i will be posting the first three chapters of admin dept travelogue soon!
normally i like posting events in full in one go but doing it like this will discipline me a bit more to actually try to work on it. plus, they have been almost done for a while now save for a few phrases.
sorry, school is more intense than last time & i have been getting sick a lot o(-( i have also looked into potential ways to obtain a transcription of the event raws to speed things up but i think it's not a possibility sadly.
i feel bad for saying "translations soon" each time but living is hard sometimes :') & i also value the works i translate for and want to give it enough time and respect it deserves... so it just ends up a mess of not achieving anything rip
i am doing better health wise but also i have moved back to japan with the goal to potentially find work as a TLer here after i'm done w my 1 yr of school.
its been roughly 2 weeks but it's been going well. but just saying TLs will be picking up and posted at a more frequent pace than before! i'm excited to get back to it (but also its my way of extra studying for the JLPT, LMAO). sorry for all these delays but stuff r looking up a little finally, yay.

Fun fact: When slicing apples, it’s possible to soak them in salt water to preserve their freshness for longer.
Striked out words are replacement for furigana (ex. a word says "X" but in small text above it, there's an other word "Y")
Consuming “the achievements of others” as a substitute for “your own achievements”. That’s the kind of content we’re dealing with.
Talent. Looks. Circumstances.
It’s a given that those (me) who won their gacha rolls find success in life.
It’s a given to place expectations on others, to envy when they succeed, and to turn your back when they disappoint.
“Lucky you”
Whether you deny or admit, whether you try hard or not, it’s the same.
That’s why, I just wanna breathe.
Taiga: …Got it. You better eat…
Taiga: —Haruhi. Wake up.
The pencil hovering above the paper slipped a bit out of my hand, drawing an unnecessary line at suddenly being spoken to out of nowhere. Thinking how he was being loud as usual, I turned myself towards Taiga.
Haruhi: What, talking to me? I’m awake.
Taiga: Then answer me if you are. Did you get everything?
Haruhi: Nope.
Taiga: Good grief… As I said this morning, I’m going out for a bit. And I’ll be back by evening.
Haruhi: Ah. GLHF.
Taiga: Since Sei-san also went out to renew his license, I put your portion for lunch in the fridge already. Make sure to eat it.
Haruhi: Mh.
Taiga: Also, drink your tea. You left your cup just sitting there from when I poured some for you this morning.
Haruhi: Ngh……
Taiga: … C’mere…
—Whap!
Haruhi: Huh? What,
Taiga: Quiet. And don’t move.
The hand that gave my brow a good slap was touching my neck now. With brows still furrowed, Taiga let out a sigh.
Taiga: Knew it, you’re running a fever.
Haruhi: Huh? No way.
Taiga: You are. Just not that high yet. Y'know, it was weighing on my mind how you ate even less than usual this morning.
Taiga: As for medicine… we can wait with that. Either way, go lay down first.
Haruhi: Can’t. Doing work here. Deadline’s close.
Taiga: When is it?
Haruhi: Week after next, but gotta get it done today or I’m toast. There’s a new game coming out at midnight on Thursday, so wanna work right until I gotta do all the finishing touches.
Taiga: If you can progress far enough to get close to being done within 4 days, then you’ll have enough leeway to meet the deadline even with taking today off. And you’ll be able to game at ease after wrapping up your work.
Haruhi: No way, dude. How many years do you think I’ve been waiting since the last one?
Taiga: Which makes it even more important that you’re in good shape to enjoy it to the fullest, no? You’ll end up bedridden if you keep pushing yourself to get it done. Rest up before you get to that point.
Haruhi: I’m not that weak.
Taiga: I’ll pick you up and move you by force. And if you don’t like the sound of that, get moving yourself.
Haruhi: Dude… whatever…
Haruhi: Okoge. Taiga’s annoying me so I’m gonna sleep.
Okoge: …?
Okoge, who was curled up in the middle of my bed, woke up and sluggishly moved to settle down in its usual spot while still half asleep.
I crawled in bed myself after lightly stroking its back, and as soon as I laid down, I felt a dizzy sensation overtaking me, and grimaced reflexively.
Haruhu: (…Sigh. Seriously, s’not like I didn’t get it.)
The moment my body recognized the feeling, I silently took several breaths as an attempt to get through the sudden wave of nausea.
Taiga: Gotta go to the toilet?
Haruhi: ‘m fine. Not that bad.
Taiga: Gotcha.
While picking up the glass of barley tea that I barely drank from, Taiga started to clean up my room a little, and picked up a sketch I was working on.
Taiga: Not often that you draw traditionally, huh. You usually use your tablet when thinking about design stuff, right?
Haruhi: It’s a rough draft. Got asked to do oil painting on a canvas time around.
Taiga: Eh. You also know how to do that stuff? That’s impressive… Did you go to some kinda art class?
Haruhi: As if. Did it as club activity at school.
Taiga: Ah, I see. So you actually attended one, huh?
Taiga: That’s nice. There’s gotta be tournaments for art stuff too, right. Or rather, competition is a better word for that? I think?
Haruhi: Aaah… sure. Think they had that kinda stuff, yeah.
Haruhi: Never put that much effort into it, so didn’t get that far.
Taiga: If you don’t do it properly, you won’t obtain the necessary skills that you could use for work.
Haruhi: …They just asked for “something that looks like it”, so I took on the job. Nothing that impressive regarding skills and all,
Haruhi: Anyways, can I sleep now? I’m more or less a sickly individual, after all.
Taiga: …Yeah.
Taiga: I’ll leave your phone here. Don’t fiddle with it, whether it’s for gaming or whatever, and just patiently rest up.
Taiga: Call me over if there’s anything.
Haruhi: …Call him over, he says. When he’s gonna be out.
Haruhu: (Seriously, can’t believe this guy. We’re not family yet he goes that much out of his way for others— ....)
Haruhi: ……
Haruhi: (...Sigh. This… is worse than I thought today, huh.)
“Once your condition deteriorates beyond a certain point, you become excessively cynical.”
I’m fed up to hell and back with this persistent, annoying "specification".
When it gets to that point, I can’t stop myself from saying unnecessary things— the kind of words that are better left unsaid, rather than the ones that made no difference whether they were said or not.
Haruhi: (...Didn’t sleep yesterday, and I’m feeling drowsy. I’ll sleep.)
I closed my eyes. But I felt my vision spinning around in the darkness, and the nausea returned.
I breathed in and out, trying to drive away the discomfort. Despite being drowsy, I couldn't sleep.
Haruhi: …Stupid debuff…
I gave up and opened my eyes, and looked straight ahead of me.
When I caught the art supply store bag in the corner of my eye, my brain recognized the canvas within it, and memories came surfacing back on their own.
Haruhi: ……
Located on the end of the ground floor of the school building, an art classroom that felt cool from the lack of sunlight pouring in.
The unique smell of art supplies and dust.
And unnecessary words that spilled out.
“Why, why am I… I do this much, and yet…”
“You’re not serious, you don’t put any effort into it, so why are you the one making these kinds of paintings!”
Haruhi: …Would it satisfy you if I quit drawing?
“...Wha…? What, are you…”
Haruhi: It’s the same if I did or didn’t. These paintings made by someone who isn’t “serious”, and isn’t putting “any effort” into these.
Haruhi: The only one calling it quits here is you, yourself. So could you please not use me as a reason for that?
“…Use, as a reason…?”
Haruhi: You do your best, and I do even less than that. So? What about it?
Haruhi: You’re the one that’s all like “gotta do my best until I’m satisfied with myself”, yeah?
Haruhi: Don’t put the blame on others.
That day, too, I wasn’t feeling well since morning.
I have thought time and time again how I shouldn’t have gone that far, but no matter how many times I run this scenario through my mind again, the me from back then ends up spilling out everything anyway—
The outcome of having said that won’t change.
Taiga: ……Haruhi.
Haruhi: …What?
Taiga: Are you able to sleep?
Haruhi: Nah… Still awake.
Taiga: Brought some water. And warmed it up just in case.
Taiga: Also these— I sliced some apples for you.
Haruhi: You my ma or something…
Taiga: If you can’t eat them right now, I’ll go put them in the fridge.
Haruhi: I’ll take a slice. And then you can take ‘em away.
Taiga: Don’t eat while laying down.
Haruhi: It’s a pain to get up just to eat one slice.
Taiga: Geez, it’s bad for your digestion… I’m leaving towels, cooling patches and a change of clothes over here, so you can try to change if you end up getting sweaty.
Haruhi: Yeah yeah, thanks, no need to go that far… Anyway, weren’t you gonna leave? Hurry up and go already.
Taiga: Ah, ‘bout that. I changed my mind.
Haruhi: You did?
Taiga: Wasn’t anything serious, just planned on seeing a movie on my own. So I can stay home.
Haruhi: Wha…? Man, you really don’t need to go that far.
Taiga: It’s not like I absolutely had to go see it today.
Haruhi: Liar. I know you wanted to but just couldn’t find the right timing for it, and how excited you were to finally be able to see it today. Leave me be and get going.
Taiga: Even if I do leave you behind while you’re feeling unwell, I’d just worry and I wouldn’t be able to concentrate.
Haruhi: Dude, ’m fine, go see it if you wanna.
Haruhi: I hate having my health, or taking care of me or whatever, being used as some kind of reason for why you can’t do something for yourself.
Haruhi: And I never asked you to go that far for me, either.
Haruhi: (…Ah.)
I said something I shouldn’t have.
The moment I realized that, our eyes met.
Haruhi: (Aaah, damnit… I freaking told you so… No, I mean, I didn’t, but—)
Haruhi: (Also, like, if you tell me you’re leaving then just do it, and if you tell me to sleep then lemme sleep. Don’t go slicing apples for me either.)
Taiga: …….
Haruhi: .....Forget it. I’m seriously feeling bad so leave me alone, I’ll apologize after.
He didn’t seem to be mad, nor hurt.
But he wasn’t smiling either.
I weirdly couldn’t tell what he was thinking, so in order to escape from Taiga’s silent gaze, I pulled my blanket all the way over my head and turned my back towards him.
All I wanted was for him to drop a word of confirmation and leave, no matter what was on his mind.
Taiga: …Geez.
Taiga: —What am I gonna do with you?
A familiar tone of voice— the kind that you could hear what expression he was making, even without needing to look at his face.
As he said that with a laugh, Taiga softly tapped my head through the blanket.
Taiga: You’re the one that’s feeling bad here, and yet you’re fussing over me? Dumbass.
Haruhi: ……
Taiga: I’m not going anywhere anymore today. Even if you beg me to, I’ll refuse. I’m staying home because I want to. And that’s it.
Taiga: That’s why, don’t overthink and go to sleep.
Haruhi: ……
Taiga: Well, if you feel like taking out your frustrations on someone again, call me over. I’ll turn the tables on you.
Haruhi: …Don’t start picking fights with someone that’s sick.
Taiga: How ‘bout I go whip up some porridge, seeing you’re healthy enough to talk back at me that much.
Haruhi: No need to bring ‘em out right after the other. I’ll eat my apple slices.
Taiga: Need me to grate these?
