I was upset to hear that Chadwick Boseman passed away, and I was shocked that he was undergoing colon cancer treatments while doing the best work of his career. It reminded me that rates of colon cancer in patients under 50 are increasing, and there are racial disparities in both the number of patients and their survival rates. Doctors recommend that Black patients get screened at 45 instead of 50 in part due to genetic factors that make colon cancer more aggressive. Plus, symptoms of colon cancer like changes in bowel habits and stomach pain mimic other GI disorders like IBS, so doctors are less likely to screen patients under 50 with these symptoms.

If you have access to healthcare, please see a doctor if you’re experiencing the symptoms listed in the resources that I linked here. I didn’t say anything earlier, but I had my endoscopy 2 weeks ago because my GI doctor had a suspicion that I could have colon cancer even though I’m 31 and otherwise healthy.

Braiders in Iowa no longer need to get a cosmetology license to plait customers’ hair. Thanks to two Black women who brought a lawsuit against the state with a non-profit public interest law firm, stylists who practice unlicensed braiding will not face jail time. Aicheria Bell and Achan Agit filed and won a civil suit against the midwestern state with the Institute for Justice.

A law enacted July 1 made braiders exempt from Iowa’s cosmetology licensing laws. Before then, anyone who braided hair without taking 2,100 hours of courses at a cosmetics school – which can cost at least $20,000 – to obtain a license could be subjected to a misdemeanor charge. The citation was punishable by up to one year in prison. Now, braiders will simply need to register with the state.

The names of those killed by racism and police brutality are written along Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis. George Floyd was killed on this street in front of Cup Foods after being accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill. The site of his death has been converted into a large shrine.
