Jefferson. You know me as the Mad Hatter but I despise the nickname. I've one purpose in this cursed world and it's to find my daughter and be a family once more. There would be time for pleasantries later. Right now, whoever this kid was running from were getting closer. The haze of purple smoke rose from the hat, alerting him that the portal was open. “Then shall we?” He gestured and without waiting for another words, he took Jack by the wrist and pulled him through the portal and into the Enchanted Forest.
Jack squeaked a bit when he was grabbed, but he gripped the lapel of the hatter’s jacket, eyes squeezed shut.
The Hatter nearly smirked at the squeak that came from his new companion. He half expected Jack to vomit in the transition. It would not be the first time. With a thud, Jefferson’s feet hit the ground and he scooped up the hat, flipping it to rest on top of his head. “Why were you running?”
Jack sighed, “My country. Officials from my country were here, and saw me. I ran because I din’t want to go back and face that douche I call a father and my people call king.” he huffed, trying his best not to pass out from oxygen deprivation.
"Douche?" The Hatter wrinkled his nose, unfamiliar with the terminology and the definition of it. "You did mention that you were once a prince and that interests me, I must admit." Jefferson gestured for Jack to follow him, familiar with the area and knowing there was a tavern nearby. "What troubles a young prince so much that he has to run from his family and his people?"

All the while that Jefferson had been speaking, he noticed things about his wife. Things that were strange and he assumed caused from her captivity. The way she stared at the food for a long while before she picked at it with trembling fingers. A frown crossed his face and for the moment, he set the matter of Grace and her other family aside. “Alice…what is it?” He asked, brow knit in concern for her. He moved a hand to brush away the tear that had escaped her. It nearly broke his heart to see that something as simple as breakfast could put his wife into tears after Wonderland. The Red Queen was a harsh woman and in only further implanted into his mind that he would see her fall. Regina was like a child compared to the Red Queen.
“You’ve no need to apologize.” He said gently, stroking his thumb over her cheekbone before taking it away so that she could eat. They had so much to talk about. So much to learn about each other these days. Alice had much to catch up on with Grace. Hell, they both did. Things here were different than they were in Wonderland. Calmer. Though Jefferson had had several dealings with old friends from there and not all of them were pleasant. “Alice…talk to me. If there’s something that you want to talk about that happened in Wonderland, you know you can. You know that you can tell me anything.” It occurred to him that his wife had not seen the scar that he bore on his neck and Jefferson had been careful to hide it from her. He knew that he couldn’t forever but he didn’t want to see the look on Alice’s face when she finally did.
Alice didn’t reply to his first question, instead choosing to focus on eating her food in small, neat bites. She wondered if food would always interest her now with so many choices and the wide variety of flavours that were available to her now. Having breakfast with Jefferson was so mundane it was almost laughable. Breakfast had been a trial each day in her past life.
She wrinkled her nose at him when he told her that she could tell him anything. She could but didn’t mean she wanted to. Nonethless, Alice set down her tea cup that she had been washing her food down with and pieced a piece of bacon into small pieces on her plate. “It has been a very, very long time. I am sorry for having tears when it is only frustration with myself,” the woman explained before nibbling on a bite of the food he had prepared. It was half done and she was savouring each bit of it.
“The Red Queen was like kin to my governesses. Lots of rules. Rules are important,” she hummed as if reminding herself before giving Jefferson a rueful smile. The former saviour gave in to his asking, knowing the no secrets was best between them. It had been a lifetime since they had been husband and wife. “When I was taken out of the dungeon to eat, my ankle or wrist was chained to the throne on a long leash to make sure I would be good. She had to give me permission to eat because she was head of house. If I broke a rule, I had to wait long times.” Her blue gaze shifted from his face when she was done explaining to her food, making sure she didn’t spill anything as she picked at it.
There was an overwhelming sense of anger that stole over the Hatter as he listened to Alice speak of such horrors. To know that that vicious snake of a woman had treated his wife in such a manner made him feel sick. It only fueled his want to see her head on a pike. He only hoped that Mirana found it within her soon to fight for her land. Wonderland was rightfully hers. Gently, the Hatter took hold of his wife's chin and turned her face to look at him, not caring about any spilled food. "Alice, listen to me. You're not in Wonderland anymore and you're not with her. You are here with Grace and I and you are never going back there. There are no rules here. No chains or other such matters of restraint."
Jefferson pressed a gentle kiss to his wife's forehead. "I will not force you to speak of things before you are ready, my love. When you feel that you are ready then I will always be here to listen." Leaning back from the woman, he waited until she finished with her food before taking the tray and setting it aside. "Please, Alice...tell me what it is that I can help you with. Whatever you need you only have to but ask for it. You have much to learn about living in freedom once more...well...as free as this town will allow us to be." The Hatter sighed softly. "I fear that we will not be able to leave for quite sometime for if we cross the border then Grace will lose her memory of us once more."
Still, whatever it took to ease Alice's transition into life in Storybrook, he would do for her. Currently, she needed clothing. She couldn't very well walk around town in Wonderlandian fashion and hoped to pass under the radar. "We should go into town today, my darling. Find you some new clothes to wear that won't have you sticking out like a sore thumb." He offered her a gentle smile. "What say you?"
Jack rounded the corner, hand sin his pockets and hair uncharacteristically unkempt. He sighed a bit in content, happy that he can just walk around without staring. Then he saw it, that familiar orange flag with a butterfly insignia. He stopped, swearing openly as he saw officials walk from a government building. turning and running as fast as he could when they looked at him. He had no where to go. They found him. And he was running.
The hat worked once more and Jefferson couldn’t resist the urge but to use it. It had been so long but this time, he was staying far far away from Wonderland. What land this was, he didn’t know but he didn’t think it was magical. Everywhere he looked there was the same insignia and he only assumed that this was a monarchy. He was careful about where he walked, unfamiliar with this land and that was when he saw him. Jack. A boy that he’d met briefly who seemed troubled. And he was running. Running from what he didn’t know but he looked panicked. The Hatter moved swiftly, catching up to his look-a-like and taking hold of his sleeve. “Come quick.” He said, twisting the hat so a portal opened. “If you want to escape then come with me.” He hissed.
Jack blinked at the man holding him, completely confused. His fear left his eyes, his vision now clear and the face of the hatter. “Jefferson…..” he smiled a bit. “I’ll go wherever to get away from them.”

