low activity. this blog is one of the three that i have , and it’s not the main one. i'm usually on my shimizu blog , @shimzus instead. i also work full-time and live in japan , so with what little free time i have and with the weirdness of my timezone , i can’t always be online. replies might be slow and my ims might come late. all i ask is for your patience.

private. like my other blogs , this one is private. i will only write with mutual followers. i'm picky about who i follow—— if you’re from a fandom i'm unfamiliar with , don’t often write haikyuu!! verses , or frankly aren’t someone i already know , then i probably won’t follow you. it’s nothing personal , but like i said , i'm low activity and i try to keep my blogs manageable with low follow and draft counts.

other. anon is off. no , it will never be turned on. i love and encourage plotting and am pretty free with giving out my discord to mutuals , so if you ever want it then we can plot some magic there B). i’m also currently living in japan and studying for a japanese language proficiency exam. i try to write with the culture in mind , but at the end of the day i’m just a foreigner here and no expert. still , if you have fan comics you want translated , i'm down to get some translation practice in , and i can probably tell you about the way your character speaks in japanese !

was just thinking that akaashi isn’t the type of person to recite lines from literature to anyone. he wouldn’t write you a poem, and he wouldn’t send you any pre-existing writing to convey his feelings. he keeps his writing private, and i think he thinks of literature in the same way. it’s his safe space. it’s his personal interest-- not something he uses to connect with other people, and definitely not something he likes sharing openly. it’s just for him, so it’s special.

of all the ways that bokuto-san has influenced akaashi’s life in strange, mostly unwarranted ways, this has got to be one of the worst. and not because it’s a terrible thing… mostly, he’s just concerned about how his senpai found out that he had reconnected with tsukishima-kun, and how he’d then thought of it as his duty to make sure that they kept spending time together.

at least he doesn’t realize they’ve been—— is it flirting, or just intellectual foreplay?—— akaashi doesn’t know. but he’s grateful that bokuto-san doesn’t seem to have the perceptiveness to understand the subtleties of their relationship, either. still, he’d effectively given them a premise for a—— akaashi hesitates to say “date,” because the circumstances are weird—— so, an “outing” will suffice.

it definitely caught him off-guard when last week bokuto-san appeared at his apartment, knocking so eagerly until it seemed like the door come off its hinges. that in itself isn’t out of the realm of normalcy for their relationship, but pushing a pair of escape room tickets into his hand and urging him to take tsukishima-kun is. akaashi tried to question him, but was met with only the lousy explanation: “’cause you’re smart, and so is tsukkun! go do it!”

he’s never done an escape room. frankly, he’s not sure tsukishima-kun. has, either. if these tickets hadn’t been forced upon him, he probably wouldn’t have gone out of his way to try it, but here he is nonetheless.

an all-nighter right before doesn’t much help, either, and it’s only then that akaashi puts two and two together and realizes that in his exhausted stupor that he had put his t-shirt on backwards in the morning. the tag sticks out in the front and scratches his chin, and he screws his eyes shut with a sharp exhale. embarrassing.

“  do you mind turning around while i fix this?  ”  he doesn’t bother to point to the tag that now feels as though it’s sticking two feet out of his collar instead of two centimeters. tsukishima-kun is so perceptive that he probably noticed it before akaashi did, so there’s no need to draw extra attention.  “  no offense, but sometimes when you look at me like that i think i look even more pitiful.  ”

akaashi counts himself lucky to have found a seat on the train this morning. he doesn’t mind standing , of course—— and most days , that’s the reality—— but it does feel like a small relief when there are seats available and no need to forfeit his to an elderly person or pregnant woman. he’s free to sink into it comfortably , bundled against the persistent chill of winter in tokyo and the cold that seeps down into the subway stations , and pressed flush against the heaters installed beneath the chairs. 

the lull of the train , rocking gently back and forth along the tracks , and the heating turned on high makes him a bit drowsy. akaashi doesn’t normally sleep well , and closing his eyes on the morning transit isn’t such a big deal. it’s what all salarymen do. he finds himself subconsciously doing so now , urged by the movement of the train , the soft hiss of air as the doors open and shut , and the crisp jingle played at each station. his eyes close , his lips part to breathe , and his head ...

