Respectful Reunion [Wash&Connie]
The womanâs entire body trembled as it all was really becoming real for her.
She had been gone for over ten years, and nearly all of her friends were dead.Â
Sheâd been deemed dead for ten years, and hadnât been in any position where she couldnât made sure her teammates he survived. Thus, they were gone. No explanations. No being told about what had killed them, or why, or the circumstances.Â
They were just fucking dead.
"Oh my God," Connie finally sobbed openly, something she never did before.Â
The very private young woman had never been one to start crying in front of others. Sheâd tough it out, handle the upset feelings she felt until she was alone and able to cry by herself. Pretty silently, at that. Wash only ever comforted her when he knew the signs that showed she was upset, and would end up following her to her room a while later.
"This c-canât be real. No. No. No-no-no-no-no-no-noâŚ" She cried, tightly pulling her knees close to her chest and wrapping her arms around them before crying into them.Â
"Reggie wouldnâtâ Texas sheâ Maineâ" She couldnât finished a thought, let alone a sentence, as she cried for her fallen friends.
Wash was - well, Washington was floored. Connie's shoulders were shaking and she was crying, open sobs wracking her body and Wash didn't know what to do. He'd never seen her like this before. Not even on those nights when they had quiet, personal conversations until the early hours of the morning. Not when she'd told him about her own anxieties. Wash had never seen Connie shed a tear and certainly not like this.
Torn between touching her as some form comfort or staying where he was, Wash made a slow glance towards the entrance of the base to make sure none of his teammates were returning. No matter what he did, one thing was for sure, and that was that he didn't want one of them poking in now of all times.
"Connie, it's - it's - " Okay? No, fuck that.
Washington sighed and his shoulder slumped as he finally moved forward. He couldn't take seeing Connie like this. Crouching down in front of his old friend, Wash reached out to rest a hand on Connie's slim shoulder, squeezing gently. This was far from the Connie he knew. She'd always been strong and unwavering - not that she still wasn't, but that was something new. Something so out of the ordinary that Wash felt weirdly panicked, his brows drawn tight and a little frown on his lips.
"The project - the AI's, I mean - it was no good. It really messed some of us up and Maine was⌠Maine changed." Wash fished for the right words, trying to ignore the aching pangs of hurt as he let himself think of the Freelancers for the first time in a long time. "His AI persuaded him and he became 'The Meta' as the project fell apart. He wanted everyone's AI's and not everyone was so willing to give them up. The Meta did whatever it took take the AI's, Connie."