Alice scooted back more so that she could sit in a tailor’s seat with her legs covered by the sheet. She took the tray from her husband and set it in front of her out of the way of her shifting weight. The varieties of foods in this new land were strange, but it appeared that breakfast had remained relatively the same. Eggs, bacon, tea. Little things like that were normal and made her almost cry. Alice looked at the tray for a long moment, listening as he spoke but not quite touching anything yet.
When she realized what she was waiting for, she almost hated herself. Alice was waiting to be told she could eat. It had been a week and she was still waiting. It was going to take a little while to get over that and she knew it. The things that her Hatter were saying were easy for her to acknowledge but her trembling fingers as she took a piece of bacon bothered her more. She pulled it in half to put in her mouth before she realized a tear had escape and she wiped it away as she chewed. She gave a wry smile at the rest of the food as her tears dried up.
“Rude. That was rude, I’m sorry,” she murmured, her Wonderlandian mannerisms in full force first thing in the morning. “Thank you for the food. Yes, Grace should be allowed to see her parents. Long, long times cause long, long bonds.” Alice ignored what had occurred as she picked at her food to savour it. She brushed her thumb over a Calla lily before taking her tea cup in her hand to sip at the warm liquid.
“Whatever you think, my Hatter. I do not have the experience you do in parenting,” she reminded softly though she gave him an equally soft smile.

She unbuttoned the top button of her shirt, pulling it down slightly to reveal a scar on her neck similar to his. "Venture a guess. As for Grace, she approached me, and I simply asked if she was your daughter."
His eyes fell to that scar and widened in horror. Someone else bore that mark. "You are me...and effeminate me..." The Hatter shook his head. "How strange indeed..."
Upon receiving the note she sighed heavily, not having wished to reveal herself, but finding it the once acceptable situation. With a snap of her fingers she appeared in front of him as the letters before him, "Satisfied?"
The Hatter eyes the woman that now stood before him. "Who are you?" He asked, getting straight to the point. "How did you meet my Grace?"
A NOTE APPEARED IN FRONT OF HER, SENT FROM HER UNKNOWN COMPANION. AFTER READING IT SHE REPLIED: “I AM A FRIEND, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT FROM ME.” SHE RETURNED THE LETTER AS IT HAD BEEN SENT TO HER. ((Ignore these caps. My computer is being a jerk))
Another note was sent back to the faceless person. "Then if I've nothing to worry about why hide? Show yourself."
