Tyler Thrasher personal collection. Every now and then I pull a piece out that’s too captivating (and precarious) to ship. I usually hold on to these for my personal enjoyment and study. My absolute favorite part of using these compounds and minerals as an artistic medium isn’t simply yielding crystals on dead shit (although it is truly dead shit with crystals), but it’s all of the smaller and unanticipated reactions/ formations that occur. The large crystals you see are the expected and anticipated results. However, upon drying out, a thin layer of micro crystals coated this ghost cicada, leaving it with a orange/ yellow natural crustiness. However, my absolute favorite part are the tiny “cauliflower” shaped formations that blossomed off of the cicada near the bottom! Ever since I started incorporating this into my daily artistic practice and reading about Chris Pratt’s admiration for insects, I always had this minor goal to get one of my crystallized insects into his collection after a handful of people introduced the idea to me. I don’t know how this will reach him, but I have a proposition, and it’s full of shenanigans. I’ve decided to step up the stakes. If by some miracle I can get one of my pieces in his collection, I will crystallize my hands in a molten crystalline solution and video it for everyone to see (it will be done safely and in the name of science of course.) So here’s to hoping I didn’t screw myself over and to hoping I get a kick ass video out of this.
