor, my family, and friends. Most importantly I am proud of myself for being brave enough to take a path less traveled.

Yoni Eggs

After reading Naomi Wolf’s Vagina I found myself interested in rituals focused on the vagina. I’ve faintly heard about a few of them. From one woman made that claim that those with vaginas should try and let the vagina more sun to a video promoting the use of vaginal weights. The most prominent that I’ve found is the use of yoni eggs.

Yoni eggs are gems in the shape of eggs that can be inserted in the vagina. The purpose of the yoni egg is to strengthen the vagina – similar to kegel exercises. Using yoni eggs can allow for increased bladder strength and even sexual pleasure. The added benefit comes from the use of gems. The gems themselves have added healing properties. For instance black obsidian is used for protection, grounding and cleansing. A yoni egg made from black obsidian could be used to cleanse the vagina of negative energy.  Yoni eggs come in a variety of different gems and gem sizes.

The Goddess Theory

In my previous post I discuss Naomi Wolf’s book Vagina. A main concept that I found particularly interesting was Wolf’s Goddess Theory. The theory centers on the idea of harnessing energy and power from the vagina and specifically sexuality.  When I first read Wolf’s Goddess theory I was honestly confused. I didn’t understand how the two concepts connected. I had to set on the theory for few days to truly to be able to conceptualize it.

The Goddess Theory re-arrived in my consciousness one morning when I was getting dressed for class. I had gotten up a little bit earlier than usual and thought “I should get cute today.”  The process of “getting cute” isn’t just putting eyeliner on for me. I put on my playlist specifically titled “Baelist”- these were a grouping of songs by my favorite male artists that focused on their love of women. First got in the shower and took a particularly long time bathing myself. This morning I was sure to use my almond and honey body scrub to make my body extra smooth. I took time on myself – I doted on myself.  Once I got out of the shower I stayed unclothed longer than usually would. Instead of putting on lotion and rubbed my body in cocoa butter oil knowing that it would leave my skin glistening and glowing. After I oiled up I looked at myself in the mirror. I appreciated every curve, stretch mark, and roll. Mentally, I told myself “damn I look good”.  Finally I got dressed and put on a bit of makeup and started my day.

I’ve done this before – usually when I am going out for the night or if I was going to have my friend with benefits over.  What made this process in particular special was a feeling of power. The energy generated is usually sexual in nature however not sexual in the classical sense – sexuality for the purpose of having sex. It’s hard to exactly describe what the feeling is.  Later that night it finally clicked that feeling of sexual power was what Wolf was discussing. Sexuality performed without the preoccupation of it being consumed by someone else.

Naomi Wolf’s - Vagina

Naomi Wolf’s Vagina is a holistic look at the importance of the vagina in a women’s life. The main theme that I pulled from this book is the actualization that the vagina is interconnected with the rest the body. The vagina is frequently detached and commodified in popular culture from woman. The vagina is seen as a sexual object, a birthing mechanism or a dirty temptation that women use to seduce men.  Wolf discussed the return of women having agency over their vaginas. This vaginal memoir was inspired by Wolf’s own medical issues with her vagina. While I won’t spoil the book for any future readers I will say it’s interesting how literal in her realization of the interconnection between the vagina and the rest of the body is.

The book isn’t perfect.  Wolf’s view at times comes off as one sided and the writing can be a bit persuasive rather than informational. However, the overall message of the book is a powerful and simple one – vaginas are important. This book is essential for any vagina having person.  It’s an affirmational book that will make you proud to have a vagina!

Vagina was a needed reminder for me to include vaginal work into my spiritual and health endeavors.  There are a few vaginal based ritual and practices that I had been meaning to try but were pushed to the backburner.  I’m extremely curious to see how including my vagina into my practices change my body as a whole and my perspective.
