Issue 1

Elyon and the Betrayal

The oracle doesn’t even bother to tell the w.i.t.c.h. girls that Elyon is going to betray them. He’s just like, “Nah, it’s fine. Shits about to hit the fan- should be fun to watch. Pull up a chair and get some popcorn while you’re at it…”

Literally the saddest thing is that her friends dare her to go talk to Cedric, and that they unintentionally send Elyon to her doom. And Elyon… my baby… please don’t talk to the creepy strangers who say they know “a lot about you.” Seriously the first few issues give me the shudders with Elyon and Cedric. And even though we could say Cedric is just following Phobos’ orders… based on his creepy as smile and how intent he looks, I’m going to argue he’s enjoying himself. At least in the beginning. Before he has to start playing babysitter and therapist.

This is why it’s so creepy; Elyon and her friends all consider this a DATE. They consider Cedric a real romantic interest. And Cedric is, once more, at least old enough to own and run a bookshop as a full functioning adult in society. And this is why I’m convinced the writers wrote Elyon and Cedric as a metaphor for a predator luring in a minor. They make it very clear Elyon is romantically interested in Cedric and that Cedric uses and manipulates her feelings to twist her into something she’s not… until she’s so broken and angry that she doesn’t even recognize herself. And it just… god it hurts my heart.

We know that not much time has passed, and already Cedric has convinced Elyon to lay out a trap to lure in her friends. We don’t know what he’s told her, although I’m sure it was some bullshit about how her friends want to kill her. But this is why I will say part of Elyon always had the capacity for evil; it’s too soon for Cedric to have completely put his claws in her, but she’s willing to lure them to the gym anyways. On a whim. Because a handsome stranger said so. That said, I do NOT think everything is Elyon’s fault. I really do think that Cedric and Phobos take advantage of her romantic feelings, her isolation, and her pain… and also her capacity for darkness. They take all of these things and use them to shape her into something they can use. But she still had that capacity for evil inside of her. And I think THAT’S what’s going to be so hard for her to overcome later.

The last two panels are literally the most iconic panels for me in the first issue. Elyon’s half in shadow (halfway gone already), and she’s watching the fire that could have killed her friends. And she doesn’t even blink. Or look that concerned. And it’s absolutely chilling. Because in that moment, I can see how she’s Phobos’ sister… and at the same time, this lost little girl who just got into a world of trouble with two adult, male abusers.