Haruhi: Dude. I, like, still have teeth I can chew with, just get outta here already.
Haruhi: I’ll give a shout if there’s anything.
Taiga: Yeah. Do that.
Haruhi: …Seriously, can’t believe this guy at all.
I grabbed a slice from the place without getting up, but somehow found myself sitting up when I took a bite.
They were still chilly, and when I felt a vague taste of salt water on my tongue—
I involuntarily let out a laugh, which was then followed by silence.

Part 1
Taiga: (Wonder what I should make for dinner today.)
I pondered about that while walking around in the fruit section.
Then I ended up stopping in front of a shelf displaying seasonal fruits such as persimmon and pomegranates, as well as a variety of other fruits you’d find throughout the year.
Taiga: (Apples and whatnot— all sorta fruits you can buy regardless if they’re in season or not nowadays.)
Observing the shelf while thinking about how much effort farmers put into this stuff, a certain fruit caught my attention.
Taiga: Cherries, huh.
Taiga: (Those are nice. But maybe I oughta go for something more in season—)
Taiga: (...Actually, that reminds me.)
Suddenly, from the depths of my mind, the image of a lively dinner table from god knows when flashed before my eyes.
Taiga: (Brought ‘em out for these guys before, didn’t I. Ate them all up while going on how yummy it was.)
Taiga: (That said, don’t think they’d eat ‘em if they had to prepare it themselves. Wonder if they even get the chance to eat something like this nowadays…)
Taiga: (Nah, it’s none of my business to mull over it.)
I gently shook my head and reached out for the cherries on the shelf.
???: You there, hold it!
Taiga: !
Taiga: …Are you, talking to me?
Taiga: Got any room left? I received it as a gift so, wanna take a small bite?
I brought out the refrigerated cherries after dinner, and Haruhi turned towards me with a curious look on his face.
Haruhi: Huuuh, from who?
Taiga: Someone from around the neighborhood. An elderly lady.
Haruhi: The heck, what she got to do with you?
Taiga: She called out to me when I was picking out fruits at the supermarket.
“My husband’s receiving a great deal of fruits as get-well gifts while he’s hospitalized, so if you’re planning on getting cherries then I got you covered.”
“I keep handing ‘em out here and there but I just can’t get rid of it all, and every time someone drops by it just keeps piling up, it’s putting me quite the bind.”
Taiga: …Seems to be the case. I gratefully accepted it.
Haruhi: Isn’t gramps, like, way too popular?
Taiga: Yep, he’s held in pretty high regard.
Then a door opened, and Sei-san, who quickly returned to his own room after dinner, poked his head out.
Sei: Oh my, such a bittersweet lovely fragrance in the air.
Taiga: Sei-san, are you done with work?
Sei: Yes, I’ve reached a point where I can take a breather.
Taiga: Then how about we eat this together with everyone here. I received these today.
Sei: I’d be most delighted to. From whom was it?
Taiga: Y’see…
Sei: My goodness. What a wonderful twist of fate.
Sei: That being said, it’s quite unheard of for Taiga to accept such an offer.
Part 2
Haruhi: For real. Even though he’s the type to refuse even if it kills him.
Sei: Fufu, I’d simply say he’s modest.
Taiga: Right… I admit, I wanted to politely decline at first.
Taiga: But… she was seriously— and I can’t emphasize this enough— seriously persistent.
Haruhi: So, this OP granny annihilated you and you got these from her. Yup, I can already imagine it.
Haruhi: A flustered Taiga fighting for his life in front of this lil’ granny that’s half the size of him.
Taiga: Just throwing it out there, but you definitely won’t stand a chance against her. She’s relentless, no joke.
Haruhi: I’m different from you, ‘cuz my special ability is skillfully turning down others with kindness.
Taiga: Is that something to brag about?
Taiga: (But genuinely, she was damn forceful with it…)
Old lady: So, was thinking of keeping the melon for my grandchildren. But you can take everything else! The mangoes are great, lemme tell ya.
Taiga: Still, this much is—
Taiga: (I couldn’t refuse and even ended up getting dragged till her house, but handing me a paulownia box full of stuff just like that, I can’t…!)
Taiga: At least let me repay you in some way.
Old lady: What are you saying, young man! I told you I’m handing these out since I don’t need ‘em!
Taiga: M-my apologies.
Old lady: It won’t fit in this shopping bag. Lemme bring out a bigger one.
Taiga: T-then! The cherries! I will gladly take just the cherries off your hands….!
Old lady: But you live with the three of you, don’t you wanna eat more than that?
Taiga: No, it’s okay, it’s the thought that counts!
Old lady: Really now…? Alright then.
Taiga: (Thank god…)
Old lady: Do you usually cook for everyone?
Taiga: Eh. Uh, yes, yes I do.
Old lady: Hm, I see. Now that’s love.
Taiga: Uh……?
Old lady: You see, if you don’t have any fruit lying around, then that’s just how it is. Besides, if you want to enjoy eating these, you have to wash and peel— stuff you gotta go out of your way for.
Taiga: ……
Old lady: So, taking the trouble to go buy fruit and then feed ‘em some, lemme tell ya, it’s rooted in love.
Old lady: It shows how close you all are.
Taiga: (Love, huh.)
Haruhi: Mh, these are sweeter than the ones we had before.
Sei: This hard fruit has a fragrant sweetness, and the balance of the sourness is magnificent. I can’t help myself but reach for more each time.
Sei: Taiga, too, please savor some before I devour everything myself.
I know he’s not the kinda guy to do that, but with a usual smile that I don’t know what’s hiding behind, Sei-san pushed the plate towards me.
Taiga: Yeah, thanks.
Taiga: These are… delicious.
Savoring the juices of the fruit overflowing in my mouth, a thought pops up in my head.
Taiga: (I’m enjoying this time together.)
Taiga: (It’s at that lady said, it might be something you can live without in your daily life, but—)
Taiga: Guess I’ll buy some fruits again next time.
Part 3
A few days after that, autumn was in full swing. On the way home, red leaves that had been carried by the wind from somewhere fell on my shoulder.
Taiga: (I’ll clean ‘em up later. First I gotta put this away.)
I picked up this heavy plastic bag with somewhat large pears in it and opened the fridge.
Taiga: Huh? This is—
Several figs that weren’t there this morning were scattered about as is. I unconsciously tilted my head in confusion, and heard footsteps coming down the stairs.
Haruhi: Ah, these. I put ‘em in.
Taiga: You did?
Haruhi: Yup. Got ‘em as a gift. Just a guess, but I probs encountered the same OP granny you ran into before.
Haruhi slipped through my arms and grabbed a gaudy plastic bottle from the open fridge.
Haruhi: Went to the supermarket to look for this, and while I was looking around at fruits, I got suddenly called out to.
Haruhi: TL;DR, “Can’t finish these up so take ‘em off my hands”. She was talking to me but I just couldn’t get a word in, so I did as she told me and brought ‘em bake home.
Taiga: Haha, I can imagine it. It was probably her again, I think.
Taiga: Told ya, no way you’d win against her tenacity.
Haruhi: That granny, said her piece, shoved these in my hands, went all like “Got plans so gotta bounce!”. She totally wasn’t letting me speak on purpose.
Taiga: Really? I was able to talk with her a little…
Taiga: Maybe she knows you’re the kind of guy that’s ready to fire off comebacks and end up declining her the moment you open your mouth.
Haruhi: Changing her strats depending on her opponent? She’s way too OP, dude, like, is she some kinda seasoned warrior, or what?
Taiga: Without a doubt that she seemed used to it, but… you’re exaggerating it.
I rolled my eyes, and put the figs together with the pears in the same bag, and closed the fridge.
Haruhi: Anyways, we got even more fruit now. Is that also from the notorious granny?
Taiga: These are from clients at Aporia. It was given as a gift, and since there were plenty, I took a bunch of them back home.
Haruhi: Good thing I didn’t end up mindlessly buying whatever, then.
Taiga: Buying whatever? …Actually, why were you in the fruits isle—
Sei: I’m back home. Oh my, you're both here.
Saying that, Sei-san entered the living room while holding a paper bag.
Taiga: Welcome back. What’s with the bag?
Sei: I went to the department store to take care of something, yet I found myself tempted by an aroma.
Sei: If you’d all like to, how about eating these together tonight?
Taiga: And these are… some good-looking grapes.
Haruhi: We opening a fruit stall or what?
I almost found myself laughing at Haruhi’s remark, but then I remembered the elderly lady’s voice full of endorsement, and I kept my mouth shut.
Taiga: (“It’s rooted in love.”)
Taiga: (...I can’t selfishly assume their feelings, neither do I intend to.)
Taiga: (But as for me, I just think spending time like this after dinner isn’t bad at all.)
And looking at it now, that’s how things turned out to be. I wonder, was it the same for them? —Again, I am not under the belief that it’s exactly like that. But, if it was, it would make me happy.
Taiga: (At any rate, these days of us three being surrounded by fruits is gonna keep going for a while.)
I was supposed to hold it back, but I couldn’t stop my face from subconsciously lighting up.
Haruhi and Sei-san pointed it out, and teased me with a smile of their own.
[Break My Case] SSR Card Story - Soyogu Shinkai "Soyogu’s special day"
Translation by akewanchan.
Source is mobile game Break My Case.
Part 1
Soyogu: Don’t mind me.
Haruhi: Go ahead.
Instead of Sei-san, who was still in an ongoing meeting, or Taiga-san, it was Ichikawa who came out to greet me.
Ichikawa wasted no time claiming his spot on the sofa again, with his gaze falling back on the TV displaying a pause screen.
Soyogu: M’bad but gonna wait here for a sec until Sei-san’s back.
Haruhi: Mh.
He listlessly replied, without sparing a glance at me also taking a seat, and resumed his game.
Soyogu: (...Gamers operate on a whole different level when it comes to pressing buttons, don’t they.)
Trivial thoughts take up my mind as I sit there at ease, while time passes by without any conversation— which I don't got anything to say about.
Well, that's just how it goes with Ichikawa.
Soyogu: —Ah. Right, remember Hayashi, this guy who was in our class during middle school.
Soyogu: He contacted me recently, said he’s getting married soon.
Haruhi: Oh, cool.
Haruhi: So who was he again?
Soyugu: You don’t actually remember him, huh. Didn’t anyone reach out to you?
Haruhi: From my POV, you're the only one that's not the default option given I still talk to you.
Haruhi: That kinda stuff is just whatever to me.
Soyogu: Yeah, you seem the kinda guy to say that, huh.
Haruhi: I mean, I already did.
At the same time, I do think of him as the type to pick up without frowning 'bout it, if he were to get contacted for some reason or another.
Soyugu: (Can’t imagine Ichikawa being the one to ring you up, though…)
Soyogu: (Putting it like that, s'kinda a feat in itself that I can sit here and talk with him, no big deal. Never thought that'd ever happen back then.)
He's a co-worker I see on the regular, but it's not like we have something else going on besides that.
And if I had to describe what relationship we have, I'd say it's one of former middle school classmates.
Soyogu: (And it's not like that makes us best of pals, either.)
