so during the bosnian war (which was this nasty-ass conflict in bosnia and herzgovina) there was this badass cello-playing motherfucker named vedran smailovic. He was from Sarajevo, was upset about all the shit and nastiness that came about through this war (this was full-on brother-killing-brother shit!) that he went around to bombed-out, blown up buildings and funderals––where he was at risk of FUCKING SNIPER FIRE––and playing the cello. This guy was so set on providing one tiny spot of beauty in a seriously nasty war he was risking being fucking SHOT OR BLOWN UP.

AND THIS IS THE GUY WHO INSPIRED THIS SONG.

He’s why there’s the calm cello part at the beginning before everything gets all violent-sounding. It’s THEMATIC.

It’s also important to understand that Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 was not originally a Trans Siberian Orchestra song. It was originally recorded by Savatage, a metal band, for their concept album “Dead Winter Dead,” and when some Savatage members formed TSO, they adopted that song as a TSO song because yeah it’s fucking amazing.

Friendly reminder that Vedran’s performances also included a pile of rubble that used to be a fountain IN THE CENTER OF A TOWN SQUARE WITH NO COVER.

When asked years later why he’d down something so apparently suicidal, he shrugged and replied that it was his way of proving that “the spirit of humanity was still alive in that place, despite all evidence to the contrary.”

May we all be as brave and stalwart in protesting violence and injustice as Vedran “The Most Bad-Ass Cellist Ever” Smailović.

Also, despite what some articles may say, Vedran was not an old man when this happened. He’s only in his early 60s today, which would have made him no older than 37 when he was playing in the ruins of Sarajevo. Never let anyone tell you it’s only old men who can make a difference.

House Spirits (our friends)

If spirits are part of your paradigm, I highly recommend introducing yourself and working with your local spirits. I am all about literally everything having a spirit (hello rock, let’s be friends) and also that all those things are one with all the things (animism + pantheism ftw)

anywhoooo I think it’s a great idea to get to be besties with my house spirit, mostly because I do a ton of magic on its land, and I am down with any ooomph it can give me to that business, even if it’s like

This is the way that I said “Hi” to my house spirit, feel free to adapt to any way that makes sense for you. I can totally see how living in an apartment or condo might call for different wording - NB I live in the basement of a house.

I sat in my kitchen, because that’s where I feel most at home in this apartment (also it’s very central and totally felt right). My desk is a close second, but I love cooking while guests hang out, or Jamie and I watch Vampire Diaries, or I’m alone watching youtube, etc. It’s my chill spot. Find your chill spot. Sit there. Yes, on the floor.

Here’s what I said:

See what I did there? Where I told the house how I wanted my message, and made sure it wasn’t totally Lynchian confusing imagery? There’s the acknowledgement of how the house helps me, and also that we have a history. Flowery but repetitive is my style. You do you.

I’m sure there are incense + candle + crystal mixes that someone else might feel, but I was pretty spontaneous and it felt right going without the additional accoutrements. Maybe your place is more formal.

I ended up getting a ton of dreams about protection, so I get that my house is all about keeping everyone safe. Also what felt like a year shoveling the walk. So next snowfall, I’m totally shoveling the walk. 

Be open, and if you have a hard time remembering your dreams maybe ask for a different sign.

I don’t usually soap-box, but I’m going to for a hot sec since this has been on my mind: 

Cults are getting better branding, prettier leaders, hipper-sounding cosmologies, and wider reaches due to social media. They’re not all deity-focused. Thoughtful, intelligent people can get sucked into them. Just…stay safe out there, guys. Do your research, look at all your options, and trust your gut, not groupthink.

I do want to emphasize, again, that cults (and toxic groups with cult-like attributes, I’m using this term pretty loosely) don’t usually look like what you’d expect. A lot of toxic and dangerous religious movements are tiny and you won’t find much about them via Google. Cultish non-religious movements are the same way.

Start-ups, multi-level marketing companies, activist groups, fan groups, political groups, and internet mystics who run retreats can all be cult-like and dangerous. Tune your BS detector, ask family, friends, and experts for advice.

Here are some warning signs:

Pressure – pressure to make quick decisions, to give (or pledge) considerable amounts of money, to move in with a group, to abandon family or cut off friends. Elevated Leaders – anyone claiming special insight, special powers, or that they aren’t human. Demanding special treatment (compared to other followers). Misuse of funds or money collecting at the top. physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse. Lack of accountability or oversight. Isolation – encouraging (or requiring) members to cut off family relationships, friendships with those outside of the group, leaving jobs, moving to isolated areas, taking away communication methods. Strong “us-vs-them” mentality. Vilification of ex-members. Love-bombing. Altered states of consciousness – long work hours, sleep deprivation, lack of access to adequate food or water. Otherwise unproblematic activities like meditation/prayer/chanting, but done for hours. Discouraging doubt – discouraging or punishing doubt and critical thinking.

I have tons of jumpers and can drop the whole deck if I’m not paying attention. As a result, I’ve started “resetting” my deck between readings. It’s quicker than I expected to put the cards all back in order, and the benefit is that I get to see that all the cards are still in the deck. Since I do this regularly, I know where to look if a card is missing. 

Added benefit: it’s a really good way to cleanse the energy of the deck.
