“Well, she’s my baby and has really been my only company for the past 18 years” Evelyn admitted, but she gave Genevieve a soft smile. “Oh I’d love to, that’d be amazing, I don’t have any friends in the City..” she nodded and then gave a soft sigh “Well, what are you doing now? I’m not on call, I was just doing appointments but I could always call them off?” she offered.

       “That’s understandable.” She imagined that it was hard when it was only the two of them; Genevieve had the company and her work so it was never a massive issue for her. “Nothing. If you like. I can send these guys home, I’m sure that they’d appreciate that.” She gestured towards the two men that were stood a few feet away from her. Some would have said that she was just paranoid but it felt necessary when being out on the streets of Queens. Only when she felt comfortable enough would the people of Queens see her as someone who they could approach. “We could always catch up over a glass of wine?”

“I’m not handling it as well as I used to. Probably because Athena’s moved out to University now, I’m having stress at work then coming home to nothing and being left with the stress” she chuckled, even if her eyes were sad with the fact.  “Oh really? Well, what are you going to do in your spare time?If you need a friend I have some vacation time with my own job that needs to be taken. It’d be nice to catch up properly.”

       The other woman’s words did worry her slightly. “Stress isn’t good for you. You know that and after the past couple of weeks, I certainly know that too. It is hard when they first move out but you’ll get used to it.” However, it was very isolating but she had her husband. “We should definitely do something. Perhaps go out for a meal or some drinks to catch up?” Shrugging at her suggestions, Genevieve pulled a smile towards the other. She was more than willing to act as a distraction and she benefited from it as well; it was less time that she had to spend with him criticising. There may have been a time when she loved him and he loved her  but that had quickly faded when she had decided to move into politics. The woman wasn’t going to delude herself into thinking anything different. “If you ever need company and I’m in the city, you should let me know.”

Evelyn smiled brightly when she saw Genevieve and immediately came over, holding out her hands for the older woman “Oh well, you know how things are for me. Always busy and always intense. But otherwise well” she laughed softly, having been grabbing a quick lunch. “But look at you! And I’ve been watching how well you’ve been doing Mrs Senator.”

        “I must say, you do handle the pressure extremely well.” There was a time when Genevieve was the same but as she got older, she needed to slow things down; that was clear after the previous week in DC. “I’m glad to hear it.” Nodding, she gave the other a soft smile. “I try my best but I appreciate your support. In all honesty it’s all quite exhausting so I’ve signed off for a couple of weeks to keep myself in check.” Perhaps everything went a little too fast for her over these past couple of months and it wasn’t like her husband was being the most supportive. Genevieve was intelligent enough to know that other people had picked up on that, especially after he was absent for the cruise.

      After finishing up a lunch with one of her friends, Genevieve found herself walking down the street. Of course, her security detail weren’t far behind her; she knew that she couldn’t be too careful these days as political unrest made her a target. The woman saw no problem in spending her money were it was needed for private bodyguards. Catching a glimpse of Evelyn, the older blonde smiled. “Evelyn, dear. It’s been far too long since we’ve seen each other.” They had met at a few events earlier in the year but they never had much time to talk about usual things. “How’ve you been?”

While her countenance remained the same - neutral, if slightly frustrated -, Noor appreciated the sentiment behind the senator’s words. Unpleasant or overly demanding family members weren’t a new phenomenon and she usually did her best to be as understanding as possible since hospitals often had a funny effect on people. However, rationalizing getting snippy over a blanket while another patient - someone with family and friends of their own -  was receiving chest compression existed in a realm of its own. “Well, it does get exceptionally chilly in the unit,” she muttered, her voice laced with sarcasm that wasn’t directed at anyone in particular. “Oh? That sounds nice. Life must get very hectic for you.”  

        “It could have waited for a brief moment, yes? Some people have no patience and it winds me up the wrong way.” The woman nodded with conviction. Genevieve was a strategist who liked to control situations in the best possible way so didn’t appreciate those who rushed into things without giving them a second thought. “It does, yes. I’m actually taking a bit of a break right now. Not for long but my doctor said to give myself at least two weeks before going back there.” Perhaps now was a good time to fit seeing her family in. It wasn’t that she was neglectful like her husband had said in order to manipulate her, she was just a busy woman and as her children were all grown up, she didn’t see her career as being a problem.

