Any of you desperate to know God’s will? Maybe you’re in high school and unsure if that girl or guy is His will; whether you’re in college and unsure which major is His will; or you’ve graduated and you’re trying to decode the elusive will of God to decide on a job. Can I just say something that I wish I had known a long time ago? Stop looking for God’s will. Be God’s will. Whenever we read about God’s will in the New Testament, it’s always about who we are. Be thankful. Be pure. Be wise. Be holy. Do you want to know God’s will? This is it: Be a person whose heart and life is consistent with the Gospel. Then all of your decisions will be in God’s will.

“My wife passed away last January. We’d been married for 62 years. You caught me at a time when I’ve been thinking a lot about love because I’m reading Shakespeare’s sonnets. The definition of love is elusive, which is why we write about it endlessly. Even Shakespeare couldn’t touch it. All the greatest love stories just seem to be about physical attraction. Romeo and Juliet didn’t know ifthey liked the same books or movies. It was just physical. After 62 years, it becomes something different entirely. My wife used to say: ‘We are one.’ And believe me, she was not the type of person to overstate something. Now that she’s gone, I realize how right she was. So much of our lives were linked. We were very physical and affectionate. But we also shared every ritual of our life. I miss her every time I leave a movie and can’t ask for her opinion. Or every time I go to a restaurant and can’t give her a taste of my chicken. I miss her most at night. We got in bed together at the same time every night.”

When we can confront ourselves truly as we are in the all-revealing presence of God, we can begin to be liberated from the lies we believe. We can see where we were just fooling ourselves. Such a confrontation is completely uncomfortable and downright agonizing, but afterward, we can be free. The chains loosen. There is clarity. There is joy. Honesty is freedom.

2016 : CHARACTER I pray for a renewed spirit. A heart that yearns for the Lord. I don't want resolutions, but I want to deepen my relationship with the Lord and through that see my character change. Honestly, the more time I spend with you the more positive change I'll see. There has been so many different challenges that I've faced this year, but Lord I know that you have a plan. Even when I don't believe it or trust you, you're still fighting for me. More hunger, more yes, more passion, more compassion, more yearn, more love, more faith, and more You.
