she’s so. she’s so terribly cruel. so terribly empty. so pitiable and yet she rejects pity. she’s misa amane and these are her choices, and she doesn’t regret any of them. she searches for total annihilation of the self and doesn’t find it, because just like light yagami, her desire to live is vicious and crippling.

something that’s inextricable from her character, I think, is that she’s an idol. explicitly in the text: misa is a performer, an entertainer. an actress and an image and a thing to desire. an inherently dehumanizing position that draws adoration, envy, lust. a career she doesn’t really seem to care for; a career she sacrifices in some adaptations, pushes to its limits in others. misa amane is beautiful and charming and you can’t help but love her a little bit. and underneath it all she is the fucking worst. but you feel bad for her. but everyone feels bad for her.

something about how the text interfaces with the metanarrative. something about how misa is the perfectly unreliable narrator. something about how she’s so difficult to think about and conceptualize as a character (like L and Light, though for supremely different reasons), like she’s on a stage and winking at you and daring you to guess at who she is underneath the miniskirts and glitz. she’s misamisa. these are her choices, and she doesn’t regret any of them.

Death Note is only good by accident. Death Note is brilliantly written. It's a comedy. It's a drama. It's a psychological thriller. It's just a fucked-up story a crazy guy wrote. It challenges us to think about criminality and morality. Everything it had to say about criminality and morality is absolute dogshit. It's incredibly entertaining. It's a modern classic.
