When I was a kid, I always wanted to be an adult

I wanted to be a grown up,

Get ready,

Go out

Feel a little funky

Dance a lot,

Have a career,

have something I'm good at.

I wanted to be tall

and be strong

I wanted to speak in a way that sounded smart

I wanted to understand everything they understood.

The adults.

I looked forward to saying no,

and doing whatever I want.

Being a kid was so stupid.

Having no control,

Have people tell you right from wrong,

Like they even know what the difference is themselves.

You can't talk back,

Can't speak up.

Well then.

I did it,

I became the adult.

I grew up.

I woke up.

A haze as a kid I never knew before,

Was lifted.

And I knew everything.

I know how broken I am now.

How love was never real.

How nothing they told me was right, is.

How wrong things aren't so wrong.

Now I understand.

I understand how adults break you when you're young,

And you never get better.

They tell you when you're young you have no power.

But all they did was take it from you.

And then give you all the responsibility when you get older.

They break you,

So you have to fix yourself in ten fucking years.

They say "You have to work on your self-worth"

"You have to be better"

"You have to choose a career"

"You have to resist temptation"

"You have to control your feelings"

After men beat you at 8,

And parents ruin you by 13.

Everything just seems fucking useless.
