Dog, Paul McCartney and Dutch abstract expressionist, Willem De Kooning at the latter’s house in East Hampton in 1983. Photo by Linda McCartney.
McCartney and De Kooning had similar work methods. One was what De Kooning called “exploring the accident”, where instead of erasing a mistake during painting, you jump on it to see where it leads to. Paul took a similar approach with his music, most notably with The Beatles of course: the feedback buzz at the start of “I Feel Fine” was a mistake for example, as was the rattling bottle at the end of “Long, Long, Long”.
