Aomine had the same feelings, but he had gotten an offer to attend a prestigious school in America for basketball. No, he couldn't just leave his home in Japan, couldn't just leave behind Kagami. He had nearly given up that opportunity of a lifetime, even though the logical part of him told him to go for it. And so did Kagami. Kagami insisted that Aomine follow his dreams. Possibly NBA? Who could say no to that? They would be crazy, and Kagami would never allow that regret to haunt Aomine for the rest of his life if he had said no to it. Argument after argument, Aomine finally agreed to it.
They really tried to give it their all with their relationship. Their first year wasn't so bad. Granted, a lot of times, they had only been able to talk through online chatting, video calls, or voice calls, but they made it work. The second year was straining. Kagami had been unable to really let go of the fact that they had only seen each other for two weeks in the previous summer when he had flown to America to see Aomine, and because of Aomine's commitments to his team and studies, it wasn't like they spent the time extensively together. Many times, it was sitting on the couch once Aomine was done with his homework and summer practices that they were able to spend any sort of time together. By then, Aomine was exhausted, eventually falling asleep on the couch with Kagami.
But by the summer before their third year, Kagami couldn't take it anymore. It was too much. What made them even think they could keep a long distance relationship half a world away? It was hard enough communicating more often as the years passed because their schedules didn't lessen. Eventually, one day, Kagami had to say it during their voice call. For Aomine, it was around noon, Kagami close to midnight when they spoke, "Daiki, I think we should break up."
Silence. "What?"
"I didn't stutter, Daiki. We need to break up." Kagami clasped a hand over his mouth so his crying wouldn't turn into sobs. "We can't keep doing--"
A loud slam from Aomine hitting his desk in anger sounded before his voice filled Kagami's ears, a voice that he hadn't heard in years, "Like hell we can't! Of course we can! What? Do you really think I'd just let you break up with me because we 'can't'? The fuck kind of reasoning is that, Taiga?"
"Do you really think we can keep doing this, Daiki!? We can't just keep calling before one of us lands in the hospital for exhaustion! You sure as hell can't afford that shit! Think about your future for five minutes, you fucking moron! Do you really think we can do this for another two years?!"
Kagami's pants from his frustration were the only sounds Aomine heard for the moment. "We've already done it for two years, Taiga. We can still--"
"We can't, Daiki! We can't! I can't take this anymore. I miss you too much. Just.. Let it go. I can't hold you back anymore..." Kagami's silent tears made him have to stop speaking, his sobs nearly breaking whatever strength he mustered up to do this. "I'm so sorry--"
"You're just running away, Taiga," Aomine spat angrily on the other line, "Whatever you want. Coward."
Beep--
The dial tone was the last Kagami remembered before he had sobbed himself to sleep that night. He was being a coward, but how could he let Aomine's future slip away if he were to be put into the hospital because of exhaustion, malnutrition, or any other physical ailment because he was putting Kagami first before anything else? He had a promising future, and Kagami was the only thing holding him back. For countless days after their breakup, he did his best to convince himself he had done the right thing. He did it for Aomine. He made the best decision for their relationship.
But it was selfish, Aomine believed. He hadn't bothered to even discuss their breakup, and he didn't believe Kagami wanted to hear a thing about it since he had consistently interrupted him. Kagami never interrupted him. If he did, it was to annoy him, but this situation was... It wasn't normal. He could hear every single nuance in Kagami's voice, the way he said his name. God, what could he have done differently? Could he have came more for breaks? Could he have tried to call and message more? Video chat more? Try to show him more in person that he loved him, the first person he really, truly loved that was beyond what anyone thought Aomine could even muster in something that wasn't his family or close friends? Kagami was different. He was always different, and he was special to him. But what he did was selfish, and Aomine's response was... He never wanted to admit it but how he used to be before he met Kagami. Cynical, critical, harsh, and most of all, cold. His teammates noticed this, and despite still being as proficient as he always was at basketball, his time had solely devoted for basketball and his studies. He never spent a moment where he could think of Kagami because he knew as soon as he did, he'd leave America to be with him. He needed to forget, to drown himself in basketball and his future that Kagami cared so much about. There was nothing else important to Aomine but basketball and his career. Just like what Kagami wanted.
And they followed their paths. Kagami had graduated in the top 5% of his class because just like Aomine, he had solely devoted his time to his studies and to his intramural sport. After having suffered a knee injury in his third year, a month after they had broken up, Kagami had to be placed off of the university team, and once his recovery period ended, he was replaced. He was not as mobile as he used to be.
Aomine didn't graduate very high academically, but his playing on the court had promised him a nice spot on an NBA team as the first string power forward. He accomplished his goal, and at the request of Momoi, he had taken the opportunity to visit Japan while he had time before he would finally begin his career. Aomine's plane had arrived earlier than expected, but Momoi was busy until their arranged meet up time, so he took the moment to walk a very familiar neighborhood. It had been three years since he had last came here, the last time having been the first summer after his first year of university. He had stared straight ahead, walking that familiar path from a Maji Burger that he had just passed when he heard the dribbling of a basketball and a lone pair of sneakers skidding across the concrete court. He turned his head, but the sight nearly made his heart burst. A head full of red hair flashed across his vision, but it wasn't nearly as fast as he remembered it, which for some odd reason pained him. He watched that dunk he was always enchanted with, but it wasn't nearly as powerful as he remembered it. His feet automatically moved towards the opening of the court, his hand holding the gate in a quiet motion, but his voice was not. His body seemed to just forgo the fact that he controlled it. For that moment, something else entirely did. "Taiga?"