“Uh– there’s no good answer to that one.” Reminded her of when people asked things like you don’t think I’m fat, do you? but she tried not to think of that. “D.C. could be fun, if you had a cute ass photoshoot with the cherry blossom trees and protested in front of the White House.” Pepper figured that wasn’t what a middle-aged white woman did in D.C., but oh well.

     “Well at least you’re honest.” The older blonde chuckled to herself before shooting her a smile. “Happy birthday and welcome to actual adulthood. Hopefully it will treat you well.” Genevieve’s nodding soon stopped when the girl seemed to paint THAT picture of her. “I think if I were doing that my district wouldn’t be too happy.” The woman did appreciate the strong position that she was in but everyone knew that she had spent thousands of money that came from the people on that cruise she had a couple of months ago... “It was for work, actually. Senator Genevieve Alderson.”

Blind dates were awful. Adrian wasn’t one to go out on them voluntarily but somehow someone always set him up with someone for some reason. It was all confusing and ended with the date getting their heart broken in the end. This time it was a woman, a young woman, called there by Adrian’s uncle. They’d apparently make a beautiful couple and produce many beautiful babies. Adrian wasn’t remotely excited about any of those aspects and while the date kept on yammering about her heritage and how she spoke five languages fluently, he was surfing the rest of the crowd with his eyes. He almost missed when the tiresome lady left for the toilet and that’s when he saw the opportunity to get away. “Wanna save me from the worst arranged date in history? I need a reason to leave.” He spoke to the person who had caught his eye when they were about to pass his table. “I’ll buy you a beer or whatever, just please get me out of here before I die of boredom.”

      “You’re thinking about leaving just like that?” Genevieve arched her brow towards the young male. She believed that the younger generation was lacking respect and this showed it. While it was okay to accept that things weren’t working out, communication was key to any interaction and escaping without saying a word was the easy way out, a coward’s way out. “I think you should have the decency to either stick it out as it can’t go on for long or to just say that she’s a lovely, intelligent young lady but you don’t feel like you have chemistry. You have to try to let people down easy.” The blonde was a politician, she knew all about that and playing the game but sometimes honesty was the best policy and she could hardly argue with that. “Just tell her the truth. You don’t know her so what harm can it do? Besides, I don’t drink beer.”

Noor rubbed the bridge of her nose as she struggled to remain calm and collected despite being quite irritated. Usually bookstores had the mystical power of making her feel a little bit better regardless the situation but clearly that wasn’t happening any time soon. The fact that she had managed to knock over a - blessedly small - book display wasn’t improving the situation or her mood. “Sorry about that,” she muttered to the person closest to her while cleaning up the mess. “I had a patient’s daughter berate me for not bringing her mother an extra blanket quickly enough for her liking. I would’ve been more understanding if she hadn’t popped her head into a room where I was literally performing CPR on another patient.” She paused, clearly not particularly pleased. The third night shift in the row was bound to have that effect. “I hope your day has been more pleasant than mine thus far.”

        The distinguished woman did jump slightly at the book being knocked over but after realising it wasn’t threatening she was quick to shrug it off. Politics was a hot topic at the moment and working in such a place did bring about anxiousness; she always made sure that her personal security had eyes on her at all times. “Sounds awful, I don’t know how you do it. Unfortunately, people do forget about prioritising your work and can be very demanding at the most inconvenient time. I can’t imagine what that must be like for you.” Shaking her head, Genevieve looked down, embarrassed for the daughter who felt the need to interrupt CPR for a simply BLANKET. Iit’s been fine, taking it easy this week.” The woman had spent the previous week in d.c and the stress had drained her. After taking a turn towards the end of the week, her doctor had advised her to take it easy so she found herself in a bookstore trying to decide on the most interesting read.

“I can’t believe I’m no longer a teen. I can’t believe I’m this old.” Pepper knew that sounded stupid, especially since almost everyone she knew was older, but she hadn’t expected to make it past eighteen, truthfully. And as unreal as her age currently felt, she could finally see years ahead. She adjusted the guitar case strap on her shoulder with a smile. “It’s cool, though.”

