Coronavirus, George Floyd Killing, Protesters, looters: Our Unstable World What’s going on in our unstable world? First, America and the whole planet were stunned by a novel Coronavirus with almost every country placing their citizens in a quarantine or indoors. Then, came the senseless killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis followed by massive protests that spread into multiple cities. Yet, even as peaceful protesters marched on the streets, rioters infiltrating the crowds rushed into shops and department stores spreading fear and chaos. Looting, burnt buildings, violence and mayhem followed destroying the livelihood and the security of many minority and downtown communities. So what in the world is going on, and what’s next ? More chaos, more mayhem, more turmoil? What’s next? “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 ESV A Season of COVID-19 and racial unrest Like the billions who lived, experienced life’s many changing seasons, and then were laid to rest, we too are experiencing our own life seasons. We are indeed living in “unprecedented” times and seemingly an overwhelming and difficult season in life. Those who lived before us experienced their own seasons of laughter, peace, love, and dance. Yet, their good seasons were also interrupted by brutal seasons of global and civil wars, unrest, famine, plagues, slavery and injustice. It seems that we’re currently living through an “Unprecedented” life changing experiences and season of life. But, we live in a world that will always have a season for everything under the sun. What we’re experiencing today is what all other mortals before us have experienced in one form or another. Our earthly lives are made up of many seasons; some joyful and stable others harmful, and chaotic such as what we’re experiencing today. Truly, the COVID-19 pandemic with its social isolation and shut down of the whole world economy brought upon us a season of fear and confusion. Sadly, the senseless killing of George Floyd and its consequences ushered us into a new season of pain, anger, violence and unrest. It appears that the hidden sin of seeing one race inferior and another superior is bubbling up and manifesting itself in George’s killing, and other racial injustices. Protesters, Rioters & The Choke of Prejudice Apparently, the thousands of people of all races who are demonstrating are not only protesting the strangulation of George Floyd on a Minneapolis pavement. But they are also decrying the suffocation of many black or colored persons careers, opportunities to progress, talents, chances for promotion, and of a better life. They are loudly denouncing the inherent evil of racism, and prejudice that chokes a person of color’s sense of value, peace, security, acceptance, hopes and dreams. Not just in America but throughout the world. Friends, that’s what the legitimate and peaceful protesters are protesting. Justifiably, those who are genuinely hurting and those who fervently reject the injustice of racial discrimination want to be heard. And much like Martin Luther King, many are asking for desperately needed change peacefully, passionately, and with strong conviction. They wisely understand that looting, chaos, mayhem as witnessed in the streets of Minneapolis, New York, Chicago, Columbus, and Cincinnati, among many others, will not help the cause of racial equality. The Road To Redemption In my opinion, no single political party can redeem us from racial injustices. No one and nothing, including slogans, proposed laws, and various diversity or equal opportunity promises or committees, can bring us a genuine and lasting season of racial equality and reconciliation. I believe, it’s only a genuinely repentant and changed heart that vows to see others as equal to us, and not as inferior or superior, that will bring a real and lasting racial equality and true change in our cities and homes. It’s when you and me begin to see each other as equal and not regard each other as superior or inferior based on our skin color, ethnicity, class or culture that we can experience the season of racial equality and peace that we all hope for. Fakery is short lived but a genuine change of heart is long lasting God knows, I’ve had more than my share of life experiences, personal and as a physician, where some of the very people who appear outwardly eloquent, and outspoken pioneers of diversity and racial equality were not. Unfortunately, I have found that many who appeared fair, just and color blind silently harbored deep rooted racial biases and discriminatory beliefs. But, unless such wrong beliefs that render a race or people of color inferior, and white or lighter skinned people superior are abandoned there won’t be real peace between the races. Until our hearts truly repent and abandon these false beliefs of inferior and superior races or colors, racial equality will remain elusive, and the human race will stay in a state of cold war awaiting a trigger to ignite it. Emperor Haile Selassie (1892-1975) of Ethiopia, my mom’s birthplace, addressed the United Nations in October 6, 1963 about the risk and the ticking bomb nature of racial inequality. Excerpts of his United Nations address became the lyrics of the Reggae singer Bob Marley’s famous song “War”. “…that until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned; that until there are no longer first class and second class citizens of any nation; that until the color of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes; that until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race; that until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained...We must look first to almighty God who has raised man above the animals and endowed him with intelligence and reason We must put our faith in him that he will not desert us or permit us to destroy mankind which he created in his image…” Truly, there can’t be a season of genuine, and long lasting peace until we see each other as God’s creation; equal, beautiful, valuable, and worthy regardless of our skin color, race or ethnicity.
