big part of my month was working at a portable altars workshop with trans friends and organizations in a huge museum in my city, so i chose it as the base for all the other elements; as of right now it is missing several embroidered animals, mars and venus, and im thinking about adding clouds to the background, but i also want to add clouds to april and may ...... its been a. couple of "airy", dissociative months so it feels fitting but I don't like such a blatant motif repetition so idk we shall see

I made a useful bag to put things in. It's heavy cotton twill with woven stripes in off white & navy, and I don't remember how many years ago I found it at the thrift store, but I know I wouldn't have bought it nowadays because I don't particularly like these colours. Nice to have used most of it up for a non-clothing item! I sewed it at work on the industrial, on a few days when I finished early. Some years ago I made a similarly very large bag, and I sometimes wish I had more than one, and now I do. It's just right for holding large amounts of fabric or clothing, especially if your friend has borrowed your one and only IKEA bag.

​It's super simple, just some rectangles! Grocery bags, being large and not in need of precision, are one of the few things I use inches for. The main body of this particular bag was cut about 51" x 34", because that's how big the largest part of the cotton remnant was, and folded in half and the sides sewn up with flat felled seams. You can't fell down the edge all the way to the corner, but just go as far as possible. The seam allowance for the side seams was a wee bit more than half an inch I think, and the hem allowance for the top was 2".

The handles are 24" x 4" but then they need the corners cut off so the bottoms won't be too bulky when those edges are folded in to form a point. The doodle on the right is the shape the end should be once it's sewn and turned.

Those are sewn with a half inch seam allowance and then turned right sides out, pressed with the seam positioned in the middle, and topstitched on either side as well as down that middle seam just so the layers don't get deformed through use.

For the bottom corners of the bag itself you mark a straight line along the bottom between the two corners. Then you just line up the side seam with that line, and sew perpendicularly across the corner (right sides together) at a width of (on this particular bag) 8".

Then you just topstitch that corner down flat to the bottom, taking a little detour at the tip for the bit of felling you couldn't reach while doing the side seam.

On regular grocery bags I cut the body more like 47" x 21", and I sew the bottom corners a bit wider than the width of an egg carton.

(Also, no the stripey bag can't stand up, it's thick but quite soft.)

have u ever wanted to handmake a mamianqun (ma mian skirt)? boy do i have the sheet for you!

u can open this in excel (ugh), google sheets (eurgh) or better yet, libreoffice calc. Instructions on how to make your own ma mian skirt, some pictures, and all of the math done for you. Intermediate level sewing (or beginner with audacity). I've done mine all handsewn but you can use a machine if you want.

This is a great thing to make if you have an extra bedsheet/comforter cover/etc lying around. You /will/ need a lot of fabric.

This pattern uses only rectangles: no curves or weird shapes.

I haven't tested this on other body shapes besides my own, but since all of the measurements are input by the user I'm pretty sure it will work for a very large range of sizes

Time for handsewing (i'm relatively fast tho) is about 10 to 12 hours. Time for cutting and pressing and measuring is about 3 to 5 hours.

last saturday the "soft graphics" lab i joined began, it is a 10 week thing in which we will explore cross stitch and crochet, and our first assignment (so to speak) is to create our own typography and to choose a phrase to cross stitch using it, I haven't figured all of the letters just yet, but i already got the phrase down!