Could say some mysterious force brought us together for this reunion and easily wrap it up there, but if you asked me to elaborate, I fear an answer would elude me.
Soyogu: Oooh, that was a crazy move you pulled. How come ya hit 'em by shooting from such a distance?
Haruhi: 'Cuz I was aiming, duh.
Soyogu: So, that attack's unavoidable, huh. Damn dude.
Haruhi: Quit with the live commentary. Can’t focus.
Haruhi: Actually, wanna give it a shot?
Soyogu: Huh?
Part 2
Soyugu: Can’t say I’ve played this game before.
Haruhi: You'll get the hang of it while you play. But, you're the kinda dude to pull it off immediately, so.
Haruhi: Let's see, Merikart… nah, actually we'll do this instead. A so-called party game.
He naturally handed a controller over to me.
On the screen Ichikawa was clicking through, I could see that there already was an account named "Soyogu", and I couldn't help but laugh a little, without saying a word.
Soyogu: Just so you know, ain’t planning on losing.
Haruhi: Playing until you win is off the table.
Haruhi: I’ll toggle CPUs ‘cuz it’s better to have more players. Which difficulty level you want?
Soyogu: Gotta pick one, huh? Then you obviously gotta go with the hardest of ‘em all.
Soyogu: But I’ll totally kick their asses.
Haruhi: Yeah, yeah. Also like, FYI, it’s just some chill cozy party game.
Soyogu: Awright! That was flawless just now.
In addition to the board game itself progressing, mini-games pop up every now and then.
I was randomly chosen to be on Ichikawa's team and we won against the CPU by a landslide.
Haruhi: On the contrary, amazing how you can get that fired up now.
Soyogu: On the contrary or whatever, if you're gonna do something, then you gotta put all you got in ya.
Haruhi: Uwah…
Soyogu: What’s with that reaction?
Haruhi: Suddenly remembered something from way back in middle school during PE, which threw me off a little.
Soyogu: PE… what made you think that far back?
Haruhi: It was during volleyball. I remember watching your intense spikes from the sidelines of the court, thinking no matter what happens, I never want to go up against that kinda guy.
Haruhi: Also, how you were too much to handle for your teammates too.
Soyogu: Now you're being unreasonable. Ain't just that all you know from sitting out all the time?
Haruhi: No but like, for real. It was crazy how team morale would boost just from your presence alone. It was like a sports drama suddenly unfolding before me.
Haruhi: There's this mini-game, where it's described as teamwork but in essence it's just solo competition, making it a whole different thing.
Haruhi: But volleyball's a team sport no matter how you wanna put it. I pleaded to get spared from getting inevitably swallowed up in all of it.
Soyogu: Well, if I'm gonna be at it, might as well win, y'know.
Haruhi: Dude, haven't you like, not changed at all from back then?
Soyogu: Don't go stating the obvious like that.
Soyogu: If you're gonna talk like that, then I'd say you're the same as ever.
Haruhi: How about you tell me something I don't know.
(phone notification)
Soyogu: It… ain’t mine.
Haruhi: S’mine. It’s from Sei.
Part 3
Haruhi: (What’s he texting me for, though?)
While thinking he ought to be ringing up Shinkai instead, given he's waiting for him, I opened the LIME message Sei sent to me.
Haruhi: …Wha?
Soyugu: What’s up?
"Since today is Soyogu-kun's birthday, I thought of buying a congratulatory cake and heading home soon as possible, however I forgot whether if we still have tea that would pair well with it in the fridge or not."
Haruhi: ("My apologies, but would you mind checking? The brand is—")
Haruhi: …It's your bday today?
Soyogu: Huh? Yeah, but…
Soyogu: Did Sei-san tell you?
Haruhi: Said he'll buy cake and come home ASAP.
Haruhi: And asked to check if there was still tea left in the fridge.
Soyogu: I’m incredibly grateful for that. But ain’t that something you should’ve kept a secret from me?
Haruhi: He asked the wrong guy.
Soyogu: Can't deny that.
I mean, you oughta have to told me earlier— … is what I was about to say, but then swallowed my words.
Haruhi: (Not the type to say how it’s his bday and he’s gonna celebrate, huh. Does seem like that’s how he’s always been…)
A memory came flooding back, reminding me of a scene I saw once in our former classroom, which was Soyogu being congratulated.
He didn't go out there and announce it was his bday then either that time, yet our classmates had gathered naturally around him.
Haruhi: (Aah, that was in June, wasn't it.)
Soyogu: If Sei-san's meeting's done, then we can't keep on playing for longer, huh.
Haruhi: We can save whenever, so it's fine.
Soyogu: Then let's keep going at it.
Talking about it like there's going to naturally be an other chance to play like this, made a certain thought cross my mind— that's just the kinda guy Shinkai is, huh.
Haruhi: (Surprisingly don’t remember much about what Shinkai was like back in middle school.)
Haruhi: (...Nah. That's all I can remember ‘cuz it’s Shinkai we’re talking ‘bout, ain’t it.)
Haruhi: Gonna check if we have tea.
Haruhi: —By the way, Shinkai.
Soyogu: Yeah?
Haruhi: Happy birthday.
Soyogu: Haha. Thanks, man.
And there he was, smiling away, not in the least surprised.
A few days later.
Haruhi: (Meeting was pretty smooth. The sooner it's over, the better. Time to head back.)
Soyogu: Oh, now that's unusual. Had a meeting here?
Haruhi: S’done so I’m going home. Cya.
Soyogu: Ichikawa.
His voice called out to me as I got in the elevator, and I turned my head around.
Soyogu: Thanks for the other day. I had lotsa fun.
Haruhi: ……
A co-worker I see from time to time, but it's not like we got anything else going on outside of that.
And if I had to describe what relationship we have, then former middle school classmates will do.
Haruhi: (And it's not like that makes us best of pals either, like, so what if we hung out the other day? It's always like that. )
Haruhi: (...Even then.)
Soyogu: Hm?
Haruhi: S’whatever.
Soyogu: Sounded like you wanted to say something there.
Haruhi: Don’t got anything to say.
Soyogu: Guess so.
—Even then.
Let’s game together again when we get a chance to— is what I was thinking.
Next year, if I remember Shinkai's birthday, I'll at least go out of my way to congratulate him for it.

Part 1
I was in the middle of taking a break before resuming work in the afternoon. While it was quiet within the café, someone you don’t often see around here dropped by.
Mikado: Oh my, if it isn’t Taiga-chan!
Kamiya: That’s a surprise, it’s been a while.
Taiga: My apologies. I came for the department leader meeting but arrived sooner than I thought, I’ll hang around here for a little while if you don’t mind.
Mikado: No need to apologize, you’re not bothering us at all. Please make yourself at home to your heart’s content.
Yashiro: Ah, in that case— please come sit over here, if you’d like.
Noticing Mika-san looking around as to where to lead him, I suggested the four person table that was already occupied by me sitting there comfortably. In the meantime, Kamiya-kun brought us drinks and the menu.
Taiga: Yashiro-san, were you also taking a break? Don’t mind if I do.
Yashiro: Yes, I’m also scheduled to be present at the department leader meeting— I look forward to working together later.
Mikado: Now, when was the last time that I met with Taiga-chan? Either way, I’m happy to see everything is fine on your end.
Taiga: I can say the same about yourself, Mikado-san, I’m glad you’re also doing fine.
Mikado: Fufu, it’s because of Taiga-chan’s power that my body and soul feel invigorated.
Taiga: Haha, there’s no way I'm capable of doing such a thing.
Kamiya: That reminds me. Have you tried out the new menu? I recommend it.
Taiga: Sure, since I’m already here, mind if I go for it?
Kamiya: Of course! I’ll tell Yu-san that it’s also for you, Tsukimoto-san.
Taiga: Nina-san’s in charge of the kitchen today, huh. I’m looking forward to it.
Yashiro: (The warm welcome towards Tsukimoto-san is amazing.)
A little later, we thanked the food that arrived. And as we were eating, Tsukimoto-san continued to get dragged into conversations.
Mikado: So, you have a meeting coming up after this, right?
Taiga: Yes, I’d also like to go over a few things regarding accounting.
Kamiya: Accounting… It seems like a job that requires an eye for detail.
Mikado: And that’s why he’s a good fit to be a reliable accountant.
Kamiya: Now why are you the one bragging about him, Mika-san.
Kamiya: I have to admit it’s true that Tsukimoto-san is attentive with noticing the smaller stuff, and I always think it’s impressive how reassuring he is, too.
Taiga: You two are praising me way too much here.
I passed Tsukimoto-san, who was bashfully talking, a sidelong glance and thought to myself.
Yashiro: (Accounting, huh.)
Generally, I understand this too from working at the main office. It’s difficult managing the occurring budgets for every department and events all at once
Yashiro: (Being accurate is part of it, but handling such large sums of money comes with its own sense of responsibility, or tension…)
With said responsibility weighing on my mind, I reached for my drink.
Part 2
Ai: That’s all.
The meeting came to an end, and Kosaka-san dismissed us. And with that I felt the unique relaxation that comes with finishing up a particular job.
Ai: Tsukimoto, do you have a moment?
Taiga: Ah, yes. It’s about the accounting books, right.
My mind subconsciously drifted towards the two of them talking as I was organizing the meeting summary for today.
Taiga: The result of the cash inspection came with a discrepancy. Although it’s by a few hundred of yen—
Ai: If there’s an error even after your confirmation, then it can’t be a miscalculation.
Taiga: I’d still like to have it checked more or less. Could you please go over the parts I reviewed, if that doesn’t pose a problem for you?
Ai: Got it, I’ll look.
Yashiro: (This is the kind of conversation between people who know how to do their job. It’s a good tempo.)
Taiga: I’d also like to conduct a hearing with each department, however—
Ai: Let’s take care of it now. Every leader is present at the moment.
Ai: —Fushimi.
Shizuka: I heard you. A hearing, you say?
Taiga: Yes, please.
Fushimi-san joined in, and I threw another glance, seeing the three of them discussing with a serious expression on their faces.
Yashiro: (I’ll also do what I can to ensure that their work can be carried out smoothly.)
Even having earned Kosaka-san’s trust, Tsukimoto-san still requested a thorough inspection. And while I was watching over him and stretched out my back—
Ai: Yashiro.
Yashiro: Yes?
I left my seat and headed towards Kosaka-san the moment he called out to me. Fushimi-san still was in the middle of the hearing from the looks of it. Tsukimoto-san nodded towards me as our eyes met.
Ai: We’ll be conducting hearings regarding accounting with each department leader.
Ai: Could you take care of making notes, following the meeting from earlier? Tsukimoto and I will review them after.
Yashiro: (Seems that there’s something I can help with right away.)
Yashiro: Yes. I should begin with summarizing the watchdog department’s matters first, right.
Taiga: Having Yashiro-san summarize everything works out perfectly, I’ll be able to concentrate on the hearing then.
Taiga: It’s much appreciated.
Part 3
With all the department leaders wrapping up the hearing, Kosaka-san left the office after getting to the bottom of the issue. Before I knew it, Tsukimoto-san and I were the only ones left.
Taiga: Thank you very much for compiling everything.
