Botswana Internet! Can only stream 3 seconds of Facebook videos. But wait- doesn't the country have 2 fibre optic cables? It makes no sense how KENYA, with the fastest internet in Africa (faster then Sweden even), has one fibre optic cable. By the way, Kenya has 44.5million people. One can stream 4K videos. Botswana should really have the fastest internet speeds. How can we then harness our potential to use technology when internet speeds are this pathetic for a country with 2.1million people? Innovation needs tools. Fast reliable internet is one of those tools. With Botswana hoping to attract FDI, and the moving of Diamond polishing to the country, the high fliers who the diamond trade bring to Gaborone needs super fast internet and general service. Botswana has missed several Oppotunities that came with the failure of Zimbabwe, in technology, power generation, tourism(we should be the Dubai of Africa- Kenya's economy was build on tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and human capital) Becoming a financial hub like Mauritius is another option and opportunity that can be harnessed. A small population is advantageous. Human capital needs to be able to flow freely to fill in the gap where Batswana have no expertise. I am just making an informed observation. We as a country need to learn from the mistakes made by our neighbors, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Angola and even Congo Dr. Emerging countries like Rwanda, Mauritius, Angola itself, To some extent, Namibia can teach is some lessons. #Reflections #Gaborone #Botswana (at Kgale View)
