"Room 93", the debut EP from singer-songwriter Halsey, was released October 27th via Astralwerks/Capitol Records. The five songs that comprise this EP range from mellow, piano driven ballads (the stripped version of "Trouble") to the more up-tempo, synth driven tracks ("Ghost", "Empty Gold"). A common thread amongst the tracks is the honest, sometimes dark lyrical themes. One of the standout tracks, "Is There Somewhere" is a synth-driven song about reluctantly being sexually involved with someone who is romantically involved with someone else. The EP's single (another standout) "Ghost" is another synth-driven track about emotional longing. This track really showcases Halsey's power as a lyricist with lines such as "My ghost, where'd you go? What happened to the soul that you used to be?" Overall, the EP is a fantastic first effort and really showcases the powerful lyricism and outstanding production that is sure to propel Halsey to great heights in her career.
Indie-pop foursome, flor, is taking no prisoners with their single "Heart". From the opening line, the California-based group's credo is quite clear: art for art's sake without sacrifice. These upfront and honest lyrics, along with the band's sun bleached synth lines and hard hitting drum riffs make it the perfect song to both celebrate past triumphs and remain inspired for future ventures. If you're a fan of Halsey, Echosmith, and Young Rising Sons, make sure to check out flor.