Yashiro: This was the least I could do. I’m glad I was of use, if anything.
Taiga: I wouldn’t say it was “the least” you could do by any means.
Taiga: It might be presumptuous for me to say, but I believe that you’re doing incredibly important work here, Yashiro-san.
Yashiro: (Important work…)
And then, when I thought about how I couldn't hold a candle to Tsukimoto-san—
Taiga: Not only did you write down the contents of what was discussed— the problem at hand and the conclusions, together with the challenges going forward, were all neatly organized in a legible way.
Taiga: This doesn’t apply to just taking notes, I feel like there’s times where you all pick up on parts that hadn’t been put into words in various places…
Taiga: I’m grateful from the bottom of my heart to be able to work with such an attentive person— is what I think.
Yashiro: (…Ah.)
The words from Tsukimoto-san, spoken with such straightforward sincerity, deeply moved me before I could even feel flattered.
I felt as if I caught a glimpse of the reasons why Tsukimoto-san is received with such open arms, and relied upon, too.
Yashiro: Thank you.
Yashiro: All I’m doing is desperately trying to do what I can all the time… Truthfully, I am not that capable…
Yashiro: However, I will do my best for you to keep thinking of me like that.
Taiga: Haha, I’m the same, to be honest.
Yashiro: Eh..?
Taiga: I’m also just desperately doing what I can.
Taiga: Fortunately, I’m blessed with an environment where I’m able to be of help to everyone… atleast, that’s what I think everyday.
Yashiro: (I see, Tsukimoto-san is no different.)
Most of it probably has to do with his very earnest personality, but his words lifted up my mood incredibly so.
Taiga: …Right. If you’d like, please come hang out at the house again next time.
Taiga: I’ve gotten a spark of inspiration from how delicious Nina-san’s cooking was. And I’d like to hear your thoughts on it.
Yashiro: If you don’t mind having me, then by all means.
He must have intentionally led the conversation to a lighter topic. Feeling grateful for his consideration, I nodded my head in agreement.
i have been dealing with detoriating health through 2025 which reached its peak late dec and early 2026.
i will spare the details but normally it should be something i can recover from once i am put on treatment but that will be for sometime around later this month. and then it will be a slow progress.
i am hoping to resume with translating again around april or may atleast. i miss translating but it is hard to concentrate or find any motivation in this state unfortunately. in general i have no interest or energy to do anything but play video games and sleep which is a bit of a sad life.
again i will be ok! but just wanted to let everyone know i haven't stopped or quit, i am just dealing with issues unfortunately. (i will be reblogging this to my other sideblog because it will be the same post anyway)
I just want it out there, in case you hadn’t been told before- I think your choice in translating Akehoshi’s kansai dialect as southern and the full commitment you have to it is such a breath of fresh air, in an era where a lot of fan translators don’t do such a thing :’) I often feel like people are too scared to translate characters talking a unique way, even if that’s how it WOULD be done. But you’re not afraid of that! I can tell in your translations you really have an understanding and love for these characters. I want more translators to commit to giving characters accents and dialects and localize them properly like you!!! You do a wonderful wonderful job
thank you so so much for sending this ask. it genuinely means a lot to me.
i've been struggling a bit with tling recently but this def motivated to keep doing what i do:) sometimes i wonder if im doing too much or its a useless endeavor to mull so much over such things, but then i remember how fun it is to just figure these things out and just spend hours learning how versatile and beautiful language can be.
again thank you so so much. i want to say more but i am pretty verbose lol so i'll just keep it at this.
[Break My Case] SSR Card Story - Sei Okiya "Here’s to Aporia!"
Translation by akewanchan.
Source is mobile game Break My Case.
Part 1
Sei: How nice to be blessed with lovely weather and calm waves.
Yashiro: …Ah, yes. Indeed.
There’s a reason as to why I responded slowly.
I was distracted by Sei-san currently being surrounded.
Yu: ……
Sei: Oh my, it seems that Nina-kun has also come outside on the deck.
Yu: Yeah.
Sei: Fufu. Are you here for some birdwatching?
Yu: No.
Yu: You walk around with bird feed to get flocked like that?
That was something I was wondering about myself.
If anything, it seemed more as if he came to observe Sei-san’s current predicament of being surrounded by birds, than the birds themselves.
Sei: Not at all. I’m rather perplexed myself, but it does delight me.
Sei: Truth to be told, I am quite fond of birds.
Yu: Really now.
Sei: Could it be that you feel the same?
Yu: No. Was simply curious.
No sooner than after he spoke, Niina-san left right as his curiosity was satiated.
Sei: And here I was certain about Nina-kun being a likeminded spirit… Seems that I misunderstood him— My, what a shame.
Sei: What about you, Yashiro-san, are you interested in birds?
Yashiro: To some extent…?
Sei: That is more than enough.
Sei: The majority of migratory birds are the same as dolphins— They have the possibility to engage in hemispheric sleep, where they alternate between letting one half of the brain rest by sleeping with one eye open at a time.
The lecture, which had started without warning, continued without any interruptions due to Sei-san’s vast knowledge on the topic at hand.
Sei: That being said, it still is quite a long trek to make. Which is why there’s times where they come down on the boats to take a break.
Yashiro: So there’s actually a reason behind it.
Sei: Yes. Unless they are terribly exhausted, they do not overstay their welcome.
Sei: By the way… I believe you’re also in order for a breather.
Yashiro: Eh?
Sei: I suppose it’s because you ended up listening to my rather lengthy lecture, but you seem somewhat tired.
Yashiro: Oh, that’s not the case at all… If anything, listening to your explanation refreshed me instead.
Sei: Fufu. Thank you for your kind words.
Sei: Nonetheless, due to how we’re in an unfamiliar environment, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
As he said that, Sei-san fell silent and his gaze turned towards the birds.
Sei: Even if one were to be accustomed to traveling like they were, the slightest change of environment comes with its own fair share of stress.
Sei: …Aah, it seems that Nina-kun is concerned, too.
While looking at Nina-san who was a little further away, standing in the salty sea breeze, Sei-san pleasantly smiled in his direction.
Yashiro: (It’s not far-fetched to say Nina-san and Onda-san have a sense of stability, or perhaps it’s unrelated to the location when it comes to these two.)
Yashiro: (As for Sei-san…)
Sei: The wind has picked up, how about we head back inside.
Sei-san nonchalantly shielded me from the wind picking up, and it made me realize once again. Not only does Sei-san know how to maintain his own pace, he is also someone who is considerate of his surroundings, no matter where he may be.
Part 2
Sei: To continue from where we left our previous conversation at—
While walking down the corridor leading to the main hall, Sei-san opened his mouth as if he remembered something.
Sei: There are some people who have difficulty falling asleep when they change their pillows, but how about you, Yashiro-san?
Yashiro: I don’t quite recall having experienced that before… I think.
Sei: That’s good to hear. It’s merely a pillow, yet, a pillow.
Sei: Some time before, I had the chance to have a talk with a seasoned traveller, and it turns out bringing your favourite items somewhere is a common occurrence.
Sei: Such as an alarm clock, incense and tea leaves… That person considered such items to be symbols of their daily life— It was truly fascinating.
Yashiro: What would you take with you, Sei-san?
Sei: If I had to make my choice, it’d amount to something like a novel I was in the middle of reading. What about yourself?
Yashiro: Right, good question.
I was now on the receiving end of the question I had casually asked, and in a panic, I went through all the luggage I imagined in my head.
Yashiro: There’s nothing that comes to mind in particular… Sorry, it’s not an interesting answer.
Sei: No, not at all. It was more than sufficient to be a thought-provoking answer.
Yashiro: (I-in what way…?)
As always, I found myself being lost in my own thoughts about what the mysterious Sei-san was “‘feeling” around for.
Sei: Ah, however, indeed…
Sei-san, who was walking beside me, broke out in a monologue.
With a flick of my head I looked up to him, being met with a gentle expression.
Sei: A symbol of daily life that I would come to want to take with me while travelling, might be Taiga’s home cooking.
Sei: Enjoying the local food is a pleasure of its own, however I can see myself yearning for the familiar tastes I’ve grown used to at times.
Sei: Moreover, Taiga’s cooking— onigiri, salad, pork miso soup… each dish conveys how they were made with us in mind.
Sei-san brought up what must’ve been memorable dishes for the three of them.
I’m certain that there was even more, and I could imagine how spending time together led to these becoming symbols of daily life, as Sei-san called it.
Sei: Besides if it were Taiga himself, he’d thoroughly research everything no matter where we go, and would want to be entrusted with preparing souvenir lists and the like.
Yashiro: Fufu, it’s as if Tsukimoto-san himself is right beside us. Ah, but would that mean that Ichikawa-kun is left house-sitting on his own…?
Sei: I believe Haruhi would be delighted to see us off, however for Taiga it would be a different story, wouldn’t it.
Yashiro: With all due respect, I imagine will have Tsukimoto-san trouble sleeping, which is why it would be better to invite Ichikawa-kun and travel with the three of you together, perhaps.
Sei: No doubt. That compassionate side is also a charming point of his, after all.
It was made clear that Sei-san cherishes Tsukimoto-san from his choice of words alone.
While gradually feeling a warmth spreading throughout my chest, I listened carefully to Sei-san weaving a tale of the administration department travelling together.
Part 3
After parting ways with Yashiro-san, I found myself on the deck once more.
Yu: ……
Gazing at the evening sun sinking into the sea, Nina-kun made an appearance as if it was a reenactment from earlier today.
Sei: It seems that the birds have made this ship their temporary home.
Sei: And the next morning, they’ll be carried to a location they never imagined… I suppose it’s nothing unheard of.
Yu: Guess so.
A reply of a few words, with the same old tempo and sensation of warmth behind them.
Is it a plain lack of interest in the topic a hand, or—
Sei: Incidentally… I was discussing safety blankets with Yashiro-san earlier today.
Sei: What we were actually discussing was a “symbol of daily life” one would want to bring with them on their travels, and it was a considerably amusing conversation.
Sei: As for you, the answer must be Onda-kun, no?
Yu: ……
Despite him being unresponsive to the sudden change in the subject at hand, once I mentioned his name, a pair of eyes turned right towards me.
Sei: Am I wrong?
Yu: ……
Yu: Talkative as ever but still can’t see what you’re actually getting at. What do you want me to say?
Sei: I want to know more about you— that is what I think.
Sei: By the way, Yashiro’s answer was “There’s nothing that comes to mind in particular”.
Sei: Do you not believe that in itself is profoundly intriguing?
Yu: And you? What’s yours?
I couldn’t grasp his real intention. Nevertheless, this unexpected question had quietly excited me.
Sei: Taiga’s home cooking— that was my answer.
Yu: ……
Sei: There’s the matter of the houseplants and Okoge too, so being away from home for a prolonged period might prove to be difficult.
Yu: Sure enough Ichikawa’s also included, huh.
Sei: Sure enough, you say?
Yu: Easy to decipher given Taiga’s personality.
Sei: Fufu. Yashiro-san had told me the exact same thing. You both understand what Taiga is like very well.