if it were my choice i would have used half stitches on this for the thinner sections, but im trying to be in a learning disposition and to heed the orientation given by the person dictating the lab of trying to use only full stitches to really have to solve a technical challenge and i love the result ngl

ive been really focusing on making it cohesive and legible, and for the letters to be able to follow one another regardless of who goes next to each other

i also like that it works as an alpha pattern and can be translated to several mediums, had i used the half stitches it wouldn't have worked outside of cross stitching

still dont know what colors to choose though, im between a red, a really light pink and another one with a hue between those to be able to make gradients or the same but with dusty lilacs

very exciting stuff! ive been cross stitching for years but had never learnt how to make the reverse neat like this, and while I don't think ill bee too precious about it in my personal projects after the lab (i usually work on a smaller scale and the direction of the stitches and avoidance of bulk is more important to me than the neat back) im very happy to have added this skill to my stash 💌

for what ill bring next week i think im going to go with a cream linen i want to use to sew a megan cami top by loveless jamie; still unsure about what the design itself will be but im torn between a graphic i made myself, or some doors from the antique pattern library and the phrase "las puertas del paraíso son estrechas"

How are you choosing the phrases for your cross stitch?

I've been collecting them for a while in a text file. Jotting them down when I think of them. Mostly from my life, memories, scraps of conversations. Then I weed out the duplication - or duplicated themes, the ones that are too obvious, or just don't fit. Some get weeded out and then put back, some get tweaked and tweaked again, ending up as something completely different. Until I'm happy enough to start charting them up as cross stitch elements (that happens on a graph pad. Actually let me take a photo of a page lol.)

I think I ended up with about 24 phrases - so another 7 or so to stitch.

a couple of friends who happen to be twins turn 30 and im making them a micro cross stitch of two vintage shirts of a local team they are huuuge fans of

these are the original shirts (link to blue, link to red)

the colors of the team are red and blue and i loved the idea of making them a sort of complementary situation in which each shirt is complete piece in and of itself but is also part of a two-piece composition, and i love the design of both of them

so i got to drawing, and these are the sketches i came up with, based on those shirts

there is something i enjoy so much about creating accurate objects on this particular way i have of approaching cross stitch designing, which is based around the smallest element and building something both simplified from the real object, but detailed enough to be recognizable using the same "smallest possible" principle around it

the constrictions lead me to making choices that make them efficient and visually readable, it is a very enjoyabe challenge

procreate has no way of putting a line through pixels, so this is a rough idea that i then polished on pc stitch

yall im SO happy with these designs holy shit!

ive already stitched a couple of rows from the top of the blue one, and im sure i'll have them ready for next friday when i hope ill be able to give it to them

Now that this project has been delivered to its recipient, I can brag about it online a little.

I made this Elizabethan petal hussif for a friend who received an award for her historical costuming work. Hussifs were often used as sewing kits with spots for all of the notions you need for a project. Wives would send them with their husbands to war with extra uniform buttons and repair supplies. This one has an inner pouch area that can fit a small project or pieces thereof.

My friend likes owls, pomegranates, blurple, and starlight. Hopefully this mashup harmonizes nicely. I worked almost entirely from scraps already in my stash.

I self drafted the pattern, but it's approximated from this write up and Sheila Marshall's book "Elizabethan Needlework Accessories". My library didn't have the book, so I relied on Google images.

This little owl friend is a needle minder by greennerddesigns on Etsy. I chopped up a pin and stuck a magnet on there.

The lucette braided cord nearly thwarted me, but we got there in the end. I opted for fancy silk ribbon for the inner pouch instead. I swear lucette gave me arthritis.

I'm still pretty new to embroidery, so this was a real level up project for me. I used wool felt for the leaves and pomegranates to give them a little dimensionality (and to better hide any satin stitch sins) TIL, embroidering velveteen sucks.

The pomegranates are so crunchy! I fondled them frequently throughout the making of this. But the lattice stitch with tiny gold details is my favorite part.

The laurels are a symbol of the award she's receiving. I don't love how they turned out, but they hold up okay from a distance.

Blue beads are from my local embroidery shop, Country Crafts. Silver loops came from my stash. Owl scissors from onethriftystitcher on Etsy. Wool pieces are from my local wool store Black Sheep Wool.

Overall, I have some improvements to make if I ever do another one, but after some 100 hours of work poured into this little guy, I couldn't be more proud of myself. I hope she loves it and uses it until it falls apart.
