Episode 4 of BBC’s Les Misérables drama had quite a lot of content packed into the span of an hour, much of that content receiving largely negative reviews (yes Marius wet dream scene, I’m talking about you) from fans of the book and musical. While there are many flaws within episode 4 that I could ramble on about for pages, I feel as though most of my thoughts have already been stated by fellow fans. Instead, I want to focus in on one character and how they were presented to the audience. So, buckle your seat-belts and get ready for my rant on Enjolras and how they failed at presenting a revolutionary.

i think turlough is doing a perfect job of playing brick!grantaire but the trouble is ever other character is so horrible there’s no good or hope that he’s counteracting, so his character is ruined

Another thing I was thinking about re: BBC Les Mis, is how Andrew Davies uses brutality? Because like. We see Thenardier beating Madame Thenardier in front of others, which frankly is a weird use of brutality even though he IS brutal (I mean, dang, he makes his daughter break a window with her hand later on, like, damn), and we also see Madame Thenardier chasing Cosette around with a belt, which while totally a thing I’d believe, there’s also a jeering crowd? AND we had to see Fantine’s teeth removal in this awful, gory detail. AND we had to see a convict get executed. Don’t get me wrong, there’s so much brutal stuff that happens in Les Mis, the brutality of society is a big part of the point, but I often feel like Andrew Davies isn’t trying to show us the common brutality of society at the time, but more like he’s just trying to shock us? Like brutality for brutality’s sake, instead of using it to hit and drive the deeply emotional beats of the novel. 

Like, for instance, when Valjean goes to Arras, you see the convicts getting the iron collars put around their necks. This has almost no significance other than to be brutal, but you know would have really driven it home emotionally? If he maybe had shown us for instance, the bit where Valjean first gets the iron collar put on him and cries like in the brick! Cause it’s the last time he cries for a REALLY LONG TIME, and then him seeing that later on would be So Much. Like sure, we see him with the iron collar in Toulon, but it still just doesn’t resonate the way I feel like something like that might have? 

I dunno, I just feel like if you’re going to show brutality, make the brutality matter to the larger theme and point of the text you’re adapting or the story you’re telling. Andrew Davies seems to get that yes, there’s lots and lots of brutal stuff in Les Mis, but he doesn’t seem to understand the core of WHY, and also that the themes of the novel are fighting against that brutality. It’s why he’s gotten Valjean so wrong at so many points (other than his scenes with little Cosette this episode). Because Valjean has seen and experienced SO MUCH brutality, and yet because of the bishop, and because of who he was before prison, who he is at his core, he’s a quiet, kind, sweet man, and not this Shouty Weirdo who kicks a desperate mother out of his factory. It’s like Davies is trying to say “oh, he falls prey to the brutality he experienced” but the point of the book is that HE DOES NOT DO THAT. Anyway, that’s my slightly incoherent Ted Talk.

what les amis do when they’re bored? 💛

Enjolras: He hates to admit it, but when he’s bored he watches Glee. Only three people know (Grantaire, Courf, and Ferre) and he wants to keep it that way

Grantaire: He doesn’t get bored. Even when he’s just sitting there doing nothing, his mind is a million miles away and he’s internally debating with himself on various topic ranging from philosophy to which player in Mario Kart is best

Courfeyrac: A bored Courf is an annoying Courf- he behaves like a five-year-old and gets all pouty. He always cheers up soon though when he remembers that he is an Adult and can do what he wants, so he usually ends up getting ice cream with Joly and Bossuet

Combeferre: Combeferre rarely gets bored, but when he does, he likes to call someone and play Monopoly with them (never Enjolras though, or else he won’t stop preaching about the evils of capitalism). Combeferre is a Monopoly GOD and so he always wins

Jehan: When Jehan is bored, they like to take a walk to a nearby park and just sit with their notebook and sketch what they see, even if it’s freezing cold or raining. Some of their best watercolors have happened when they were bored

Joly: There happens to be a cat cafe just down the street from his apartment, so whenever he’s bored, he just goes there and plays with the cats for an hour or two

Bossuet: Bossuet HATES working out, but he always feels bad when he doesn’t, so when he gets bored (about one or two times a day) he goes for a run or lifts weights for a little bit

Bahorel: Bahorel NEVER gets enough sleep because of his job and because his sleep schedule is a complete mess, so whenever he’s bored he takes a nap

Feuilly: When Feuilly is bored, he bakes. A lot. He bakes cookies, cakes, brownies, muffins, cupcakes, you name it. By the time he’s done with his baking frenzy, the little table in his apartment is COVERED with food. He always ends up donating most of it to the homeless shelter and saving a batch of cookies for the next Les Amis meeting