Yu: Tsukimoto is easy to understand, he lives up to his words. It’s no more than being easy to predict based on his behaviour.
Even if that wasn’t what he intented.
What came after “Tsukimoto is” was a perfectly fitting phrase.
Sei: (Aaah, this is why humans are fascinating.)
Unable to conceal the smile spreading on my face, I watched over the evening sun slowly going under.
[Break My Case] SSR Card Story - Haruhi Ichikawa "Here’s to Aporia!"
Translation by akewanchan. Source is mobile game Break My Case.
Part 1
Heading towards the deck to take in the view of the sea at night, I noticed Ichikawa-kun standing there.
Yashiro: (Not often that you see him outside.)
Yashiro: Good work today.
Haruhi: Ah, Yashiro. GG EZ.
Ichikawa-kun threw a fleeting glance at me as the words left his mouth, and then his gaze turned towards the sky again.
Yashiro: (I’m only guessing, but maybe he’s looking at the moon?)
Yashiro: (I must be bothering him with my presence if he’s busy. However, since I’ve gone out of my way to greet him, it’s too late to take my leave…)
Haruhi: I’m more bothered by the fact that you’re standing behind me in pure silence.
Haruhi: S’not like it matters if you stay here or go away, whatever floats your boat.
Yashiro: Then… If you insist.
I moved next to Ichikawa-kun, and looked up at the night sky in the same manner as him. Without anyone else around us, silence had fallen for a brief moment.
Haruhi: …Heard from Sei about how “the moon was beautiful tonight”, so came to see it for myself— That’s pretty much it.
Haruhi: Feels like I pulled a double SSR by not only being able to see the moon up in the sky, but the reflection of it, too.
The gaze of Ichikawa-kun, who had been mumbling to himself, had fallen down to below the sky without noticing.
Yashiro: (...Ah, he’s right. The moon is reflecting on the surface of the ocean.)
Haruhi: It’s all the same water, yet looking at it from a sandy beach or a pier still hits differently than here, huh.
Haruhi: Feels like an exclusive view you could only get from being on a ship.
Yashiro: Perhaps he had noticed that himself, which is why he told you how beautiful the moon was.
Haruhi: Aaah— Right, it’s Sei we’re talking ‘bout after all.
With a gentle whoosh, the sound of the waves were resonating.
And then audible footsteps blended in together with the echoes.
Yuzuru: Yashiro-san, Ichikawa-kun. Here, if you’d like.
Some warm drinks and blankets were being held out.
Yashiro: (I wonder if he saw us outside and went out of his way to arrange these for us.)
Yashiro: Thank you very much.
Haruhi: Thanks.
Haruhi: …Mm. Just the right temp.
Ichikawa-kun remarked as he spared no time wrapping the blanket around him and grabbing a drink. Tempted to try a sip myself, it was indeed the perfect temperature— Not too hot, neither too lukewarm.
Haruhi: Dunno why it feels different, even though you did the same thing as Taiga would.
Haruhi: Maybe it’s the way you called out to us? Or the status of our friendship bar?
Yuzuru: Does it feel that much different?
Haruhi: Taiga’s more like a mama. All the nagging included.
Haruhi: You got that supporter role going on, or like, the manager of a school club.
Yashiro: (Someone who enjoys looking after others, in other words. Though, Ichikawa-kun is right in how they’re different.)
Yashiro: Being considerate comes with its own fair share of different approaches, doesn’t it.
Yuzuru: Tsukimoto-san is the kind to pay attention to all the finer details.
Yuzuru: Thanks to that, I am able to entrust various things to him without any worries.
I redirected my gaze ahead of me, and unintentionally made eye contact with Ichikaxa-kun. That also goes for you, Kise-san— I could tell we were thinking of the same thing.
Yuzuru: …I do feel that it has been quite a while since I’ve talked face to face with you like this, Ichikawa-kun.
Yuzuru: I haven’t been able to come by the house lately, but is there anything I could help you with?
Part 2
Haruhi: Everything’s good. Same as usual.
Yuzuru: I see. I’m glad to hear that.
Yuzuru: All of the administration department are on great terms though, not much room for concern if I had to say.
Yuzuru: There’s a sense of security with how well everyone is always on the same page.
Haruhi: S’not like we never disagree on anything, y’know. I’m often beefing with Taiga ‘bout our difference in opinions.
Yashiro: What do you do when that happens?
Haruhi: One side backs down and it ends, basically.
Haruhi: But, when none of us do and it looks like it’ll get dragged out longer than needed, Sei will step in and wrap it up all nicely.
I’m not surprised in the slightest to hear Sei-san’s name being mentioned.
As you’d expect— I nodded while continuing to attentively listen to Ichikawa-kun talk.
Haruhi: He sticks to watching over us until we’re about to 1v1, though.
Haruhi: Intervening when it’s necessary makes me think he’s some kinda balancer.
From his nonchalant way of speaking, it seems that Ichikawa-kun keeps a close eye on Sei-san on a regular basis.
Yashiro: (How he’s able to objectively analyze someone regardless if they’re close or not, is very typical of Ichikawa-kun.)
Yuzuru: Another way of being considerate, perhaps.
Haruhi: Maybe.
Haruhi: In any case, I do feel thankful for Sei being around.
Yuzuru: Yes. That I can tell.
Yashiro: …Everyone in the administrative department perfectly balances each other out.
Haruhi: Can’t you say the same for the main one, though?
Yuzuru: It’s due to Ai-san being one step ahead, that the main office is able to neatly keep it all together.
Haruhi: For us, everything will fall apart if anyone were to be one step ahead.
Haruhi: Not that we’d end up all on bad terms, but more along the lines of not being able to be on the same page anymore.
Haruhi: On the other hand, ain’t like we’re always walking side by side either.
Yuzuru: It’s probably because it’s the three of you that there’s a consistent balance.
Haruhi: …I guess. Probs.
Yashiro: (Not like they’re usually walking side by side, but neither is anyone one step ahead either, huh.)
At first glance, you could point out how it’s a contradiction, yet oddly enough it made sense when it came to the administration department.
Yashiro: (Perhaps it’s precisely because Ichikawa-kun is keeping an eye out for everyone in the department that one could say that.)
Haruhi: And that’s why the three of us is just right.
While looking at the moon’s reflection on the water, Ichikawa-kun’s cheeks relaxed just a little as he mumbled.
I felt as if I have learned yet another thing about the administration department’s relationship.
Part 3
A little while after our conversation, Yashiro and Yuzuru-san went back inside.
I wanted to stick along for a lil’ longer, and mindlessly stared at the moon swaying back and forth between the waves.
Haruhi: (When Sei said it was beautiful, wonder if what came to mind was the sky or the ocean.)
Haruhi: (...Ah.)
[text messages]
Tsukimoto: Where are you right now?
okoge: outside
Tsukimoto: Thats way too vague.
Tsukimoto: You know you"ll catch a cold if you keep standing in the sea breeze
Tsukimoto: What about water? got any with you?
okoge: yea
[end of text messages]
Haruhi: (This dude worries too much, I’m not a kid.)
I let out a sigh thinking he can’t be for real, being sure Taiga would know what was on my mind. ‘Cuz that’s how it always goes between us.
[text messages]
Sei: I’m glad you were able to get in touch.
Sei: I let him know how you’d most likely be out on the deck given how I told you about the moon tonight. Yet as one would expect, he couldn’t help but worry.
Sei: Next time, even if it is a mere word, please do tell Taiga yourself about your whereabouts.
[end of text messages]
Haruhi: (See, this is what I meant.)
Whether it's through LIME or face to face, Taiga and Sei never changed.
This kind of back and forth I’ve grown used to by now, was strangely giving me a sense of security.
[text messages]
Sei: By the way, if you happen to still be there, would you mind if I came over?
Sei: I believe I’d be able to see a yet different kind of moon, given the passage of time.
okoge: sure
Sei: What about you, Taiga?
Tsukimoto: Im going
Tsukimoto: I'll bring some drinks and snacks while im at it
[end of text messages]
Haruhi: (No need for them to come together. Or do they wanna check up on me?)
Haruhi: (What an overprotective bunch, in that case.)
It’s something I’ve been feeling for a long time now.
I hid that sentiment deep within my heart, and looked up at the night sky once again.
Haruhi: (...The moon, huh.)
A dazzling, beautiful moon illuminating the sky, and a serene, dim reflection of it flickering between the waves.
Haruhi: (It really does put you at ease.)
The time spent waiting for these two to come, while admiring the two moons, was pleasantly calm.

Part 1
Taiga: Then, I will certainly let you know next time I make it.
Yashiro: Thank you very much.
Akehoshi: Now that sounds nice, whip up some for me too.
Yashiro: !
While I was talking to Tsukimoto-san, Akehoshi-kun chimed in.
Akehoshi: Dunno what this is all ‘bout though.
Taiga: Ah, right…
Taiga: Earlier, I remarked how delicious the food we received was and how I ought to try making it myself at home, which then led to inviting Yashiro-san over for a bite.
Taiga: How about coming along if you don’t mind, Hinomiya-kun?
Akehoshi: Ooh, sounds good. I’ll happily take you up on that.
Akehoshi: Dunno what you’ll be making but I know for a fact it’ll be delish.
Taiga: ….Heh.
Akehoshi: ? Did I say anythin’ weird?
Taiga: No… It’s the same way of asking me to do something, and yet it feels different when compared to Haruhi.
Taiga: Your requests come over as endearing, sorta.
Taiga: That guy’s just plain ol’ shameless about it.
Akehoshi: Ahaha, Haruhi-san just bluntly throws it out there, doesn't he.
Akehoshi: But ya kinda can’t refuse these kinda shameless demands, or can ya, Taiga-san.
Taiga: Eh. No, I wouldn’t say that’s completely the case, but…
Taiga: What he can do by himself, I oughta make him do it— That’s how I see it.
Taiga: …How do you usually go about it though, Hinomiya-kun?
Akehoshi: Huh.
Taiga: You know, with Yuragi?
Akehoshi: Aaaah.
Yashiro: Yuragi-kun is indeed the type to spontaneously ask others to do something for him.
Akehoshi: Hmmm— That being said, Yura ain’t really letting me pamper him to begin with.
Taiga: Pamper?
Akehoshi: Yup, goin’ all like “C’mon, do this for me~” to others. Ain’t that behaving like a spoiled child?
Taiga: Wouldn’t that mean Haruhi’s behaviour is the same then…?
Akehoshi: Right on the mark. Or ya thinkin’ it ain’t so, Taiga-san?
Taiga: Yeah. It’s pure laziness, if anything.
Akehoshi: Ahaha.
Akehoshi: But yanno, if someone responds to do it yerself, yet ya still hit ‘em with a “C’mon, do this for me”— I find that to be plenty spoiled behaviour.
Part 2
Akehoshi: Have to say that from what I heard so far, don’t think it’s the case here.
Akehoshi: I gotta ask, Taiga-san— Don’t ya get fed up with Haruhi-san ordering you around?
Akehoshi: If I thought someone was acting spoiled, I’d see it as cute and give ‘em some leeway for what I’d put up with, but it don’t seem that you feel the same way.
