Pocahontas: Something new you taught someone.

I had to teach Papa how to use a smartphone. 

As much of a nightmare as you’d expect. He’s um, not proficient... but he gets by.

Ariel: Where do you think you belong, and why?

I... I guess I never really thought where I belonged. I just thought I wouldn’t want to be here, in Bishop, forever. 

But saying I belong somewhere... I dunno. My instinct is to say with Papa, but. I just don’t want that. 

I guess I’ve never thought about it like that before...

That’s because I’m obviously his favorite kid.

You might be his favorite now, but keep skipping on dinner and soon Papa might promote me to favorite.

I guess I really miss Papa. Usually I see him every day, so it’s a bit eerie to not see him for a bit.

I feel like I love everything that reminds me of my childhood. I’m really sentimental.

I would make Yale give me a full scholarship.

Every day. It helps me focus. Either for stocking shelves, or studying.

It really is isn’t it? I love any chance to just get away for a short time. Even for a school trip. 

Oh my gosh I know what you mean. I feel so trapped in Bishop sometimes! I worry sometimes I might be stuck in that town forever! I just have to keep praying for those scholarships.

Yes! Oh my god. That would be so amazing. You could go, right? I mean, outside of school, you have the money. I would get out of here if I could pay for it... there’s a whole world out there.

Yeah, well, I’m no Zoe, but when you have a job like that you say ‘hi’ to everyone once. 

Most people just know my Pa’ to be honest. He runs the store, and basically everyone loves him. You should say hi next time you’re at the store.

We have to go on these things! And the boys just complain all the time. Better to find the fun in it! Men, right? 

How is everything going with you and Soren? Still the promised couple?

Yeah, that’s true. Charleston isn’t exactly my number one destination but it was a change of pace.

Where is your number one? I would think Bishop would be home for you most of all. The entire city is yours.

Oh, by the way, Papa offered to have you over, um, the night after we get back I think? I’d have to check. He said something like, he really wanted to make  feijoada, and he thought you would be a good helper. 

He didn’t even ask me!

The shop? Is that where you work? And yeah, I have. Yet I’m still stuck in Bishop of all places.

Bishop seems to have it’s own way of trapping people. It can be nice, a small town... but, I dunno, a bit suffocating.

Yeah, My Papa owns the shop, so I help out a lot. It’s a good way to get to know everyone.

Yeah, but those cool things were built on the sad things. Every pretty building is built on the back of slaves. The shitty people are in the walls.

Hard work by millions of unrecognized people are in the walls. The atrocities done by white people, that’s important. But that shouldn’t be the focus. Not anymore.

Bit grim that they make these stupid school trips compulsory. 

It’s an experience. I’m thankful to get out and have these things, otherwise I’d be stuck at the shop my whole life. You’re lucky. You've gotten so see a lot of cool places.

Let’s focus on the cool for right now. The tour of the plantation was, like, super depressing. I’ll be thinking about that for a while.
