can you help me with old school gyaru make up? every time i do it it never looks gyaru ߹𖥦߹
of course!! let's break it down~!
first thing's first, the two things that are really going to change to way your overall make looks are a tan and eyebrows. i personally don't think old school gyaru make can be readable as gyaru without a tan. that being said, that doesn't mean you need to be as dark as possible. being tan means different things depending on your natural skin tone. you can achieve a passable look with tanning lotions and bronzers.
next, eyebrows: per the trend at the time, most old school girls wore their brows on the thinner side with an arch.
as lovely as thick brows are, they're not going to read as gyaru and might be holding you back if legibility is your goal!
now let's talk about eyes. the thing with old school is that it doesn't really have all the visual markers that most people have come to associate with gyaru. it's quite simple in comparison to what you'd see worn by yamanba or kuro gyaru. blue eyeshadow was a favorite, but you might also see gals in plum purple, silver, or black shadows. a key feature of old school make is the use of white as a highlighter. they would often use it all the way up to the brow and right under the eye, but the amount varied depending on personal preference.
at this time, gals did not yet do a nose stripe. some were highlighting the bridge of their nose but it wasn't as strong or defined as you'll later see in yamanba. many of them also didn't wear contacts, and if they did, they tended to be more natural-looking.
lashes were long and more fluffy than the spikey, manga-like falsies that became popular in later substyles. some gals were experimenting with lower false lashes, but most just used mascara. they also weren't doing a droop yet.
now lips! of course, a white lip is iconic, especially for the more extreme and expressive gals. but they were also wearing nudes and frosted/pearly shades which were popular at the time. the lips were de-emphasized. like in later gyaru styles, the eyes are the most important aspect of the make.
with all of that in mind, i'm going to break it down even more to just the bare basics:
base: tan and matte. eyes: key point of the overall look. eyeshadow of your choice on the lid (i recommend blue!) keep the shadow rounded. don't bring it up too high nor too outward. add white or pearly shadow up to the brow bone. add white below the eye. eyeliner is simple. it can be extended a bit outward but follow the natural shape of the eye. black mascara on top and bottom lashes. fluffy or volumizing top falsies. add stickers or glitter below the eye if you so choose! lips: white, nude or frosted.
my biggest suggestion is to look at the actual make worn by gals at the time. try out a bunch of different variations to see which best suits you. while there are foundational features, the gals themselves were experimenting and personalizing their make at the time, so don't feel like you have to be boxed in.
good luck!! i hope this helps!!
