Hawks, at first glance, seems to be an easy-going and carefree guy who doesn’t quite fit in with typical societal norms. More likely to scoff at formalities, Hawks is quick to recognize other people’s subtleties while seemingly none-the-wiser. He pretends to act his age, young and aloof, but is very observant and always alert. Sometimes, he purposefully shows his expressions that could be considered quite rude and isn’t afraid to do so as part of his “act” as a young man with a carefree attitude.
However, he is still a Hero and considers the people important, above all else, and wants to help them. Understanding the nuanced complexities that come with society and their need for a “Symbol of Peace,” Hawks will do what he feels is necessary for the people to look up to. This makes him do things that people can often considerable, questionable, at best, and commit to the responsibilities he signs up for, even if the backlash could be possibly horrendous in the long-run.
Hawks is capable of completely controlling his expressions and body motions with the purpose that it makes him both an excellent liar and dangerous spy. His expertise in being able to deceive even the most observant says a lot for his skill and his need and requirements of engaging in espionage. Meticulous and hardworking, despite all of that, Hawks doesn’t like working undercover or putting himself under this sort of strain for long, even if it’s for the sake of the future.
Under all of that aloofness and practiced joviality that makes him seem otherwise, Hawks is a good man. He doesn’t want others to sacrifice themselves for his sake or have people hurt themselves for the sake of a “ mission.” Always wanting to be useful, he’d rather people find him useful or helpful and his desire to do so propels him to work as a hero. In spite of his origins and the lack of love he otherwise had as a child, Hawks wanted to help people in any way he could.
Romantically, Hawks has never truly fallen in love or experienced anything that falls in line with romance. In this, he is neither actively looking nor wanting a relationship. If he does find a partner, he is flexible and very much on the receiving end of learning about his partners and is the type to grow with his partner in the relationship. He will and can be a little naïve in a relationship, but he understands flexibility and compromise are important. He loves with all he’s got and is the type to be in-denial of the feelings he has if he does fall in love with anyone. Hawks is romantic and can be almost childish, wanting to indulge and often craving the physical affections that come from his partner.

A special mutation of his quirk is the red wings, made up of red feathers, on his back that gives him the power of flight, speed, and bears the strength of being able to lift up a single individual per feather.
When a feather is detached, they’re controlled and perform individual tasks as each feather shares a telepathic connection to Hawks. Each feather is also of varying sizes, adapting to specific tasks; whether it’s for combat with strength or for cutting. They can also pick up vibrations that can be interpreted to feel for people and objects, acting as sensors. However, the further away he is to the feather, the less sensitive the “sensor” of the feather works.

IMPORTANT: This section only covers up to the change in ranks of Heroes in My Hero Academia and from this point on, primarily follows the story of My Hero Academia and the Endeavor Agency Arc ( currently at the point of the anime—as of 07/31/2021 ). Please be warned that his history below will contain HEAVY SPOILERS for the current timeline of where the anime is at.
TRIGGERS: verbal/mental and physical abuse of a child, violence, weaponization of a child, psychological manipulation.
Hawks was originally a child named Keigo Tamaki, born to a criminal father and a mother who lacked proper societal skills to properly work. His father was a petty thief, stealing without considering the repercussions of his thefts. It’s around this time when he was hiding from the law that he finds Tomie and she hides him from the law while he was on the run. And thus, Keigo was born.
Neither of his parents had his Quirk when he was born so he had no aid as he was growing up to learn how to use them properly. His father feared being discovered by the authorities and verbally abused Keigo whenever he talked back to him. Keigo’s only source of education at the time was the television his parents had and it’s through that he feels a lot of things are fictional. Neither of his parents were educated and his father took out his frustrations of how useless Keigo was and beat him whenever he did anything “wrong.” It was a loveless home as both of his parents blamed him for being born and essentially just a waste of space. His mother was kind enough only to the extent of feeding and caring for him, but it lacked the warmth a typical mother would have.
When he was around 5 or so years old, his wings felt oddly tingly when he left the home for the first time. He returned home when he found that the tingly sensation was nothing. His father beat him in fear and anger, scolding him for leaving and questioning him if Keigo gave his father up, despite his insistence that he had not. At this point, Keigo stifled his emotions and desires and hoped that he would never become his parents, recognizing the differences between what was shown on tv and what his life was like.
Shortly after, his father was caught and arrested by Endeavor. For a child who only knew of heroes through the television, he thought that they were just fantasy come to life on television and was shocked to find that they were real. It was like a dream come true, especially since the hero that arrested his father was none other than the same plushie that he carried. It was the only personal item that he was given and allowed to have. However, since his father’s arrest, his mother feared being arrested for harboring a criminal and that same day, forced them to leave their home and live out on the streets.
Because his mother lacked the skills necessary to function in society to obtain and hold a job, the streets were what all Keigo knew for a while. Despite the fact that Keigo suggested they should go to the police, his mother ignored the suggestion and instead berated him, repeating why she even had him if he was useless. This continues when she harps on his wings and what they were for and Keigo felt determined to prove her wrong that he wasn’t useless. It was almost as if fate gave him a hand because a horrendous car accident was happening that Keigo reacted, saving every single person from the dangerous scene that would’ve cost the lives of everyone involved.
This led to the public discovering that the young boy was their savior and brought the eye of the Hero Public Safety Commission. With compensation and protection in exchange for Keigo and his mother abandoning the “Takami” name, Keigo was separated from his mother to begin his training as a hero. Keigo went even the next step and “abandoned” his name altogether, wanting to severe the connection he had to his father on his path to becoming a hero. Essentially militarized from a young age and manipulated by the Commission, Keigo was trained in interpersonal, social, and other skills that would eventually lead to his skills as a spy, a master of deception and infiltration. This was all accepted so that he would become like his idol, Endeavor. No matter what the Commission said, taught, drilled into him, or how he suffered in his years of training, he learned for the sake of becoming a “hero.”
With a handle of his Quirk, he opened his own hero agency around 18. Around six months later after its establishment, Keigo—now named Hawks—climbed the Pro Hero rankings of Japan to its top ten, making him the first to reach the top ten before 20. Four years later, Hawks reached the No. 3 Pro Hero Rank by the age of 23, standing right behind All Might and Endeavor. While it was with ease that he reached his rank without trying, he was never interested in being anything higher than what he was doing because all he wanted to do was support Endeavor, his idol.
