We all just want reading to be fun. We all just want to sit down with a story we’ll love and get lost in the beauty of it.
But when you’re marginalized, it doesn’t work that way. Almost every book recommendation I’ve gotten from Tumblr has been problematic, and I don’t mean “there were some poor word choices” problematic. I mean “sends me spiraling into a deep depression” problematic. I mean “leaves me wondering why the world hates me so much” problematic. I mean “considers giving up reading, my greatest past time for most of my life because I’m afraid I’ll never find a book that doesn’t hate the very essence of who I am problematic”.
And then we ask you all to be kind in what you rec, to listen to people who are hurt, and not support the boos that are hurting us, and what do we get? We get told we’re bullies. We get told we’re censoring. We get told to kill ourselves. I’m not even sure why we question the way publishing and books treat us when people on this website prove that’s just how the general populace feels.
Look, you want to have fun reading? So do I, but I don’t have that privilege when most books don’t even consider me human. Wanting. To. Ignore. Problematic. Books. Is. A. Privilege. If you can’t see that, maybe you should consider why your comfort is more important than ours. You should consider why your ability to enjoy a book matters more than the fact that people will use what’s written in these books to justify our genocide. Look at that scale. Look at it again. Now ask yourself why you want me quiet?
And before you argue about how your mental illness makes you need a reprieve, I’m mentally ill too. So are most of my POC friends. We don’t get that privilege. Why don’t you care about that?
oh my gosh

Are we all crying together on this warm Tuesday night in June
@ everyone who went through a period of having no friends, who ate alone, who had a point in their life where they were too embarrassed to tell their parents they had no one to play with after school: I love you. I know it hurts and I know it’s hard but it’s not your fault. Things will grow and change. You will find people who you click with and they will love you too. You deserve positive friendship relationships just like anyone else. And if you’re still going through this phase, you’re strong, and things will change for you too. You are not alone, there are people experiencing the same thing you are, find them, you deserve positivity and companionship. Keep your head up.
the smell of the wind, rain, and earth all at once is so overwhelmingly calm and gives me so much serotonin it’s unimaginable

You know, guys, it is possible to think “I am fucking sick of this lockdown and I want it to end as soon as possible so that I can hug my friends again and go and see my family” and also think “we shouldn’t end the lockdown yet because it puts people at risk”.
Those two separate thoughts can co-exist, despite everyone on this hellsite wanting you to think that if you’re sick of quarantine and want it to be over already, it means you’re a fat ass capitalist who wants poor people to die.
Humans are social creatures. We need proper interaction and we are not designed to be isolated from each other for long periods of time. It’s ok to be frustrated at not being able to interact with your friends and family, whilst also knowing that it’s necessary at the moment.
For god’s sake, stop shitting on people who are missing their friends and families.