Yashiro: (He has a point… I’m a little curious to hear.)
Taiga: …Right— I’m having a hard time finding my words, though.
You could see how Tsukimoto-san was being fairly cautious with picking out what words to say, to make sure that there was no room for even the slightest of incorrect nuances.
Taiga: I think there’s a part of me that feels helped whenever someone tells me to do something for them.
Akehoshi: Mhm.
Taiga: By nature, I’m someone that ends up worrying for others even when they don’t ask me anything— Sorta.
Taiga: Despite this, there’s many times I fail to realize when there’s someone that genuinely needs help.
Taiga: So clearly being told that’s what they want from me, all the unnecessary stuff is left aside and I can actually do something meaningful for that person’s sake.
Yashiro: (I see…)
Taiga: That’s why, I don’t dislike it at all when Haruhi tells me to do something for him.
Taiga: I did imply earlier that the way Haruhi goes about it isn’t endearing, but it’s not like it’s something I want.
Taiga: Our relationship has gone beyond the need of walking on eggshells around each other.
Taiga: Because I know he’s not looking down at me.
A gentle expression on Tsukimoto-san’s face conveyed more than enough how there were no lies beneath his words.
Akehoshi: …Naw, Ito-san, y’hear all that? What a treat, huh.
Yashiro: Indeed.
Yashiro: If anything, it made their closeness and Tsukimoto-san’s pleasant personality apparent.
Akehoshi: Yup yup. Sure makes ya think whatta big-hearted guy Taiga-san is. Thank ya kindly for this appetizing convo.
Taiga: I don’t believe I’ve said anything to warrant—
Taiga: …Hm? My bad, seems I got a message.
Yashiro: Ah, I believe everyone received one. “Everyone gather round!” it says.
Akehoshi: Wonder what’s up. Either way, let’s get movin’.
Part 3
Taiga: (I’m glad it wasn’t anything dire.)
Shortly after receiving Suoh-san’s invitation and going our own ways.
What Hinomiya-kun said about me right before the gathering suddenly came back to mind while I was walking in the corridor.
Taiga: (Wouldn’t say I’m the kinda guy worthy of being called big-hearted, or anything like it.)
Taiga: (Yashiro-san and Hinomiya-kun are what you’d call good people—)
Akehoshi: Naw, how ‘bout we take it easy.
Taiga: (Hm?)
I could hear Hinomiya-kun’s voice ahead of me, and unconsciously quickened my steps to get closer. Turning around the corner, there was a drunk man and Hinomiya-kun with a smile plastered on his face trying to calm him down.
Drunkard: Just take it easy, huh… Sure got some nerve saying that with such a goofy ass grin on your face, think I’m stupid or what?
Akehoshi: I ain’t makin’ a fool outta— Ah.
Taiga: What’s the matter?
Without being able to leave them be, I stepped between them and started talking to the man.
Taiga: I’ll take it from here if there’s anything troubling you.
Drunkard: …Ain’t like there is.
Taiga: Then, shall I bring you some water instead?
Drunkard: I’m freakin’ telling ya, ’m fine.
As soon as the man made an awkward face, he abruptly turned his back towards me and left.
Taiga: (...Did I mess up with how I offered to help? Hopefully I didn’t scare him off…)
Akehoshi: Thank ya, Taiga-san. ‘ppreciate your help.
Taiga: Ah, no, my bad. Didn’t know what was happening, yet I jumped right into it.
Akehoshi: Naw, you really did save my hide. I oughta should’ve done what ya did— A handy learning experience for me.
Akehoshi: I was being gentle and made sure to smile, but wrapping it up properly like you is probably the better way to go ‘bout it, eh.
Taiga: No, it just happened to end up the way it did this time.
Taiga: Besides, I might’ve intimidated him and scared off someone that needed help instead.
Having said that, Hinomiya-kun let out a small laugh.
Akehoshi: Ya genuinely are a humble, kind fella, Taiga-san.
Taiga: (...That’s not who—)
Akehoshi: This right now also made me realize why Haruhi-san relies on ya.
Taiga: Eh?
Akehoshi: I’m sure how much ya let stuff slide and that kindness of yours is all part of it.
Akehoshi: But seeing how ya stepped right in between that fella and me really put me at ease.
Akehoshi: Wouldya look at that, no wonder yer such a reliable guy— Came to mind.
Without beating around the bush, it was exactly because of how straightforward those words were, that a feeling of embarrassment akin to uneasiness started swelling up within me.
Taiga: (Being cool about it, and putting people at ease, huh. These are far-fetched words for someone like me, but—)
Taiga: Then, I’m glad. It puts me at ease too to hear that from you.
Taiga: …Hinomiya-kun, thank you for everything you did for me today.
Akehoshi: Huh, did I do anythin’ for ya?
Taiga: Told me a bunch of stuff that made me happy.
Taiga: While we might not have many chances to see each other face to face, I’m delighted we were able to for today.
Akehoshi: Taiga-san, you sure got a romantic side to ya.
Taiga: …I do?
I’m glad to have met you.
A feeling that wasn’t only directed at Hinomiya-kun.
Yashiro-san, everyone in Aporia, and once again— that Haruhi who doesn’t hold back and goes for it straight away.
Taiga: (...I’m grateful from the bottom of my heart to be surrounded by people who make me feel like this.)

Part 1
Haruhi: I told you dude, didn’t say anything like that.
Taiga: Excuse me…?
Yashiro: (W-what’s happening…)
What was waiting for me after returning from going out was a tense atmosphere, with Tsukimoto-san and Ichikawa-kun at the center of it.
Haruhi: All I answered was that I’ll look over my sched and see ‘bout it.
Taiga: …It is true that they didn’t outwardly ask you to go eat a cake at their place.
Taiga: However, from the way they were speaking, dropping by their place should’ve been the obvious conclusion to make, and you know that.
Yashiro: (Ah. Could this be about…)
The moment I was grasping the gist from picking apart what they were talking about, I unexpectedly made eye contact with Ichikawa-kun.
Taiga: ? Haruhi, what are you loo—
Taiga: Eh, ah, Yashiro-san!?
Yashiro: Thank you for your hard work today. Is this about the design request?
Haruhi: You too. And yeah, it’s what we were just discussing, and how I got a “suggestion”.
Just as I had thought, the mentioned “they” seems to be about that sweets shop who sent in a request for a design the other day. After falling in love with the event design Ichikawa-kun made for one of Aporia’s events, the owner went out of their way to reach out to him.
Haruhi: They were crazy excited ‘bout it, so accepted it ‘cuz refusing would be more tiring… Was too quick to judge on that.
Yashiro: By the way, what is the suggestion…?
Taiga: They kindly extended an invitation to the café they’re running next to the store, and from that they want the flavor of the cakes and time spent at the café to be incorporated into the design itself.
Haruhi: All I do is take on a commission and whip up something that’ll make ‘em happy. That’s all my job is.
Haruhi: And I told ‘em it’s not like that suggestion is gonna impact the quality of my work, so there’s no need to go that far.
Haruhi: Like, think about it, a guy who doesn’t like sweets that much taking the trouble to go all the way to that café…
Taiga: But they also sell cakes that aren’t too sweet.
Taiga: Remember what Sei-san said? They were received well by people who aren’t too good with sweets, like you, and exploded in popularity.
Haruhi: Nah dude, ain’t like it’s guaranteed I’d have the same opinion.
Yashiro: (...It’s a hunch, but I wonder if it’s not the cake themselves that’s an issue for him.)
Looking for something to resolve the situation, I grabbed the proposal that was left onto the desk.
Yashiro: (! This is…)
Yashiro: Um, Ichikawa-kun.
Haruhi: …What?
Yashiro: (I’ll have to do my best here to sound as flat as possible to avoid coming off as pushy, no matter what… Alright, let’s go for it.)
Yashiro: How about going out to have some cake while getting a present for Okoge… would that work out for you?
Haruhi: Whatcha mean?
Yashiro: According to the proposal they’ve given us here, they also started with serving desserts supervised by veterinarians.
Haruhi: Huh? Where did you… Found it, font's tiny.
Yashiro: Furthermore, it seems to be made-to-order, too.
Haruhi: ….Hmmm. Guess I could go if that’s what they’re offering. Also, had enough of Taiga chewing my ear off.
Taiga: You just really, really… don’t know when to shut up!
Part 2
Several days later after meeting with the client. It’s been decided that Ichikawa-kun will be going to the café to try out the cakes. And then—
Ai: Yashiro, go along with him. For market research.
Yuzuru: As a matter of fact, Ichikawa-kun himself had asked about it, too. He'd like to use your impressions for reference, Yashiro-san.
Yashiro: (I don’t have confidence in my ability to review food, but since he had asked to…)
Yashiro: I will do my utmost to fulfill his request.
Thus, on a day after it rained. Ichikawa-kun and I met up at Shibuya Station.
Haruhi: It’s a short walk from the station, right.
Yashiro: Yes. From the nearest station… it’s…
Haruhi: What, just be direct and tell me. I’ve come this far, ain’t gonna whine how I’ll go back home, so.
Yashiro: …From the nearest station it’s a 15 minute walk, basically.
Haruhi: Do they even want us to get there or not?
Yashiro: Should we call a taxi?
Haruhi: Hmmmn… Nah, I’m good.
Haruhi: Took one earlier, but the car navigation broke down, and ended up giving instructions while looking at the app on my phone.
Haruhi: Was too much of a pain to keep talking, so in the end I got out of it halfway.
Yashiro: That’s… how do I say it, it must’ve been tough.
Haruhi: Either way, roads are really busy now ‘cuz of the rain earlier.
Haruhi: Dunno when it’ll arrive, and it’s enough to get stuck in traffic so I’ll bite the bullet and walk those 15 mins instead.
Yashiro: Are you feeling well enough?
Haruhi: Well, 15 mins or something should be manageable, I think. Like, just barely, with difficulty, on death’s doorstep.
—With Ichikawa-kun saying that, we decided to start walking into the direction of the shop.
Yashiro: Ichikawa-kun, how about we take a little break?
Haruhi: Quit it with that… If I stop my legs right now, I won’t be able to set one more step.
There’s a reason as to why Ichikawa-kun was completely exhausted.
It was as if a wave of constant misfortune hit him after leaving the station.
Haruhi: Ah, crap. Forgot my powerbank.
Haruhi: Geh… Got my socks wet from a puddle.
Haruhi: C’mon dude, ain’t no way mobile payment errors are a thing…
Yashiro: (Each one of these might be something trivial, but they all have their subtle effects…Ah.)
Just as I passed a sidelong glance to see how he was holding up, Ichikawa-kun became unsteady on his feet.
Yashiro: Ichikawa-kun!? Are you okay?
Haruhi: …And now my shoelaces came untied.
Yashiro: Eh.
Haruhi: Hasn’t this gotten way too ridiculous?
Ichikawa-kun let out a dry laugh while tying up his shoelaces.
Haruhi: Yashiro. Sorry, but lower the walking pace.
At that moment, Ichikawa-kun got interrupted by his smartphone ringing.
