Before Sunrise Before Sunset Before Midnight

Ah Jesse & Celine!!

In Before Sunrise they meet as 23 year olds on a train and have a stolen night in Vienna. They quickly fall in love but then go their separate ways, vowing to meet up 6 months later in the same spot.

In Before Sunset they meet again in Paris, 9 years later. They’re older, maybe a little wiser but still in love with the other that they met on that one night in Vienna.

I had seen the first two films before and loved them but I wanted to catch up again before watching the final film, Before Midnight….

It’s 9 years later in Greece and they are now on their summer holidays with their children. They seem as in love as ever but the realities of life get in the way and in part of the film we watch them having the kind of argument that I’ve had with my husband in the past. The kind where we love the other person more than anything but it feels like the whole relationship is doomed. Richard Linklater did a great job with the script which was well executed by Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy.

The final instalment was charming, funny, heartbreaking and hopeful and this is now one of my favourite trilogies….. Along with Back to the Future, Toy Story & Chris Nolan’s Batman films.
