This is making me really sad
Holy shit I didn’t realize there were that few tigers
PROTECT BIG CATS AT ALL COST
I remember seeing a documentary some time ago about declining tiger populations. Although I can’t remember the name of it (or the network), I did find this link which includes lack of prey animals, shrinking habitats, and extremely compromised genetic diversity among the major causes.
How can people still think that poaching is worth it?! People are ignorant pricks.
No!

Advice ♥
When I started at my internship, I didn't really get advice. I wish that they had given me advice on how to deal with scared animals earlier on, not in the moment. To a rising senior, I would definitely advise them to take this internship if they love animals. I would also advise them to pay special attention to the things that others at internship do, so that way you know what you can do when you're bored.
i got a new kitty. his name is gizmo and he is a firecracker.
Journal! ^-^
Working with animals is definitely a career I am interested in pursuing. I am seriously considering opening up a shelter in the future, but I also want to be a veterinarian. I have also thought about doing therapy involving animals. Regardless of what I end up picking as a career, it will most definitely involve animals!
To make this happen, I am attending SUNY Cobleskill (Go Tigers!) which has an animal science major. Currently, I am conversing with the dean of the Agriculture school at Cobleskill, in order to adjust my schedule so that I will be on track for pre-vet within the B.S. in Animal Science major!
I think this internship has definitely confirmed my desire to work with animals in the future, but it has not solidified what profession I want to go into with animals, since there are just so many that I still haven't explored!
If you love animals and generally care about their well-being, then this internship is DEFINITELY for you!

So I am often told to go spend time with dogs whom only "yellow" dog walkers can spend time with and so the most fulfilling part of that is not only being able to make them happy, but also showing them to potential adopters and watching them be happy as well (and then adopt them!).
Since I want to work with animals, I pay special attention to how the Vet Tech Paula administers medications to the sick animals/ animals with special conditions (we have a cat with no knees! He's the cutest!). I have also learned how to approach scared animals/angry animals without getting mauled to death (only one bad incident!). I will definitely remember these things in the future.
I hope to carry on being able to have good communication skills within the work place, being a reliable worker and team player. I also hope to continue being able to handle big animals (not only dogs!) and keeping myself organized and on task.

Reflection Numero 7
I have learned a lot about Animal Haven. For one,it is a no nonsense agency. It does not support any way shape or form of animal abuse: including things some people don't see as abusive, such as prong or chain dog collars. I have also learned that AH will do anything in it's power to give the dogs comfortable homes until they are adopted. The people within this agency are extremely dedicated to the animals and that is so uplifting.
I have learned that I am also dedicated to the animals and doing anything in my power to help them. I have learned that I am "modest" and helpful, and a truly caring individual. As a professional, I have learned how to deal with difficult customers or animals who are misbehaving. As a student, I have learned how to be attentive and in tune with how the animals are in order to learn more about them individually.
Honestly I wouldn't change anything. Interning at AH is giving me a first hand experience at something that I want to create when I am older and I love every minute of it.
Of course playing with the animals, especially the puppies, is really enjoyable. However, so is the look on someone's face when they know they have found the dog or cat for them
I would ask more questions! (Which I am going to!)
Internship Journal Entry #...
At my worksite, I have only encountered a few problems. One of those problems has to do with the dogs. Specifically, the big ones! Not only is it hard to put a harness on them, it is also somewhat intimidating taking a giant black Labrador, for example, on a walk. However, I managed to overcome this challenge by working more with the bigger dogs to try and become comfortable with them as well as spending time practicing putting the dog's harness on.
Mary, the kennel attendant, was always very supportive and helpful of me during that time. She would give me pointers and show me how to do things if I got confused. She also showed me some tricks in order to get the dogs to like me more. I have learned that big dogs are really not that intimidating. In fact, they can be a lot calmer and funner to work with compared to little dogs.
Journal Entry 5 (I think? hah)
So I believe I am really good at taking directions. It's probably because I like to get things done as quickly and efficiently as possible so that I don't forget. I also don't want to look lazy or like an incompetent intern. When my supervisor is around, I do get nervous because I am worried that I will make a careless or stupid error that will have me relinquished from my internship. For the majority of the time at my internship I do believe I can articulate my thoughts quite well, although there are times when I feel like I don't possess the necessary vocabulary to professionally and efficiently communicate with the people I work with.
At internship I do think my input is valuable. That's because I'm one of the people who works closely with the dogs and so if I notice someone's behavior is a bit off or anything like that, my supervisors will listen to what I have to say because it is important. My supervisors also really like to hear other's opinions on certain things and appreciate it when I give my input. At Animal Haven, I do truly believe my work is worthwhile because I am helping to keep wonderful animals happy, clean, and healthy as well as preventing them from being euthanized. My work feels even more worthwhile when the animals that I work closely with are adopted.
At Internship... (Journal Entry #4ish)
When I first get to internship, I help clean, walk, and feed dogs. Afterwards, I help to clean the floors and spray a “flavor of the day” for the dogs (which is just like a different flavored air freshener designed to calm and stimulate them). After I make sure all the dogs are taken care of, I do the laundry and then make my way to the cats. I feed and clean the cats and afterwards I sweep, mop, and disinfect the area that they are in. Once the cats are taken care of, I resume looking after the dogs and doing any tidbits of work that are requested of me. One of the main duties I am assigned is to give the dogs enrichment. I particularly enjoy this part of my day because it helps keep the dogs entertained and it is funny to watch them with their toys/food.
I am predominantly assigned to work with the dogs, but my supervisors, Mantat and Mary, often give me other tasks that I am more than happy to complete that may involve interacting with the cats or doing paperwork or touring people or giving presentations to school groups, etc.
I manage my responsibilities by making sure that I do whatever is asked of me right away so that I do not forget. I also have fallen into a routine that enables me to make sure I stay on top of the things I am responsible for.
So far, I have not only learned how to care for healthy cats and dogs, but I have also learned to care for sick cats and dogs. I have also managed to develop my presenting skills a tiny bit as well as my touring skills. I think I have also become a little better with communicating with people I am unfamiliar with, such as potential buyers. The most helpful thing I believe I have learned so far at internship is how to be responsible for maintaining an upbeat, clean environment which is good for and makes not only the animals happy, but the people happy too.

Animal Haven was founded in 1967. The non-profit shelter started in Hollis, Queens with it’s mission being to take as many stray animals off the streets and aide them in finding loving homes as was possible. In 1978, the shelter moved to Flushing, Queens where it was a house shelter. Then in 2009, the shelter moved to it’s current and bigger location in SoHo, Manhattan. Being a non-profit shelter, Animal Haven relies on it’s donations and grants from generous benefactors in order to stay operational. Animal Haven has had multiple animals shown on television, along with many events that highlight Animal Haven’s success.
