AI KOSAKA: “The company extended the job offer to you? That’s great news. Congratulations.”

YUZURU KISE: Thank you.

You were always ready to lend a sympathetic ear whenever I confided in you; for that, you have my boundless gratitude. I owe this to you.

AI KOSAKA: “That was just me being a busybody. Don’t mention it.”

“And let me correct you there: you’ve earned this job in your own right. Be proud of yourself.”

YUZURU KISE: I will.

AI KOSAKA: “Sorry, I have something scheduled after this. I’d better get going.”

“Yuzuru, if anything comes up… No, what I meant to say was, feel free to reach out whenever you wish.”

YUZURU KISE: Of course. I’ll get in touch again once everything settles down. …Thank you for your time.

After hanging up the phone call that left me feeling warm and comforted inside, I let my gaze linger to the paperwork spread out on my desk.

There's my Withholding Tax Slip, Employment Insurance Card, and Pension Handbook, among other things… I thoroughly checked each document to make sure I hadn’t missed anything.

YUZURU KISE: Great. All that’s left is to get a medical certificate, then I’m all set.

I glanced at the clock as I did some light stretching. The second hand seemed to be moving awfully slower than it’s supposed to.

YUZURU KISE: (…I’m not used to having this much time on my hands.)

I couldn't help but let out a wry smile at myself for being taken aback by how polarly different time seemed to flow now in contrast to the fast-paced career and life I’ve left behind.

YUZURU KISE: Oh, I know. Now’s the perfect opportunity to cross off everything I have on my bucket list.

I took out my phone and opened the travel agency website I’ve had bookmarked for so long.

YUZURU KISE: (It’s always been a dream of mine to embark on a nationwide foodie tour.)

I could think of a couple more things to add to my plans.

I felt blessed that my heart flutters with excitement at all these little things to look forward to.

A few days passed.

SEI OKIYA: Dear me. Is that you, Yuzuru?

YUZURU KISE: Mr. Sei! Hi. Fancy seeing you here.

Oh, let me guess: Did you come here for a physical exam, too?

SEI OKIYA: No, I was here to visit an acquaintance admitted to this hospital.

And you had a physical exam appointment, you say? My oh my, what impeccable timing.

YUZURU KISE: Huh?

SEI OKIYA: Given that physical exams require a patient to fast prior, I imagine you must be famished by now, no?

YUZURU KISE: You got me there. As much as I’m embarrassed to admit, I am feeling ravenous.

Part One

I was preparing for the dress-up event with a few Aporia members.  Thinking I was just about done, I looked up. Mika-san was looking this way, and our eyes met.

Mikado: Ito, Urara. Do you have a minute?

Urara: Hah?

Ito: Of course. Is something wrong?

Mikado: A little while ago, we talked about adding inste-worthy stuff to the menu, right? Once you're done with your current task, I'd like you two to go to Chinatown and gather some ideas. What do you think? 

Ito: I don’t mind, but…

Urara: Why do I gotta get dragged into this too? She’s not a child, she can go by herself. 

Ito: (I thought so…)

Mikado: There were a lot of good stores when we went out shopping the other day, right Urara? 

Your job is to be her guide. Look around and find some ideas together while you're at it.

Since you’re not a child either, the least you can do is lead the way, no? 

Urara: Tch.

Manami-san didn't say anything further and went back to his work.

By the time I reached a stopping point in my work, he was already waiting at the entrance. 

Urara: Hurry up. I’m gonna leave you behind. 

Ito: Sorry, I’ll be right there.

Just as we were about to step outside, a familiar face walked into the store. 

Sei: Oya, Yashiro-san and Urara-kun. Are you two heading out somewhere?

Urara: Hah? ‘S got nothing to do with you. 

Manami-san cut off the conversation short, but Sei-san smiled without flinching.

Sei: I see… So you’re going out to look for ideas to add to the menu.

Urara: Huh? 

Ito: (Eh.)

