FF7 Remake ~ Translation Matters (19) - âYou canât fall in love with meâ and all the 性ćâs in the world.
We originally watched the Tifa cut-scene (when they hug in the garden) so I was very pleasantly surprised when the youtube video Iâve been watching for Japanese audio played the Aerith cut-scene. It was SOOOOO beautiful and sad and the music was amazing. Iâm happy to finally watch it but oh god, the whole thing is heart breaking. ThoughâŠsome nitpicky crap, of course.Â
Aerithâs speech begins, âEveryone dies eventually. So we need to make the most of the time we have - to live our lives the way we wanna live.â Then she saysâŠ

Comment: Japanese Aerith actually makes a point to specify THIS moment and not the generic âevery minute, every moment.â THIS very moment when the two of them are together. Cloud echoes this statement so let them agree that this very goddamn moment is precious! They repeat the key 性ćă«, which Iâll talk about below. Â

Comment:Â Â Cloud has a screwed up mind where he hallucinates a dead man following him, has false memories and identity, and is having this strange dream that may not be just a dream where he is told that his feelings (while they may be truly felt) are also âjust his imagination.â It fits better and still gives some credence to Cloudâs feelings.
æ° is one of those culturally specific words that crop up in a hundred different phrases. I wonder if it is the Japanese equivalent of Chinese âchiâ? Basically, you can clump it under mind, heart, feeling, mood, etc. Kind of like the energy of the world. I donât mean this in a woo woo sense because it is used in all kinds of normal, everyday expressions and words. Like æ°æ㥠(feeling) is literally âholding a ki.â Â

Comment:Â I have no idea why they changed Aerithâs words so much here. The emotion behind it is totally emptied out!Â
Really quick though. It is interesting to see the same word 性ć (important, precious, critical) be translated different ways depending on the context. When Sepia-world little Aerith tells Elmyra that her ćăȘäșș has died, it is translated as a âman you really, really love.âÂ
When flash-back-never-aging Tseng pops up at the door to remind Aerith that she is a 性ćăȘ child, it is translated as âyouâre not just any little girlâ (aka you are special). So when Aerith first asked Cloud if Tifa wasnât an important person to him (性ćăȘäșșïŒcovered briefly here, your fanon can re-translate that as âTifa is someone who is really, really lovedâ or Tifa isnât âjust any little girl.â When Cloud tells Aerith that he will indeed treat this dream moment as 性ćă«, your fanon can re-translate that as you desire too. Â