Haruhi: Uwah, and silent mode got turned off…
Haruhi: Yeah yeah, what’s it this time… ―Huh, Sei?
Part 3
Haruhi: One sec, gonna put you on speaker.
Haruhi: …What’s up, something happen?
Sei: “It is not a big deal, however… No, it is a matter of utmost importance, and must be treated as such.”
Sei: “...It slipped my mind to inform you before you had left.”
Haruhi: Sounds like it’s pretty bad from the way you’re talking.
Sei: “Fufu. Have you arrived at that aforementioned sweets shop yet?”
Sei: “You see, Taiga had grown curious about the cakes they have to offer, and if you don’t mind, may I ask you to bring a souvenir from there?”
Haruhi: ……
Yashiro: (What a peaceful turn of events.)
I darted a quick glance at Ichikawa-kun, and heard a sigh that sounded as if the air in his body left all at once.
Haruhi: Siiiiiiiiiiiiiigh…
Haruhi: Gotcha, I’ll buy you one too while we’re at it.
Sei: “Thank you very much. I’m looking forward to it.”
Haruhi: …And now a side quest popped up too.
After the phone call ended, Ichikawa-kun grumbled while still holding his smartphone. Without complaining about how much of a pain it is… I could see the corners of his mouth turning up ever so slightly from the side.
Haruhi: Yashiro, try this one.
With that, a plate with a small basque cheesecake was pushed towards me.
Yashiro: Ah, um…
Haruhi: Ah, not trying to force you, just want another impression besides my own, basically.
Haruhi: I’ve already eaten a piece, so.
Yashiro: …Then, if you don’t mind.
Haruhi: Go ahead.
Yashiro: (! Amazing, it’s melting inside my mouth…)
I was about to reach for one more bite, but then snapped back to my senses.
Yashiro: I’m sorry. I forgot about giving my thoughts on it.
Haruhi: Got that from just watching, no need for a food report.
Yashiro: (That’s a bit… embarrassing, I admit.)
Yashiro: What do you think, Ichikawa-kun?
Haruhi: ……
Ichikawa-kun silently looked down at the cake… and then directed his gaze at the inside of the shop from the terrace.
Haruhi: They want the flavor of the cakes and time spent at the café to be incorporated into the design itself... was it?
Haruhi: …Still think it wasn’t necessary to go this far for the sake of delivering something of quality.
Haruhi: But I guess I can understand what they were trying to convey, maybe.
Haruhi: It’s a cake after overcoming all that trouble— I’d be annoyed if that wasn’t the case, though.
Some days later. Ichikawa-kun’s finished design was received favorably by the client and the customers, and—
The production of merchandise quickly followed suit.
[Break My Case] SR Card Story - Taiga Tsukimoto "Scorching seaside"

Part 1
Female customer: You’re such a hottie~
Akehoshi: Why, thank ya very much. Yer quite the looker yourself, miss.
Female customer: Eeeh— That makes me like, so happy! Say, how about you ditch work for a lil’ bit?
Akehoshi: Gotta admit I’m dying to, but got a pile of stuff to take care of since I’m on the clock.
Akehoshi: The food here’s super delish, so make sure to enjoy it plenty in my stead.
Yashiro: (As you’d expect from Akehoshi-kun.)
Immediately after returning to the beach house to take a break with Shinkai-san, I was stopped in my tracks by seeing Akehoshi-kun serving the customers.
Shinkai-san, having a somewhat dumbfounded smile on his face, was also watching the scene before him unfold.
Soyogu: The way that guy goes with the flow is amazing. Between all the hustle and bustle of the beach house on top of that.
Yashiro: It really is unbelievable.
Yashiro: (...Hm?)
Taiga: …
At that moment, I noticed Tsukimoto-san looking at Akehoshi-kun from not too far away.
He quickly turned around and moved on, but I could see that he looked rather gloomy.
Soyogu: ...See that just now? Wonder what’s up with Taiga-san.
Yashiro: I’m wondering about that myself…
Afterwards, while eating with Shinkai-san in the back, Tsukimoto-san came to take a break at the right time. When asking what happened earlier, he seemed a little embarrassed as he explained the situation.
Taiga: My apologies for causing any needless concerns.
Taiga: …To be honest, a few customers had also talked to me a little while ago, but I wasn’t able to respond as smoothly as Akehoshi-kun did.
Taiga: Thank you for waiting. Here is your tropical juice as ordered.
Female customer 1: Wow, such a cute drink! And such a handsome server~!
Female customer 2: And he totally looks sooo great carrying those cute drinks decorated with flowers!
Taiga: Eh, ah,
Taiga: (It’s obvious that this is flattery. Thanking them would be strange. However, denying what the customer says would also be bad, wouldn’t it…?)
Taiga: (How am I supposed to answer here…!?)
Taiga: ……
Female customer 1: Um, everything okay there?
Female customer 2: Ah… sorry for suddenly bothering you like that. Thank you for the drinks!
Taiga: —Is what happened basically.
Taiga: I ended up thinking that, if I were able to respond as smoothly as Hinomiya-kun did, I wouldn’t have left things on a sour note with those customers.
Part 2
Yashiro: So that’s what was on your mind.
Soyogu: While I’m sure Taiga-san’s aware of it already, ain’t Hinomiya a special case here?
Soyogu: There’s no way I’d be able to pull it off like him. That guy’s just operating on a whole different level.
Taiga: ……
Soyogu: Besides, I’m sure they’re not thinking too deeply about it. No need for you to worry that much, Taiga-san.
Taiga: Yeah, probably.
Yashiro: (Tsukimoto-san has “but still” written all over his face. Since it’s about the customers, it’ll naturally weigh on his mind.)
Taiga: Oh, yeah. Shinkai-kun, how would you respond if a customer talked to you like that?
Taiga: Just for reference, I’d like to know if it’s not an issue.
Soyogu: How I’d do it? I wouldn’t think too much of it.
Soyogu: Even if they started complimenting me, I’d just give ‘em a smile and a cheers. More than enough, ain’t it?
Taiga & Yashiro: Oooh…
Yashiro: How do I say it, he's very charismatic…
Taiga: I see. Cheers, huh…
Soyogu: Nah, you guys are taking it way too seriously. Well, you two are as serious as you can get.
Soyogu: Anyway, ain’t everyone got their own personality and all?
Soyogu: People like you just the way you are, Taiga-san. I’d even go as far as saying you’re popular, too.
Taiga: Shinkai-kun… Thank you very much for cheering me up.
Soyogu: Wasn’t like I was trying to, but you’re welcome.
And then, after our break ended and we returned to the front—
Female customer 1: Ah, it’s you, thanks for earlier~
Two female customers, who were just about to leave the beach house, called out to Tsukimoto-san.
Yashiro: (These must be customers who talked to Tsukimoto-san.)
Soyogu: Seems like they didn’t mind it in the slightest.
Yashiro: Indeed.
Female customer 1: Sorry for stepping out of line earlier. Ah, but the juice and food was delicious!
Female customer 2: We’re off to have some fun on the beach now, but we’ll come again when we need a break.
Taiga: That’s…
Tsukimoto-san was startled to hear that coming from the customers, and then lowered his head.
Taiga: It truly delights me to hear that you enjoyed your time at our establishment. Thank you very much.
Taiga: Please come by again!
With a polite attitude that could more or less serve as a textbook example, his words accompanied with a bow were very much like Tsukimoto-san, and then—
Female customers: …Puh, ahaha!
After a short pause, both of the women started laughing.
Female customer 1: Oh come on, I’m sorry but that’s way too formal for a beach house!
Female customer 1: Though, if you’re that happy about it, then so am I.
Female customer 2: Hey, didn’t that like, make your heart skip a beat? He’s so adorbs!
Taiga: T-thank you very much…?
Female customer 1: We’ll totally come back again!
Taiga: !
Taiga: Thank you, I’m sincerely looking forward to your next visit.
Yashiro: (I’m glad, and Tsukimoto-san looks relieved, too.)
Being considerate about how other people feel and worrying about how to respond back, having it weigh on his mind that he might’ve made things awkward— all of it was a result of Tsukimoto-san’s sincere personality.
And it’s precisely because of that sincerity that he was able to make those customers smile.
Soyogu: Yeah, Taiga-san just being himself is the best kinda Taiga-san.
Yashiro: I feel the same way.
Shinkai-san was looking at Tsukimoto-san with an adoring, warm look in his eyes, and I couldn’t help but wholeheartedly agree.
[Break My Case] R Card Story - Sei Okiya "As for poisonous flowers"

Part 1
Taiga: Wait, Sei-san. Going for the neck is a bit much…
Sei: There’s no need to be afraid, you’ll be fine. I would never do anything awful to you, after all.
Taiga: OUCHouchouch!!!!!
Mao: Hey, is there anyone free at the—
Mao: …What are you doing?
Sei: I’m giving him a massage, as you can see.
Sei: I thought to let his muscles relax to prevent fatigue from taking over him, given how he moved a lot of heavy luggage around.
Taiga: Sei-san, my muscles have loosened up enough already— Guh….
Mao: Uwah…
Sei: By the way, Mao-kun, do you need something?
Mao: Yes. I was asked to run a shopping errand, but I need someone who’s able to carry a lot.
Sei: I see. In that case…
Mao: Thanks for your help, Okiya-san.
Sei: It’s not a problem. Taiga had practically taken care of all the venue preparations, which is why there wasn’t much for me to do.
Sei: Thus, going on an errand is the least I could do.
Sei: Is this everything that was written on the shopping list?
Mao: No, there’s one more. Seems like we need some flowers.
Sei: (I’ve heard that all the flowers for this café event were all purchased in bulk, however…)
Sei: What will these flowers be used for?
Mao: Table decoration. Looks like they want more variety.
Mao: Well, their expectations were more along the lines of if there were any nice, cute flowers. Whether we do get any or not doesn’t seem to matter much.
Sei: (Table decoration, hm.)
I surveyed the area while pondering, and then in the corner of my eye— a small, sweet flower that had caught my attention
Sei: Mao-kun. If the only requirements are for it to be an appealing, charming flower—
Sei: Do you not agree this flower fits the bill?
Mao: …Lily of the valley?
Sei: Yes. A lovely flower, is it not?
I pointed at the small potted flower, and a pair of displeased eyes bored into me.
Mao: ……
Sei: Fufu, I know what you’re thinking. It’s not appropriate to have “poisonous flowers” in a place where people come to enjoy their meals.
Mao: That’s right.
Sei: However… It’s such an adorable flower, to the extent I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it out if it weren't harmful.
Sei: Alas. No beautiful rose without a thorn, no sweet lily of the valley without poison.
Sei: I wonder, does it come at a cost because it is precious? Or rather, cannot it not be precious if it came without a cost?
Sei: Regardless, “all that comes with a price”’ is quite intriguing indeed.
Mao: It’s without a doubt that there are good things in this world that won’t cost you anything.
Mao: I understand why you’d be interested in what “comes with a price” within that.
Mao: …Okiya-san, considering how you mastered giving “painful massages”, don’t tell me that’s—
Sei: There are various opinions when it comes to defining what’s something that comes at a cost or not.