Sei: Fufu. I was aware that you two were considering something like that, so I just took a guess. 

Sei: Judging from your reactions, it looks like I hit the mark.

I was stunned into silence, and Manami-san was visibly put off. It might have just been me, but he seemed to be more on edge than usual, keeping a noticeable amount of distance from Sei-san.

Urara: Oi, ignore him. Let’s go. 

Sei: Are you going to leave? And here I was, about to offer a special suggestion to you two.

Urara: …What is it. 

Sei: A suggestion about pairing a menu set with Huangshan Maofeng tea.

Urara: …Huangshen Maofeng tea?

Sei: It's a type of Chinese tea. It has a rich aroma and a mellow sweetness. 

Sei: Just by pairing it with a menu set will make it all the more splendid.

Ito: I see. It might be a good idea to go find a menu that pairs well with that tea then.

Urara: Whatever.

Sei: If that’s settled, let’s head out immediately.

Urara: What? Why the hell are you—

Sei: I’m the only one who knows the taste of this tea, after all.

Urara: Don’t fuck with me!

In the end, the three of us would end up going together… While looking for menu ideas, I couldn't help but notice Manami-san's behavior. 

Urara: Hah…

Ito: (It feels like he’s more on edge than usual.)

The moment his sullen eyes widened just a bit… 

Sei: Oya. Urara-kun seems to take an interest in those panda buns over there.

Urara: !

I followed Sei-san's gaze and spotted a store selling cute panda buns. 

Sei: Do you perhaps like pandas?

Urara: H-Hah?!

Urara: Why the hell do I have to tell you something like that? 

Ito: (He’s not denying it…)

Ito: Um… Since we’re here, should we give them a try?

Sei: Of course.

Urara: I don’t want any.

Sei: Is that so… Well then, Ito-san and I shall go get some. 

After we bought the panda buns, Sei-san started eating immediately.

Sei: The rich sweetness of the red bean paste and the faint aroma of sesame stirs up my appetite—

Urara: So annoying. Just shut up and eat.

Sei: Oya…

Ito: (Yeah, it really is sweet and delicious.)

Ito: Panda buns seem like a good idea. They look cute too, so it might be an inste-worthy menu item.

Urara: …Idiot. It wouldn’t work. 

Ito: Huh?

Urara: Huangshen Maofeng tea’s sweet, so the whole set’s gonna be nothing but fucking sweet. 

Ito: (That’s true…)

Sei: There’s no need to worry.

Sei: I happen to have another tea recommendation. 

Sei: It’s called Anxi Tieguanyin tea, and it pairs well with the sweetness.

Sei: If it’s with this, then we can keep the panda buns into consideration. What do you think? 

Urara: …

Urara: …Do what you want. 

Ito: I think that’s a great idea too.

Ito: (Not just because they’re cute and delicious, but also because Manami-san seemed interested in them. I’m glad Sei-san suggested it.)

Sei: Well then, let's use this as a basis to suggest our original 'panda buns' to everyone. 

Sei: I will buy a few more as reference materials, so please wait. 

Urara: Hurry up and go.

Sei-san went to line up at the storefront. Manami-san let out a deep sigh as we watched him go.

Urara: …So annoying—

Ito: Are you feeling tired? I’m sorry for making you tag along. 

Urara: Hah? Don’t mess with me. There's no way I'd get tired from something like this. That guy’s just creepy as hell. 

Ito: Um…

Urara: ’M talking about Okiya. He’s fucking shady as hell.

Urara: People like that're usually trouble. Nothing good ever comes from getting involved with people like him. 

Ito: (So that’s why he was acting a bit different from usual.)

Sei: Sorry to keep you waiting. 

Ito: Welcome back, Sei-san. 

Sei: Here is one for Urara-kun too. Apparently, this one isn’t as sweet. 

Urara: Told you I don’t want it. Don’t do anything unnecessary. You eat it.

Sei: I politely refuse. It is because I bought this specifically for you, Urara-kun.

