I enjoy a bit of hunting and sport shooting, but I've never quite understood the point. It seems the biggest argument for acquiring them is to have access to "weapons of war" equivalent to that of modern militaries in order for the civilians to defend themselves if needed. Alright, then what's the point of our armed forces?
The second amendment was written as an alternative to maintaining standing armies, but if we don't give a shit about that part then why do we want to arm civilians? To be clear I'm making a clear distinction between full-auto or large magazine ARs and shotguns/handguns/bolt-action rifles for personal defense and hunting.
Further, if we are going to allow largely-unregulated markets for military weapons why do we not enact some policy requiring eduction and proficiency training? If you're not knowledgeable and you can't hit what you want to then you don't deserve a gun of any type.
