Tommy chuckled, taking Aisha’s kind assurances in stride, and also happy to skate along keeping the conversation light and pleasant. It was a lovely day, he was with lovely company at a lovely restaurant. He wasn’t going to spoil the mood. Besides, he’d always hoped for a chance to chat with Aisha Campbell outside of work-related things. There was no way to ask Aisha without it sounding awkward; so this random encounter was like kismet, an opportunity to become acquainted - casually.
“Aussie social services aren’t that desperate to give their wards away to someone like me. Nah - I’ll stick to your first suggestion, yeah? Find someone far more reliable than me, and make babies the old-fashioned way. Or a surrogate - apparently they’re all the rage these days, with the upwardly mobile lot.”
He smiled, intrigued by the seemingly happy family life of Aisha. At least the one Aisha projected; and it was what Tommy wanted to believe in, anyway. “Toni’s a daddy’s girl, is she? What about the others?” He was sure Aisha was the sort of parent who loved chatting about their children; and Tommy was genuinely interested.
“Right - chips’ll do. Erm, fries,” he amended to her American ways, congenial and mild. “In England they put chili sauce and mayo all over the chips, if you ask. Best way to have them - especially after a night out, know what I mean.”
He clinked his beer glass against Aisha’s drink. “So no seafood for Aisha.- is that for health, ethics, or faith? Or a combination of all three?”
“Why are you belittling yourself? You won’t change my mind, I still think you’d be one hell of a dad, Tommy. Deal with it.” With a light shrug, Aisha took a brief time prior to continuing her perspective of it all. “But, well, the old-fashioned way is really fun. Even if it doesn’t lead to babies, it leads to a good time. When you know how to offer a good time to the other part, of course.”
For a long, long time, their husband was the main person they had been with. It was weird exploring someone new, getting to know their likes and dislikes. Truth being told, going back to her husband was the best part of their new adventures. He was the person they loved.
“Antonia is just-- it’s so frustrating carrying a child for nine months only to see that they are clearly all obsessed with the father. He’s her king, for sure. And I don’t know, I partially blame my job for keeping me sort of far from my children... the whole studying and preparing myself for it. But, I was really close to the twins from the get go, maybe Aaliyah more than Brian.” It was refreshing to express those thoughts out loud without thinking they’d be judged by it.
At least, Aisha would assume Tommy wouldn’t judge her. “Hey, you can call it chips. Chips, fries... in the end, it’s just so freaking delicious. And I like that idea, I know what you mean yes,” she chuckled.
“Kind of two out of those three. Allergies and also preference, the time I found out about my allergies was also the one time I tried it out and I didn’t like it... at all.”