Urara: …

Ito: (Ah…)

With a displeased look on his face, Manami-san took the small wrapped bundle handed to him. Though he usually has a rough personality, seeing him carefully settle the bundle into his arms made me smile, just a little.

[Break My Case] SSR Card Story - Taiga Tsukimoto "INDIVISIBLE"

Part 1

Taiga: (Wonder what I should make for dinner today.)

I pondered about that while walking around in the fruit section.

Then I ended up stopping in front of a shelf displaying seasonal fruits such as persimmon and pomegranates, as well as a variety of other fruits you’d find throughout the year.

Taiga: (Apples and whatnot— all sorta fruits you can buy regardless if they’re in season or not nowadays.)

Observing the shelf while thinking about how much effort farmers put into this stuff, a certain fruit caught my attention.

Taiga: Cherries, huh.

Taiga: (Those are nice. But maybe I oughta go for something more in season—)

Taiga: (...Actually, that reminds me.)

Suddenly, from the depths of my mind, the image of a lively dinner table from god knows when flashed before my eyes.

Taiga: (Brought ‘em out for these guys before, didn’t I. Ate them all up while going on how yummy it was.)

Taiga: (That said, don’t think they’d eat ‘em if they had to prepare it themselves. Wonder if they even get the chance to eat something like this nowadays…) 

Taiga: (Nah, it’s none of my business to mull over it.)

I gently shook my head and reached out for the cherries on the shelf.

???: You there, hold it!

Taiga: !

Taiga: …Are you, talking to me?

Taiga: Got any room left? I received it as a gift so, wanna take a small bite?

I brought out the refrigerated cherries after dinner, and Haruhi turned towards me with a curious look on his face.

Haruhi: Huuuh, from who?

Taiga: Someone from around the neighborhood. An elderly lady.

Haruhi: The heck, what she got to do with you?

Taiga: She called out to me when I was picking out fruits at the supermarket.

“My husband’s receiving a great deal of fruits as get-well gifts while he’s hospitalized, so if you’re planning on getting cherries then I got you covered.”

“I keep handing ‘em out here and there but I just can’t get rid of it all, and every time someone drops by it just keeps piling up, it’s putting me quite the bind.”

Taiga: …Seems to be the case. I gratefully accepted it.

Haruhi: Isn’t gramps, like, way too popular?

Taiga: Yep, he’s held in pretty high regard.

Then a door opened, and Sei-san, who quickly returned to his own room after dinner, poked his head out.

Sei: Oh my, such a bittersweet lovely fragrance in the air.

Taiga: Sei-san, are you done with work?

Sei: Yes, I’ve reached a point where I can take a breather.

Taiga: Then how about we eat this together with everyone here. I received these today.

Sei: I’d be most delighted to. From whom was it?

Taiga: Y’see…

Sei: My goodness. What a wonderful twist of fate.

Sei: That being said, it’s quite unheard of for Taiga to accept such an offer.

Haruhi: For real. Even though he’s the type to refuse even if it kills him.

Taiga: (But genuinely, she was damn forceful with it…) 

Old lady: So, was thinking of keeping the melon for my grandchildren. But you can take everything else! The mangoes are great, lemme tell ya.

Taiga: Still, this much is—

Taiga: (I couldn’t refuse and even ended up getting dragged till her house, but handing me a paulownia box full of stuff just like that, I can’t…!)

Taiga: At least let me repay you in some way.

Old lady: What are you saying, young man! I told you I’m handing these out since I don’t need ‘em!

Taiga: M-my apologies.

Old lady: It won’t fit in this shopping bag. Lemme bring out a bigger one.

Taiga: T-then! The cherries! I will gladly take just the cherries off your hands….!

Old lady: But you live with the three of you, don’t you wanna eat more than that?

Taiga: No, it’s okay, it’s the thought that counts! 

Old lady: Really now…? Alright then.

Taiga: (Thank god…)

Old lady: Do you usually cook for everyone?

