Iām in beautiful grocky surgery world and want to share a tiny snip of my first fic :)
heads up for indulgent organ stuff!
The procedure itself was simple. It was quick work identifying the offending organ in the pulsating mass of Grace's abdomen. It was swollen, throbbing angrily, out of place at the end of his [colon].Ā
With the damp hiss of a cauterizing snip it was over. I replaced the membrane covering the stump and gingerly rearranged the tube of writhing intestine.Ā
Grace had explained to me that gravity would do most of the work of rearranging his organs into their correct place if anything were displaced; that Earth surgeons, in his deeply unsettling terminology, "just kind of dump them back in there." I would do no such thing to the brilliant, resonant mass of pulp keeping Grace alive.Ā
I couldn't help but trace a claw so gently over the striation of teniae coli along the colon. I wished I had more time so I could sing to it properly, to thank it for its work and to wish it fast healing. I settled for a few notes of well-wishing before beginning the sutures. I admit I was sad to watch the wound close, the dampening effect reminding me of nothing so much as a human singer's mouth closing after a performance; the end of a song.