[Break My Case] Personal Story - Soyogu Shinkai, Part 1
Translation by akewanchan.
Source is mobile game Break My Case.
“...Moving onto the next topic. It’s been revealed that professional kickboxer Mine Eito passed away on the 4th of this month.”
“According to the statement from the company, the fighter had been doing nothing but complain to his family about his poor condition for several months now—”
At worst, you’ll lose your life. But one wrong step, and you’ll take one.
It’s the path I’ve chosen with determination, fully aware what came with it.
It wasn’t just me.
I’m sure he thought the same.
Soyogu: Apologies, comments, anything you didn’t ask for— you’ll get none of that from me. What you might do going forward, what you will or will not say, it’s all for you to do as you please with.
Soyogu: However, there is one thing I would like to ask.
Soyogu: Did Mine-san really suffer from a chronic illness?
???: It’s as the official announcement said. My brother's “worsening chronic illness” had claimed his life.
Soyogu: …What about the reason behind it becoming worse?
???: The match against you has nothing to do with it, Shinkai-san. If anything, I believe having such a close match until the very end was his lifelong desire.
???: That’s why… let the sleeping dogs lie. For your sake, too.
Soyogu: …
???: Shinkai-san, I must remind you that you’re a fighter with a future. Different from my brother who hadn’t been able to win any titles until his last breath. You cannot let this sway you from your path.
Soyogu: …Is that what they told you?
Soyogu: “That’s why, you shouldn’t tell him the truth.”
???: …In order to avoid any misunderstandings, I refrained from saying anything unnecessary. That is all. I’m certain my brother would think the same.
???: Because everyone wants to protect you.
Soyogu: …Knew it. I knew it.
“Shinkai, calling it quits forreal? Y’know you’re just in your teens, yeah?”
“What a waste. Here I was thinking some amazing guy had shown up to make a scene."
“There’s no need to quit, it’s not like you killed him or something.”
“I mean, it’s not like the claim is without substance, it was a few days after that match.”
“Even then, putting Shinkai on the spot here makes me feel sorry for him, yanno. Don’t wanna kick someone while they’re down, but the difference of strength between them was freaking surreal. Dude pretty much already had the bag but Mine kept standing up over and over, and then disaster followed.”
“The company said that it had nothing to do with any wounds from the match, remember. This whole conversation is getting blown out of proportion, leave it be.”
He was a strong man.
Someone who loved fighting with everything he got in the ring.
No righteousness, no wickedness— it’s the result of both of us doing the job we had to do.
That’s all there is to it.
Unfortunately, in this hell we call society, ego is what makes the world go round. People decide by their emotions. Countless others make the judgment.
And as a result, I was forgiven, and protected.
Even though I didn’t beg, neither wished, for it.
Haruhi: —Uuugh, s’cold…
One night after Christmas had passed. I had come to meet with Sei-san at the house regarding the work that will start after the beginning of the year.
Instead of Sei-san, who would be coming home late due to the roads being a little busy, or Taiga-san, who had gone out to do some shopping, it was the rare sight of Ichikawa opening the door. As he retracted his hands back into his sleeves and was warming himself up, he quickly crawled back into the kotatsu.
Haruhi: There’s coffee Taiga brewed in that pot over there. If you wanna drink, it’s all self-service so go ahead.
Soyogu: In this one, huh. Might as well grab a cup.
Haruhi: M’kay, me too then.
Soyogu: Ain’t it self-service?
Haruhi: Depleted all my stamina leaving the kotatsu and opening the door.
Soyogu: You’re weak as hell.
Haruhi: Tell me something I don’t know.
I was surprised, but thinking it was stating the obvious, I grabbed two cups from the cupboard and poured coffee. I put a cup down in front of Haruhi, and then I took a seat at the counter.
Haruhi: Aren’t you cold?
Soyogu: Nah. Biked up a hill so my body temperature is pretty high at the moment.
Haruhi: Unlikely that we are the same kind of animal… Going by bike in this season is like, gonna freeze you on a hardcore level.
Soyogu: I’m the one ‘round here that got a normal human body. Why the hell are you whining about the cold at room temperature to begin with?
Haruhi: It is winter.
Soyogu: (...Ah.)
Seemingly out of nowhere, a promo for a new year’s eve martial arts special started playing from the television.
Haruhi: …
Following where my eyes turned, Ichikawa threw a fleeting glimpse at the screen, and then silently looked back down at the phone in his hands.
Soyogu: …… These guys are humans just like you, y’know.
Haruhi: Well, you have chihuahuas and tosas, but both are still considered to be dogs.
Soyogu: Got the self-awareness of a chihuahua, huh.
Haruhi: Dude, what kinda self-awareness does a chihuahua got?
While half-mindedly keeping the conversation going, that commercial had come to an end. My eyes stayed on the television, watching some quiz with celebrities I wasn’t all too familiar with, and not long after, Ichikawa opened his mouth.
Haruhi: …The quiz, wanna watch?
Soyogu: Nah. Feel free to change it if you want.
Haruhi: Tell me, Shinkai, you normally play games?
Soyogu: ? Aren’t you the gamer here?
Haruhi: I mean, I don’t mind playing. Just that, dunno what to say anymore so maybe we should just do something— is what I thought.
Haruhi: S’fine if you’re not up for it.
Soyogu: …Oooh. Guess we could, got nothing to do either way.
There’s a television with all kinds of programming, and got a cup of coffee. A situation that’s far from reaching a point where we’re so bored, there’s nothing else to talk about.
Soyogu: (...Under the guise of the conversation dying, that commercial is probably why he suggested it.)
Soyogu: (That part of him hasn’t changed, huh.)
Haruhi: Shinkai, you still at it? With martial arts.
Soyogu: (...Ah. This guy doesn’t know, huh.)
Soyogu: Nope. Quit.
Haruhi: … I see.
Haruhi: But if you quit, aren’t you like, still way too freakin’ huge?
Soyogu: …
Haruhi: You’re the only guy I could pick out of the crowd before I even entered.
Soyogu: …Haha.
Soyogu: Guess so.
A class reunion where we saw each other for the first time in several years. It’s all what I did while in middle school, but just a few years later I called it quits with “that”.
Even after finding out, there wasn’t a single “why” or “when” coming out of him. Neither was there a strange air of concern.
He catches on quickly, which is exactly why he doesn’t carelessly interfere. From all the way back then, he’s still the same as ever— a guy with a good head on his shoulders.
If this world, the “world” of that time back then, was full of guys like him—
A thought that still crosses my mind from time to time.
Soyogu: (...Well. No meaning in mulling about it.)
Soyogu: (That in itself is gonna come with its own fair share of troubles.)
Haruhi: Anything you feel like playing?
Soyogu: Which one was that one again— the second one from the right, the go-kart looking one.
Haruhi: That’s Meri-kart.
Soyogu: I sometimes play that one ‘cuz of Shinobu bringing it with him when we’re drinking at the dorms.
Haruhi: C’mon man, that’s just drunk driving.
Soyogu: Now that you mention it— can’t say I ever drove sober.
Haruhi: Oh well, we’ll settle with this then. Anyone who wants steering assist?
Soyogu: Lemme drive normally. Keep the boring stuff like cutting corners outta it.
Haruhi: Eh. That’s fine but… isn’t losing what makes it boring?
Soyogu: Got some nerve in ya to say that.
Haruhi: Y’know, you look like the kinda guy to keep going until he wins, which is a freakin’ pain.
Soyogu: Obviously. Whether it’s a fight or whatever else, the last man standing wins.
Soyogu: If you lose, get ready to have protein on the menu everyday starting next year.
Haruhi: …I remembered that I have some urgent business so back to my room I gotta go.
Soyogu: Getting cold feet now or what?
There’s no point in regretting it.
Even if I threw away this power, it wouldn’t bring anything back.
That’s why I decided to become strong.
That I don’t “end up” being protected by anyone anymore.
That I can carry the burden of all I have lost, and all I have taken, on my back.
If ego is what keeps this hell going, then I’ll take my own ego and smash through it, continuing to move forward.
Leaving a lingering trail, the color of tire marks engraving into my eyes.
[Break My Case] R Card Story - Taiga Tsukimoto "An assortment of blessings"
Translation by akewanchan.

Taiga: (Eggs, shrimp, kombu… Okay, that should do it.)
Mikado: Fufu, getting stuff to make osechi?
Taiga: ! Mikado-san.
Mikado: Sorry for like, suddenly calling out to you. I was at that kimono shop over there, looking around for a New Year’s kimono.
Mikado: Once I left, I saw a familiar face busy with shopping, and just had to come say hi.
Taiga: That’s what you were up to, huh.
Taiga: If I’m not mistaken, that store over there is an old one that has been in business since the Edo period.
Mikado: Correct.
Mikado: We’re talking about kimonos here, you know. So, thought it’d be a great idea to ask a vintage store with a long history behind it!
A laughing Mikado-san comfortably spreads his sleeves.
An eye-catching, stylish vermillion fabric adorned with somewhat large flowers in full bloom— a combination that makes you nod your head at how well it suited Mikado-san.
Taiga: It suits you perfectly without a doubt.
Mikado: My, thank you. Being complimented so straightforwardly is making me blush.
Mikado: Though, Taiga-chan, you totally look wonderful yourself.
Mikado: This deep purple paired with a black long haori is stunning, it’s giving off a dignified impression.
Taiga: …You think so?
Mikado: Of course, a kimono in that kind of color is hard to pull off.
Mikado: Take more pride in yourself for being able to wear it without any reservations.
Taiga: Thank you very much. It gives me confidence to hear that coming from you, Mikado-san.
Mikado: Geez, Taiga-chan. That's exactly what makes you cute.
Taiga: C-cute…?
Mikado: Fufu, reacting like that is just the cherry on top.
Mikado: Oh, actually I must apologize. I interrupted your shopping without meaning to.
Taiga: It’s fine, all that is left is to pay so it’s not a problem at all.
Taiga: While I’ve been making osechi for the house since around the end of the year, these turned out to be more popular than expected, so thought to make some more while I’m at it.
Mikado: Oho. You often hear about osechi being left over, but to want seconds is quite a feat in itself.
Taiga: It surprised me too.
Taiga: Especially from Haruhi, when he’s far from the type to eat that much.
Mikado: Then that means it has to be like, mouthwateringly delicious.
Mikado: Maybe I’ll also have to start volunteering as Sei’s assistant if that's how it is.
Taiga: Haha, there’s no need to justify it, you’re always welcome to come over and hang out.
Taiga: …Though, this works out. Since I already had plans to make a bunch of them, I’ll bring some over to Aporia as a New Year’s greeting.
Mikado: Really? Now that makes me sooo happy!
Mikado: Though, it did sound like I was begging you to, I’m sorry for that.
Taiga: Nah, if anything it makes it feel like it’s worth it to go that far.
Mikado: That’s great then. I’ll be waiting with much anticipation for Taiga-chan’s osechi.
Taiga: Thank you.
Seeing Mikado-san with such a pleasant, broad smile made me feel more refreshed than before.
It’s going to be a wonderful year.
—With that feeling welling up in my chest, I held the basket of ingredients close to my heart.
