you actually cannot convince me that the reason the tenth doctor was so aggy with martha in the sontaran two parter, and veered between braggy and contrite with donna regarding what actually happened with martha in 'partners in crime' wasn't because he thought martha would eventually come back, and was upset that she'd moved on.
when martha left, tossed him the phone, said she'd see him again...i think the doctor since then was simply waiting. waiting for the call. not to see her again but for her to call and ask to come back.
why he is so aggravated in that sontaran story when martha hasn't called to do that, simply for his help. i know that line about them needing an expert is played for laughs when he doesn't realise they meant him, but i can totally see that adding into the idea that the doctor has no idea what he's actually doing at unit. again, he's waiting for martha to come out and say it.
which adds perfectly into that scene where he gets at her about the protocols at unit which martha points out doesn't make sense as the doctor got her the job in the first place. the doctor thinks martha just needs a break, and that break can kill two birds with one stone for him - one, it provides her the distance she needs but also can straighten out unit under the watchful and wise eyes of martha jones. once it's all done and dusted, she's ready to go...only until of course, he realises that martha hasn't called to come back at all. in fact she's engaged now.
i really love the consensus that the doctor is waiting for martha to call for him back. watching him make an ass out of himself is fascinating to say the least
