Alecâs eyes flicked between her shocked expression and the floor, trying not to be too obvious about his staring, just in case that would give him away, but the smile was still there, lopsided and bright. At her words, Alec gave a final laugh and bumped her shoulder with his, âIâm teasing you, nerd. Although I wish I had more visits from drunk Addie, sheâs so nice.â He pondered out loud as he scratched his chin suggestively. Noticing Addie hadnât moved away from him, Alec rested his arm between his torso and hers, just so that the back of his hand was laid out against her knee. It wasnât much or particularly meaningful, but it was a big change to have someone so close to him again.Â
As she resisted against his offer, and tried to provide explanations for her living arrangements, Alec remained almost still, eyebrows raised slightly, his free hand (as in the hand that wasnât between them) tapping on his leg, which consequently tapped against the floor. When she paused, Alec sighed loudly, his shoulders slumping against the wall uncomfortably. Why was it that he couldnât protect the few important people in his life? First his mother, now Addison? Sure, there had been more people along the way that life had decided to screw over, but why was it that the most important ones were the ones he couldnât defend? âDo you really think you would be bothering me? Addie... Iâm trying really hard, you know Iâm not good at this thing, this...â He gestured with his hand, trying to find a way to describe his lack of communication skills, âbeing totally open thing. Ads... Iâm trying, but you have to try with me. Tell me shit, okay?â Sighing, yet again, the hand that had tapped and gestured combed through his hair in frustration, âYes, of course. I donât see why not, people have roommates all the time. We should be roommates.â Alec replied, knowing fully well that their relationship would never be that simple; denying himself the scary pleasure of calling her his best friend instead. When she finally accepted, Alecâs grin came back lazily, his eyes finding hers, âAnytime, Addie. You know that,â He reassured, âAnd as long as you do some grocery shopping once in a while, maybe refrain from leaving your bras everywhere: weâre good.â Alec mumbled with a slightly playful tone to his voice.Â
He definitely felt more secure about pretending to be her boyfriend with a safe word, and if it made them sound a bit odd, even better. Boring was never for them, anyway. Noticing how he was still grabbing on to her, her eyes on him, Alec nodded awkwardly, âYeah, uhm... great.Fantastic, really,â He continued, distracted by her intense glare, âAre you alright?â