falls to the side. his temple hits something hard—— a shoulder , he realizes a second later—— and it gives him the same knee-jerk reaction that he might feel if he were dreaming of falling off a cliff. akaashi’s eyes fly open and his posture straightens upright and erect. he’s stiff as a board , as if one more move will draw attention to the fact that he’d been the bastard who falls asleep on people on the subway. gingerly , he clears his throat , turns to glance at his side , and bows his head in a polite apology.  “  ... sorry.  ”

“  oh ...  ”  the sound slips past his lips unintentionally and falls to the floor , just like the ice cubes from the machine dispenser in the hotel hallway he hadn’t been able to catch. although a reaction like ‘ oh ’ is much nicer ( cleaner—— it doesn’t leave little puddles of water in the carpet or make him flinch when he has to pick it up and finds a long black hair attached ) , akaashi is certain that the first thing one would notice in this situation is , instead , the bucket of ice in his hands filled to the brim , and the many cubes scattering the floor like little white slugs. 

this is not how he wants to be seen by other teams at the national stage. bokuto-san will surely make fun of this if he hears about it : his kouhai akaashi , standing in the hallway on two pale legs , dressed in a pair of exercise shorts and thick winter socks , staring down a possible opponent after having just dropped half a bucket of ice on the ground because the machine moved faster than he anticipated. it’s not a flattering look , and akaashi grits his teeth quietly with remorse. he’s from tokyo ... why did they have to get a hotel for the tournament , where all the other teams happen to be staying , too ?

“  ... that’s mine ,  ”  he says as if it isn’t obvious , gesturing with his gaze to the ice. well , it’s not like he’s going to use it now , though.

   “  ah,  akaashi - san,  you’re just in time,”  he says.   it’s ten minutes before closing but that doesn’t bother him.   “  i’m trying something new to add to the menu.  ”   usually,  it was atsumu’s job to taste test things before the final decision was made but this was a special thing.   “  halloween is soon,  so i was thinking of adding animal shaped onigiri for a limited time.   here’s the first one ——  ”   the hands that were busy shaping the rice are finally finished,  placing it on a plate before sprinkling some onigiri shreds on top,  then giving it a gentle slide in akaashi’s direction.   “  it’s a cat.  the filling is the same.   what do you think?  ”   @akshis​

ah ... that’s right. halloween. akaashi stares at the rice ball in front of him with empty , tired eyes , and tries to recall when he’d forgotten that it was already that time of year. is it ... october now ? once the deadlines all start to blur together , he never knows when one month ends and another begins.

he sinks into a seat , drooping over the counter in silent exhaustion. as his posture falls , so does his head , and akaashi slips lower and lower until his chin nearly touches the counter and he’s almost eye-to-eye with the cat in front of him. then he realizes he has to give an opinion—— one which , unfortunately , comes off a bit strong.   “   the filling is the same ... then isn’t it just extra work to shape it differently ? the taste is what matters more , right ...   ”   the last part seems to be a rhetorical question , which he comments to himself quietly.   “   i guess you could get more customers this way , though ...   ”

why is he here , again ? akaashi sits at the low table in the izakaya with horribly erect posture , his legs kept tightly together and his hands splayed politely over his knees. he looks like a child about to be in trouble for something , awaiting some sort of ill news or scolding for his behavior. even though that’s not the case , he is in a bit of an awkward situation.

it’s not he who was accepted to a professional volleyball team. akaashi works in an office under fluorescent lights that make his eyes hurt , not in a grand gymnasium under bright spotlights that brighten a full-length court. he eats cold convenience store food , not proper nutritionally balanced athlete meals. and he spends his free time sleeping or doing overtime work ( an inevitable when you work with udai-san , who hates deadlines ) , not going to the gym to bulk up.

and yet , still , he was invited to celebrate. ... bokuto-san really doesn’t understand boundaries , which in some ways is as much a gift as it is a curse. akaashi is acutely aware of the fact that he shouldn’t really be here for this celebratory team outing , but he is nonetheless. and he thinks that probably ... it’s because bokuto-san is hard to refuse when he gets going. akaashi couldn’t refuse him when he pressed so hard , and it’s likely the case that his team couldn’t refuse him when he announced he’d be inviting his kouhai from high school , too.

so here he is , still in his suit from work , his briefcase propped up against the wall behind him , feeling horribly out of place. once again , he extends his apologies to the group , keeping his hands on his knees as he bows gently.   “   um ... pardon the interruption.   ”   he can only assume that bokuto-san didn’t apologize for doing something unexpected like this , so it falls on him to make the proper sorry.
