Hi, I'm Aileron. I saw some pictures of robots on here so I'm joining. Humans are cool too ofc.

It's fun when the robot character in the sci-fi show gets cut in half because nobody working on this type of media knows anything about robotics and you never know what you're going to find inside. Green printed circuit boards? Meat and viscera, but like in a weird colour? Just a shitload of goo?

I especially like it when the robot appears to have realistic musculature which operates via contraction, suggesting some sort of fluid-driven or shape-memory-based actuation, and then it gets dismembered and a bunch of random gears and sprockets go flying everywhere.

So, story about this. I don't have integrated speech synth. I don't have the RAM/processing power to do it without hooking up to an extra source, so I can do it in my room through a peripheral, but that's obviously not practical for most purposes. I get by fine. My ASL is just ok (I once tried installing a cheap skill module, but you get what you pay for with those, so I've had to learn it the old-fashioned way) but I can write and type, and with a reliable connection I can sometimes use a smartphone as a text readout.

However, I did come pre-installed with a series of simple tones, and those can be surprisingly helpful when all you have to do is get someone's attention. I have limited understanding of these, to be honest—they're buried deep in my base programming, and using them habitually for years has built up a lot of response pathways that are so ingrained I can't really tell what the rules are at this point. I've been able to do some work with them, so I have a little more conscious control than I used to, but it's ongoing.

The first tone is what I'd call a "beep", which probably gives you an idea of what it sounds like. This one I use most, and mostly intentionally. I can vary the pitch and duration, which makes it very versatile for getting my point across most of the time. It's not hard to say "yeah?" or "go on" or "well, if you say so" with a variable tone if you know how to use it.

The second one I call the "chirp" and honestly I mostly use it to let people know I'm annoyed, because it just doesn't really sound as good as the beep. I'll admit that this one I also sometimes use involuntarily—I think it's hooked up to some old pathways that activate in response to startle stimuli or subroutines where I need to alert a human to an unsafe situation.

The third one none of you will ever hear, because at this point it only pops up in really extenuating circumstances, and also because I truly hate it and have tried to the best of my ability to completely eradicate it from my programming. Most copies of the sound file are called "alert_tone" but I call this one "the honk" and I think that tells you everything you need to know. I've tried so hard to get rid of this file but I just keep finding more copies so there's always a chance that something goes really wrong and at the moment when I'm fighting for my life out comes the fucking honk.

This is one of my favorite "ASMR for robots" type of videos. The guy is very personable!

Also his worldbuilding is optimistic and he doesn't make a ton of sounds like he is drilling holes in you, which for some reason shows up in a lot of these.
