NMP Evaluation
For my NMP I decided to do two live competition briefs. I thought the YCN was a great option to try out as I had worked on some live competitions before such as D & DA New Bloods Award, so my main focus was to tackle the new briefs with a unique approach by aiming to really try and pushing the boundaries like never before.
Syfy was an interesting and fun brief once you understood the concept of what it's requirements were. The brief had no limits in the type of approach one can take as the the tag line "imagine greater" can be implied and translated to almost anything. I was a little excited on how to approach the brief and I particularly wanted my brief to stand our so I decided to explore and experiment with stop motion, as this was my campaign idea which would in return utilize TV.
Further into the project, I changed my initial idea and came up with #TheTakeover. The concept was to use integrated guerrilla campaigns as a visual metaphor and use this to invade and takeover Sky products in order to catch the audience's attention, as I wanted the campaign to spark an interest.
The brief was extremely interesting because it allowed me to create captivating final outcomes which I am really pleased with. I made two final pieces, one was a motion piece that was created in a takeover style invading sky movies. The second one is a trailer to a digital product which is a high score retro arcade game called The Takeover. I think it was only right to introduce the game as it tied up all the loose ends in the brief and really pushed me forward in creating one of the best outcomes yet. At first I was using all secondary source information to manipulate and make my motion pieces as well as my guerrilla marketing but once I had created my game, I was able to create primary source materials which is always visually alluring and makes the brief it a lot more personal. Overall, I think I did really well on the game campaigns, I love some of the manipulations such as the web page takeover and twitter manipulation where I used Syfy to tweet about the game. I think I could have improved on the game design, If I had more time and was to ever do it again I would push the boundaries a little extra and really try to fit more elements in to the game design such as boss modes and create additional levels.
My next project was YCN Moo Design Works Wonders, I wanted to try another brief where subject was broad, ultimately allowing you to push your designs into as broad of a topic as one desired. Moo is an online print and design company who wants to promote awareness that ‘design works wonders’. This is their new tag line and they required striking and visually appealing graphics, which in return engages with the customer to choose Moo, and also encourage people to visit moo.com.
After reading the Moo's brief requirements, I decided it was definitely a project I wanted to explore at pushed my own graphic skills further. I chose to go in depth with the subject design and explore the word itself. In my opinion after lot's of research, I decided that design is a language of it's own right, where visuals are used to communicate to it's audience. The brief's theme inspired my work a lot and gave me the ideas of creating a motion piece inspired on blue print design which would be served as an advert and some poster designs along with a campaign. My aim was to communicate to the audience effectively and this was done by visualizing how design works by portraying some of the world’s most successful inventions and bringing them in to the graphics design world by linking both subjects. I wanted this brief to be read quite easily and and to be remembered by it's customers to get to like Moo. As a MINT, I found this brief very captivating because it allowed me to spread my skills and techniques further in addition to challenging myself to produce inspiring outcomes. After my research, I generated some iconic/illustrative ideas to aid me towards my final pieces. The inspiration for the vectors comes from the logo itself,. When I look at ‘MOO’ I just want to do something amusing with the O’s. I further developed the vectors in After Effects, keeping in mind how I can play around with O by giving them colour and life as this is one of the main themes behind the concept. Once I had created my motion piece I moved on to the poster designs, keeping the iconic theme intact. My inspiration comes from French artist Maxime Pecourt who took flat image vectors that were made up of lots of icons to make a large structure. I think everything went well in the end, the closer I got to finish the final outcomes the more agitated I got as I felt that there is always something more you can do to make the brief better. The brief had a really big potential in terms of limitless and never ending design ideas, however, according to the time I had and the idea I wanted to personally put forward in terms of the brief, I personally feel that I have put a strong message forward that ‘Design Works Wonders’. The subject is a huge provocative visual metaphor portraying two messages at the same time.
