Nixon kept his lips pressed firmly together, taking in everything she had to say without interruption. She deserved to be heard, and in all honesty he had no desire to try and defend himself when he knew he was guilty of just about everything she’d said. “I know.” He exhaled a shaky sigh, unsure if he could manage to pull the words he wanted together now that the opportunity was right in front of him. “I know I’m selfish. And I know you don’t want what I want. I know that acting jealous at a party wasn’t fair, and I know you’re not happy with it or me. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry for turning out to be a shitty person after all and for not admitting I loved you before that night. I thought about it. I just wanted to wait for you to meet me halfway on that one, and the only time we ever came close before then ended with you telling me you didn’t want to see me anymore. I didn’t mean to make you feel bad for trying to move on. I just wanted to put it out there that I didn’t want you to. I- the way things ended between us left so many unresolved feelings there that sometimes I feel like I’m stuck.” He raised one shoulder in half a shrug, knowing words were nothing compared to how confused he felt about the entire situation. How could he explain wanting to hold on when he knew he should let go?
“I didn’t want to see other people while we were together. I wanted to hook up with someone, which doesn’t sound much better but sex has never been something that really connects me to people. Don’t get me wrong, it can mean something but I wasn’t even thinking about trying to date someone. It was just- this is the longest relationship I’ve ever been in. It was only a matter of time before I did something stupid and self sabotaging to ruin things. I was scared that eventually I would crack when it came to being tempted and that if that happened you would really be gone so it was better to ask flat out to avoid the problem ever coming up. It sounds like bullshit but it’s the truth. I wasn’t spending every minute I was with you thinking about how much I wanted to be with someone else. I loved you. I meant everything I’ve ever said to you. That’s why I came here. I don’t want you to doubt or question every conversation we’ve ever had because I’m stupid and scared and selfish, because I’ve never lied to you. Especially not about shit like feelings. Everything was genuine.”
“Nixon,” Aggie didn’t know what to tell him, was he really saying that he was close to telling her that he loved her at the same time that he asked her to open their relationship? She didn’t know how to take this at all; it was like she was talking to a completely different man than the one that she’d been dating for more than a year. She suddenly wondered if she’d just had rose colored glasses on when it came to him, that she was blind to what he really wanted until he had to literally throw it in her face for her to catch up on it. She heard him out and she understood it, she understood because she knew that was who he was, but she was not going to ever sacrifice her happiness for him. She was not going to agree to something that made her feel sick to her stomach just to appease him and for a moment that was all she needed. She’d never needed Nixon, she loved him, she adored him and everything that he was and the way that he’d treated her, but she was Aggie Stewart as much as he was Nixon Peters, they wouldn’t change for each other, that much was clear.
She looked away as he finished and touched the corner of her eyes, making sure there were no signs of how upset she really was. He still failed to see how wrong it was to ask her to see other people. He still wanted it, so she really didn’t understand what he wanted from her now. “Look, I don’t want to hurt you. I love you. And I swear, I have never wanted to hate someone as much as I do right now. But I can’t hate you and I probably never will, but I need you to hear what I am about to say right now, no matter how much it hurts.” She finally looked back at him, adjusting her purse over her shoulder. “I had no insecurities about our relationship until the day that we broke up, you know? I knew you loved me even if neither of us ever said it out loud. I don’t think you understand what you did to us that day, Nixon. You went up to me, your girlfriend at the time, and told me that you wanted to fuck someone else. Out of nowhere. Even if you weren’t thinking about that someone else all the time that we were together, they were on your mind, Nixon. You wanted someone else, someone that wasn’t me, do you not understand how much of a shitty feeling that is?” She shook her head. “Not only that, but every single thing that you just said...they’re excuses, okay? You decided to tell me that you wanted to hook up with someone else and you knew damn well that I wouldn’t accept it so you made me break up with you. It’s...You got scared and you ran. And now you’re back on my doorstep, wanting to talk and telling me you miss me because what? You fucked the person that you wanted to fuck and got them out of your system? I don’t think you know what genuine feelings are, Nixon. You don’t understand them at all. Genuine feelings are not supposed to ever make you feel like this. I don’t know what you want from me right now...I don’t understand anything right now.”