That dunk was horrible, and Kagami knew it was, but the pain in his knee was almost too much. Even after so many months of recovery, his injury just wouldn't let him return to his true potential. Hunched over, his hands on his knees, and profusely sweating, he tried to catch his breath, letting the ball roll away. He tried to focus, his thick brows furrowed in concentration and frustration, but his face had froze at his name being called. He could have broke down right at that sound. It was the same voice he heard in his dreams, the voice heard in his memories when he would relive them in reality, the voice he heard in the many voice mails he still kept, that voice he heard when he would replay all of those home movies month after month, day after day. He slowly raised his head up, his body doing the same and stared at the familiar but different face that was burned in the back of his eye sockets. His chest ached as his own voice seemed to have a mind of its own, "Daiki?" His feet began to move instinctively towards the other, but he stepped too hard on his left leg, letting out a grunt and nearly collapsing over from the pain in his knee.
The sudden grunt caused Aomine to finally regain his composure, but he hurried to Kagami's side, quickly and essentially skidding to a halt to check on Kagami. "Hey, are you alright?" He inspected Kagami's legs, and when he spotted the surgery cut, the scars from the staples in his perfect skin, his eyes had widened and looked at Kagami. "The fuck happened to your knee?" He asked, almost angry.
"Wh-What?" Kagami panted softly, gritting his teeth because he seemed to put too much strain on his knee with his practicing. After all, he had been there since noon, and the sun was nearly setting on the horizon behind them.
"Your knee, Taiga. What the fuck happened to your knee?" Aomine repeated, easing Kagami to sit down on his behind and relaxing his knee. He knew it was surgery, but how did it happen?
"Messed up my knee. Surgery. Not much else." Kagami stated in short breaths, relaxing on his arms behind him and trying to bend his knee, but it twitched harshly with pain. "Does it look like much else?" He asked with a frustrated expression on his face at Aomine, laughing meekly and fell back. "You come back and I can't even challenge you to a one-on-one. I'm pathetic," he tossed his arm over his face as he laid back, frustrated with himself, but a laugh left him instead. It wasn't Kagami's happy, carefree laugh; it was pained. Years of loneliness and pain overwhelmed him, and seeing Aomine was nearly too much for the moment.
Aomine sat there, almost a little dumbfounded but shocked. Shocked because this injured idiot wasn't even thinking about the pain in his knees. No, he was thinking of doing the one thing they had always done when they were together: play basketball. He could see the pain in his face, hear it in that laugh because they couldn't go all out like when they were younger. Time had changed them both, and Aomine wondered if it was for the better. "You're the biggest dumbass I have ever met," he suddenly said, still staring at Kagami, who still had his arm over his face. "I'm fucking pissed off I'm still in love with a fucking moron that worries less about himself and more about other people, you stupid fucking idiot. Who the fuck asked you to watch out for me? I sure as hell didn't. I could manage basketball and my studies and dating an idiot like you, you fucking asshole. It's your fault my fucking pride didn't let me come here sooner. I'm too in love with you to not do what you tell me to do, even though I didn't want to do it without you, you fucking prick. Why did you break up with me? Tell me, why, Taiga."
Kagami's eyes had widened beneath his arm, and when he moved his arm, he was shocked to see tears falling from Aomine's cheeks as he spoke. The insults, oh yeah, they registered, but everything else? It hit him hard. Hit him hard because he thought the same things. They could have done it, but he couldn't... "Because I was a coward," a pained, melancholic smile spread on Kagami's lips, the tears rolling off the corners of his eyes, a choked laugh leaving him, "I wanted to give you the best future because you deserved it. I didn't think it included me holding you back--"
"You've never held me back, Bakagami," Aomine roughly wiped away the tears in the calloused palm of his hand, his other hand clenching his pants leg. "You were my motivation. The whole fucking time. I did this for you, you piece of shit. I played basketball because I wanted to be able to come back and show you what I'd done. I wanted you to see me on TV and think about how awesome I am because I still am, you ass--"
"Daiki," Kagami cut him off quickly, reaching out to take the hand that was clenching his clothes and held it loosely. "I'm sorry. I really missed you too." He smiled, laughing with a few tears still falling. "I'm sorry for being so selfish. I've missed you a lot, you bastard." His laugh became meek at that point, beginning to sit up, but Aomine's arms had gathered him in close, holding onto him tightly. "Daiki, I'm sweaty--"
"Shut up. Don't ruin the moment," Aomine buried his nose into the crook of Kagami's neck, breathing in his scent, the scent he couldn't believe he nearly forgot all about.
"...You just ruined the moment," Kagami laughed quietly into Aomine's shoulder, his arms just as tightly holding onto him. "I love you, Daiki."
"Yeah, I love you too, Taiga," Aomine moved his head to stare at that aged but still just as handsome as ever face from his memories and leaned in to kiss him fully on the lips, passionately, but it was loving, filled with all of the pent up emotions and the thousands of kisses that had gone unshared because of their absences from one another. "You're a selfish asshole."
"Yeah, you are too," Kagami shook his head amusedly at Aomine once their kiss ended, their foreheads resting against each other's, one hand on the other's cheek and the other one tight around his body. They were in that same position together for what seemed like forever, and it nearly made up for the missed moments like these.
To the both of them, it felt like their lives were missing something. They had pursued their careers and dreams that had changed over the course of the years and the circumstances. They always wondered what was that sudden aching in their chests when they reflected on their lives, why they still felt unfulfilled. At that exact moment, they knew what they had been missing in their futures: one another.
"I haven't slept since then. I went home, ate, took a bath, then I went to lie down. But I couldn't sleep. My body was exhausted, but when I closed my eyes, I saw scenes from the game."
