Lähtökohtana oli korostaa torin kokonaisuutta valaisemalla toritilaa rajaavia julkisivuja. Valaistussuunnitelmassa määriteltiin, että uusien valaisinpylväiden sijoittelussa lähtökohdaksi tuli ottaa nykyisten valaisimien paikat. Ohjelma kuitenkin salli pylväiden sijoittelun tarkistamisen. Eräät ehdotukset sijoittivatkin valaisinpylväät ansiokkaasti siten, ettei valtioneuvoston ja yliopiston rakennusten keskirisaliittien kohdalle tule rakennusten näkyvyyttä häiritseviä pylväitä. Yhdessä ehdotuksessa oli perustellusti sijoitettu lisäpylväät kirkon puoleiselle sivulle ulkoporraslinjan ulkopuolelle - tallaiseen sijoitteluun olivat päätyneet jo 1950-luvun alussa maamme parhaat asiantuntijat. Palkintolautakunnan mukaan valaisinpylväiden sijoittelua on edelleen perusteltua tutkia suuniitelmaa kehittäessä.
The starting point was to emphasize the entirety of the square by illuminating the facades that border the square. The lighting plan specified that the placement of new lighting columns should be based on the locations of the existing lighting columns. However, the program allowed for revisions to the placement of the columns. Some proposals successfully placed the lighting columns in such a way that there would be no columns obstructing the visibility of the buildings near the central pediments of the Government and University buildings. One proposal rightly placed additional columns on the side facing the church, outside the line of the external staircase - this placement had already been decided upon by the best experts in our country in the early 1950s. According to the award committee, it is still justified to study the placement of the lighting columns when developing the design.