Taiga: Eh. Uh, yes, yes I do.

Old lady: Hm, I see. Now that’s love.

Taiga: Uh……?

Old lady: You see, if you don’t have any fruit lying around, then that’s just how it is. Besides, if you want to enjoy eating these, you have to wash and peel— stuff you gotta go out of your way for.

Taiga: ……

Old lady: So, taking the trouble to go buy fruit and then feed ‘em some, lemme tell ya, it’s rooted in love.

Old lady: It shows how close you all are.

Taiga: (Love, huh.)

Haruhi: Mh, these are sweeter than the ones we had before.

A few days after that, autumn was in full swing. On the way home, red leaves that had been carried by the wind from somewhere fell on my shoulder.

Taiga: (I’ll clean ‘em up later. First I gotta put this away.)

I picked up this heavy plastic bag with somewhat large pears in it and opened the fridge.

Taiga: Huh? This is—

Several figs that weren’t there this morning were scattered about as is. I unconsciously tilted my head in confusion, and heard footsteps coming down the stairs.

Haruhi: Ah, these. I put ‘em in.

Taiga: You did?

Haruhi: Yup. Got ‘em as a gift. Just a guess, but I probs encountered the same OP granny you ran into before.

Haruhi slipped through my arms and grabbed a gaudy plastic bottle from the open fridge. 

Haruhi: Went to the supermarket to look for this, and while I was looking around at fruits, I got suddenly called out to. 

Haruhi: TL;DR, “Can’t finish these up so take ‘em off my hands”. She was talking to me but I just couldn’t get a word in, so I did as she told me and brought ‘em bake home.

Taiga: Haha, I can imagine it. It was probably her again, I think.

Taiga: Told ya, no way you’d win against her tenacity.

Haruhi: That granny, said her piece, shoved these in my hands, went all like “Got plans so gotta bounce!”. She totally wasn’t letting me speak on purpose.

Taiga: Really? I was able to talk with her a little…

Taiga: Maybe she knows you’re the kind of guy that’s ready to fire off comebacks and end up declining her the moment you open your mouth. 

Haruhi: Changing her strats depending on her opponent? She’s way too OP, dude, like, is she some kinda seasoned warrior, or what?

Taiga: Without a doubt that she seemed used to it, but… you’re exaggerating it.

I rolled my eyes, and put the figs together with the pears in the same bag, and closed the fridge.

Haruhi: Anyways, we got even more fruit now. Is that also from the notorious granny?

Taiga: These are from clients at Aporia. It was given as a gift, and since there were plenty, I took a bunch of them back home. 

Haruhi: Good thing I didn’t end up mindlessly buying whatever, then.

Taiga: Buying whatever? …Actually, why were you in the fruits isle—

Sei: I’m back home. Oh my, you're both here.

Saying that, Sei-san entered the living room while holding a paper bag.

Taiga: Welcome back. What’s with the bag?

Sei: I went to the department store to take care of something, yet I found myself tempted by an aroma.

Sei: If you’d all like to, how about eating these together tonight?

Taiga: And these are… some good-looking grapes.

Haruhi: We opening a fruit stall or what?

I almost found myself laughing at Haruhi’s remark, but then I remembered the elderly lady’s voice full of endorsement, and I kept my mouth shut.

Taiga: (“It’s rooted in love.”)

Taiga: (...I can’t selfishly assume their feelings, neither do I intend to.)

Taiga: (But as for me, I just think spending time like this after dinner isn’t bad at all.)

And looking at it now, that’s how things turned out to be. I wonder, was it the same for them? —Again, I am not under the belief that it’s exactly like that. But, if it was, it would make me happy. 

Taiga: (At any rate, these days of us three being surrounded by fruits is gonna keep going for a while.)

I was supposed to hold it back, but I couldn’t stop my face from subconsciously lighting up.

Haruhi and Sei-san pointed it out, and teased me with a smile of their own.