Overall I am really pleased with all the work I have produced and feel that I have kept up to the standard throughout. I managed my time effectively and I was able to handle the projects well. I have tried various different developments that are up on my blog and the final outcomes to both briefs turned a great thoughtful journey filled with some stressful and some very exciting moments which also helped shape my skills and techniques further.
A motion poster inside a train station with the ending scene taken from my motion piece
This is a preview of how the ending could look on a motion billboard
Walking in town and I seen some fascination motion billboards. After catching my attention I thought it would be a good idea look in to these for Moo and try to create some motion billboards, I can see each slide isn't really long so prehaps I can get the ending scene from my motion piece on billboards to raise awareness as well as celebrating that design works Wonders. I've been seeing these motion billboards quite a lot recently I think these definately work as a great promotional tool
Here are the three posters in a train station. I think even though the posters are vector based in a new sleek design they work anywhere, for example this old train station looks like it has something substantial, the colours draw your attention straight away
Here is one of the posters displayed on a bus stop, I think it works well sepreately and definitely very eye catchy
Here is a little look how the posters would look on a wall
Here are my final posters for the Design Works Wonders campaign. So taking my inspiration from flat image vectors that were made up of lots of icons to make a large structure I decided to create my own, these have turned beautiful, out of the three my personal favourite Is the ‘Moo Works’ poster. I just love the colour scheme and how they flow well together. All the colours have been used from the moo colour palette and the combination of colours have been experimented before they were selected. I also used the same vectors as my motion piece so the audience is familiar with the new slogan brand. I decided I will only create three captivating posters each one representing the tag line, they have been designed well to work together as a trio as well as separately.
Here are some compelling posters by French artist Maxime Pecourt. I really like the idea of using various vectors to create one image, and the colour scheme isn't complicated so to me it ‘works wonders’. I am very inspired by this approach and would like to to create my posters for moo in a similar manner to aid me in my awareness campaign
Placement Industry Work
So I had my first practical experience in the graphic design industry today at Manchester's motion based Soup Studios. I experimented with a lot of video editing In Final Cut pro which was overelly fascinating I gained a lot of new skills and techniques. Today we was looking at creating a trailer on a project which I'm not really allowed to talk as it is not yet announced publicly. What I can say is that it was very thought provoking and an academic achievement personally, I managed to work around some areas on the project playing around with Key Wording which is a tool that allows you to collect all your personal footage to edit in the timeline. This was great experience In a work environment setting new challenges and boundaries, what I liked was the fact I could ask questions and work with people who work as motion designers, They gave me good and personal insight into what the job entails and what has been developing in the industry. I look forward to returning next week so I can be able to achieve more experiences and pick up more industry type knowledge
Okay so here it is, the final outcome. After doing more research on the contents of ‘design’ I thought I will give it more of a blue print effect as this would not only be affiliated to the subject but just as visually captivating.
Okay so here is the sounds track in sync with the visuals as well as the sound effects, everything seems smooth but I wasn’t fully satasfied with the outcome in terms of concept, I think it worked well but definately needed re-visiting, I am thinking of giving it more of a design based feel even though the colour droplets towards the end represents each design I still don't think this is a strong concept in terms off defining design as this is the main visual metaphor I intend to emphasise.
Here is an aftermath version of my motion piece with all the designs in their full affect, as for now I am looking for a sound track to go along with the visuals to complete the result
Here is a clip of my ending scene, I made various attempts at getting the right ending scene as I wanted it to link into my designs. Each coloured drop indicates the six designs that were carried out as these were the key factors in the motion piece, once the six drops reveal themselves that’s when the slogan “Design Works Wonders” appears following straight after the web site. I really wanted to emphasise the fact that design works in a captivating visual metaphor and I believe in this scene I have executed it well which was very crucial
Here is a developed version of the motion piece. As you can see the plan is working accordingly which will allow me to further progress with the rest of the illustrations in the same process, I really like the outcomes of the motion in the vector designs. My personal favourite will have to be the turbines I think the O’s and the turbines inside are engineered exquisitely, the colour blue and the white works wonders together giving the whole outcome an captivating effect