        Raising her eyebrows, Genevieve shook her head. “Dear, if you’re old what does that make me?” She had gotten to the age where she did feel different to when she was twenty; she couldn’t have always been this BORING. “mind you, i spent all last week in d.c and i am slightly drained.” It was listening to all of those OLD, white, boring men, she was sure of that one. Yes, the woman had grown up surrounded by luxury but she was aware of that and wouldn’t let ignorance claim her as a victim. Genevieve had strategy but she did care for people in her district, whether they believed that or not.

“God, can you believe that I’m gonna be a grandma again soon?” Jude leaned back in her seat, cigarette perched between her fingers. She’d had a slow day, mostly just trying to help Chris and Cory set up things for the kid, putting together cribs and furniture - she hadn’t done that kind of thing in years, not since her last grandchildren came along and her own kid needed help setting up a nursery. “I’ve got more than twelve grandkids already - at this point, I’m just glad that this one is coming after Christmas, because that’s one less gift I had to buy.”

       “Twelve?” Genevieve raised her eyebrows. She had children herself but no grandchildren. Her son was far too busy with his career and her daughter was off travelling the world doing goodness knows what. “That sounds really stressful. I struggle knowing what to get my two children for Christmas, yet alone twelve of their children. I believe congratulations are in order.” The woman smiled towards the other.

“Yeah but if you’re doing this for some sort of marketing campaign, then you might want to ease up. Because you’re looking unapproachable with it. Take a leaf out of Hillary Clinton’s book. Especially if this is the direction you’re hoping this trip is going to put you in one day, Ma’am. I’m no Campaign manager, but even I can spot that” Verity said, straight talking as always. “So yeah, I’m grateful and offering gratitude. But I was always told that something like a lunch was never free, so how can a whole trip be free?”

       People could not be bought, Genevieve knew that. This was about trust and it appeared to her that it was a mistake. Very few wanted to have a mundane conversation with her or even talk to her in general. How else was she supposed to integrate into Queens. “I appreciate the advice but I’m not here to talk politics. I will be living in Queens and thought this would be a good way to meet people. Unfortunately, I was mistaken as I’m currently stood here being questioned by you.” The woman wasn’t a robot even though she did have a calm temperament; she did have feelings of her own and honestly, she needed friends, ACTUAL friends but this proved that it wasn’t going to happen.

“Genevieve. Right.” Flynn hesitantly muttered under his breath. He didn’t feel like acting all buddies with the senator, that was never his intention and he never wanted to work closely with the people up there. He just didn’t think he would fit in. He’d only embarrass himself with his awkwardness and lack of manners. “I was just looking for the gym. I haven’t exercised whatsoever this morning.” Flynn said with a shrug. “You don’t have to.”

      It wasn’t hard to use one’s first name, no matter who they were. It seemed that the American people hated the sense of authority and power, or at least on this boat and Genevieve wanted to abolish that. “I can take you in that direction, if you like? It’s no trouble.” The woman was trying her best to be accommodating but it seemed that she wasn’t gelling well with others on board.

“Everywhere I go, I feel like I’m on the set of a music video and some asshole teen idol is gonna show up and start singing to me. It’s so annoying.”

        “No one forced you to come.” Genevieve interjected. People were so quick to complain when they had their own choices to make and had the ability to change it. “I believe it’s much more beautiful than what is featured in... those particular videos.”

“C’mon, love, take a seat.” His voice was somewhat thick, a barbed product of three shots he had already downed with ease. The bar wasn’t necessarily his favorite when it came to its aesthetic groove - a bit too tropical and cheery for his tastes - but none of that mattered when they could still serve him the great amount of booze he needed. “You look like you could use a shot - or thousands.”

       “As much as I would love to do that, I believe it counts as drinking on the job.” Genevieve wasn’t here to be questioned by the people, that was to come later. Why couldn’t they just enjoy it and speak to her about mundane topics? She missed that, being able to talk tripe for hours. “I don’t do well with shots.”

