“Can I help you?” A young man asked from behind his desk. He had been watching her pace outside the center’s front door for the past 10 minutes before she came in.

She cleared her throat unnecessarily. “I’m here to start my community service…” she whispered the last few words with a disgusted look on her face.

“Okay, name?”

“Frederica Norman.”

The young man froze for a moment as recognition flashed on his face. He took a moment to really look at her now that she was in front of him. Everyone in the community had heard of what she’d done and they’d gathered big groups to read the story in the paper. She looks different out of handcuffs.

She seemed to harden under his knowing eyes. She knew the gays were usually a tight knit community and that they stuck together. She learned that much before she was arrested. Instead of doing prison time she plead down to a severe fine, house arrest and community service. The judge ordered her to help the people she hurt and told her she had to choose between the three lgbt shelters in the city.

The boy stood up, “Follow me please.”
