He gives a quick nod, his small tail wagging a little, though he doesn’t take notice.

“Yes please. I would like that, I was about to make the offer myself. I can think of some books you would like. I think that so far you only do not like books with sudden surprise twist endings, judging from last time. There are many books that do not have those.”

A sip of tea is taken. “I trust you to pick out good material, if this was anything to go by,” Which was his way of saying yes, this would certainly be happening a second time. “I hope the rain never stops.” The sound made the entire atmosphere.

That brownie is taken, and munched on as he starts purring. He was sure to fall asleep soon. But he’d try to stay awake for a while longer.

“I want to thank you for everything you have done for me. I have done it before, but I do not think it will ever be enough.”

“I should say the same.” Which was about as much as the same as he was going to say.

“Tomorrow I’m off. Maybe we can do something. Just the two of us.” Things were usually going three ways now, not that he minded very often. “Tomorrow will be a good day.”

“Psh, ya think I didn’t get enough meat on my bones this winter?” he’s now straightened up some, just to accentuate it even more.

“And I ain’t even tryin’ to lose any this time, seein’ as I can actually like it and how it came to be.”

“I see nothing.”

He sees everything, and he approves very much of the change in Bean’s physique.

“…I wanna come live with you guys.”

He felt lonely here. Friends couldn’t visit all the time, he understood that. And he felt like he couldn’t always go and hang out with them himself. He didn’t want to end up being clingy and annoying.

Not to mention that he couldn’t do anything if he couldn’t sleep or if he woke up from a bad dream. Those times were the loneliest. He couldn’t just go one room over to find comfort.

He’d still come visit, of course. He had his job and his friends here. And the occasional travelers that seemed to find their way to his house when they had nowhere to go. He hoped he’d manage to catch those during his visits, lest they have to stay outside when no one else would take them in.

“…Ya already experienced life with me durin’ the winter though. I sure hope you’re suuuure you’re ready for pretty much a lifetime of that.”

“I know exactly what I am getting.”

He did experience life with Bean as an actual housemate. Oddly enough, he preferred it. Even when he had a voice, Bark was a quiet person. The bear was quiet by nature, and with both of them being naturally quiet, it meant things sounded desolate a lot of the time. Bean added life to what felt like a dead house with living residents. Of course he wanted that.

Not to mention he could feel comfortable enough with himself around the duck to admit to this. It had taken two years, but he could say he felt mostly comfortable with himself around Bean.

“And it is exactly what I want.”

That was a true statement. It almost felt like there would be an actual family living there. Like the missing piece of a puzzle was coming together. 

“We’ll have to hold a feast to celebrate. After all, you are a twig. You need meat on those bones.”

He heard that. And he’d just been about to ask if Ray wanted that too. Maybe he knew? Or maybe he just happened to say it.

Needless to say, the squirrel was pulled into a hug.

“…I am happy here but…it’s lonely.”

“And you don’t have to quit any job. I don’t live near the hospital but that does not stop me from coming in on a regular basis for my shift.” Another pause, a more serious tone present on his face. “Both of us would prefer it if you just lived at my house. But the choice is yours. He will never ask of himself, he is too shy, and you know that. He does not want to feel as though he might pressure your decision. But he worries about you. I already made my feelings on that subject clear when I asked you to move in well over a year ago.”

“…Why? Is somethin’ urgent happenin’?? It sounds urgent.”

Like a wanted poster. If Ray’s house was replaced with a prison anyway.

“...Put simply, Bark wants you to live with us. But he doesn’t want to ask because he thinks you’re happy here.”

Pause.

Very, very quiet voice.

“And maybe I want you to live with us also. Maybe.”

“…Yeah I do. I mean, I’ve been back here for a little over a month. I think someone would mention if I was declared dead just ‘cause I spent the winter at your house.”

“Okay but you’re coming to live with me dead or alive.”

Even though the dead part would mean Bean wasn’t really living.

“Are not.”

He scratches at his neck some.

“I think I can deal with the people in that city. I have been out there a few times. And I have also been assured no harm would befall me there by the figure of authority. I think I will be fine. I suppose we could always watch from a window, but I would rather not.”

That would have felt…sad to him, honestly.

“I always thought the eggs themselves were food. Well. Chocolate food. Even though an actual egg would not be wrong either.”

“Are too.”

A shrug is given.

“If that’s how you feel. I will go with you if you want to go.” Even though egg hunts felt childish to him. For Bark’s sake, he would go without any hesitation. “Some people do it differently. I have heard of real eggs being used, of plastic eggs being used, and of chocolate eggs being used.” The hospital always used plastic eggs for the children, as they were generally considered safer for those on  specialized diet.

“It is your decision.”

“Are you sure? What about feeding bears?”

Snort.

His smile soon fades a little.

“Me too. Would you like to visit him this weekend? He said there will apparently be an Easter egg hunt happening. I have not really witnessed one of those before. They sound silly.”

“Bears are too skinny.”

Words spoken with a smirk.

“They are silly. And there will be a lot of people there. But if you are feeling up to being social, I would go with you. Or we could hide Easter eggs around my house for him to find. It is certainly big enough. And we could put food inside of them.”

“You certainly like doing that.” 

It was cute. And he liked how the squirrel brought him a warm fresh out of the dryer blanket each time. He had to enjoy that while he could. Soon it’d be too warm to enjoy warm blankets.

“There is nothing more important than laundry.

It’s quiet around here lately.”

It used to be much louder. With how many months passed, he had grown accustomed to the added sound. “I suppose that I have not gotten used to that just yet.”

“Yes.

Which means it is time to do laundry.”

“But I like working out.”

Blink blink.

“Then why?”

“Because that’s where the food is and that is the only workout you need.”

“.....I was not prepared for this question.”

He blinks a few times, then leans down and nudges the squirrel with his snout.

…He was being dramatic.

“I may never get up again.”

Over dramatic indeed.