Did she, really? Heather had been around the man much longer but he had always been capricious and unreadable - he had to be, he had to keep altering the way he approached so she wouldn’t ever see what was about to come when the night arrived, it was another reason why she’d often chosen to turn herself into a shadow in the pit darkness of her attic - but she supposed the senator was just generalizing how he functioned around his peers, people like him. If that was the case, then her words might not stray too far away from the truth. “And what’s that, exactly? The game of the suits; appearing and disappearing, manipulating people to make them feel all confused and wonky?” She wondered if Genevieve even knew she was his daughter, wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t, her father only spoke of Caleb most of the time. “Yeah, it is. It’s my first time. It’s a - a bit more peaceful.” Sans her occasional nightmares. “Are you here with your family, too, or is this just strictly bussiness?”

        “Exactly.” Genevieve had no time for those sort of people but her husband was the one exception. Although he seemed to be supportive, he was trying to knock her down at every single moment. The woman had hoped that he wouldn’t be one of those men, insecure about power; it was her JOB and she didn’t see herself any higher than him so why should she? Granted, she had never been the doting mother, she was always the first to tell her children that they were wrong, but the fact that he used them as pawns by accusing of her being absent from most of their life was ridiculous. Genevieve had been there and now, they were all grown up. They didn’t need her. “I have no time for those sorts. Just a friendly smile on my part will do. All just pleasantries.” She wasn’t exactly fake, just preferred to avoid conflict or ease over it; she was skilled in that department. “No, I’m not. My children are grown and my husband had some errands to run.” He should have wanted to be there and she certainly wasn’t going to force him.

Heather’s mouth was half-way unlatched to spur out more remarks that would indicate and reminisce how much of a satirical fucking windbag she could be amongst the higher ranks but then her tongue dried at last minute, lips left partially agape. It was a seething surprise- maybe it shouldn’t have even been a surprise, but the fact that her father and the senator were actually familiar with each other still managed to catch her off-guard. The displeasure was quite amusing, though. “Yeah, uh- I know he doesn’t. I would’ve known.” He was probably out of town- doing god knows what, creating more influences, expanding his bussiness. Questioning Renee, perhaps, now that Heather had slipped off her care again. “Just thought that maybe he’d- nevermind. I didn’t expect you two to know each other.” She turned to look at the ocean, concealing the trembling flickers in her gaze. “You enjoying the vacation yourself? Lotsa people must’ve bombarded you with questions.” 

            It was only at function events that Genevieve saw Matthew Alcott and their encounters were never the highlight of her evening. She knew his type, the men of the world whose life was a constant power play in order for him to feel superior. However, he did this by putting others down and had done it to her on more than one occasion. Still, they could still carry themselves with decorum when interacting. They played their own part, dressed in their designer clothes whilst faking smiles towards each other whilst shooting daggers out of their eyes. Those events were attended by savages in suits. “I know his game.” Genevieve wouldn’t say she knew the man, that would imply that they had once being close. “Yes, thank you. My husband and I usually come here, it’s really relaxing.” Pulling a smile towards the young woman, the blonde nodded. “I don’t mind.” If she wanted to be president some day, she would have to get used to answering questions and those questions were going to be a lot harder than the ones posed to her on this trip. “It is beautiful here.”

    although hayden is often satiated in the financial matters, his and his family’s wealth altogether wouldn’t even touch what this woman seems to have in store. a vacation around the world has been assigned once but it was hasty enough he can no longer remember the most memorable and pleasant places. hayden plans to remember it all this time around. soft chocolate hues study, indulging her words without even an inch of skepticism. “it really is. you’re a very generous woman for allowing these people the opportunity to witness all of this. is your husband here?” he questions and offers his hand. “name’s hayden. hayden oliviera.”

   “Hayden.” he repeated back with a nod of her head as she took his hand and shook it firmly. “It’s not a problem, really. Everyone should get the opportunity and it’s a great way for me to meet those whom I will be seeing a great deal of in the future. “No, he’s not. He had some business to attend to and I wasn’t going to keep him from that.” Her marriage was a rocky subject, one that she hoped to sort quickly. Although he appeared at her side when it was necessary, he was rarely there for her and felt like she only gave her job attention... If she wanted to run for president, they needed to stabilise their relationship and most importantly, she needed his GENUINE support.
