The World Cup... Kinda // Elise & Alexei
"Training to be the next Neymar already, are you?" Elise asked with a slight grin on her face. St. Maryâs was at its prettiest two times a year: winter afternoons during a light snowfall and summer nights just before rain clouds were rumored to come in. You could feel the air become more dense as the humidity went up, and it was a matter of time before storm clouds started rolling in. Light carried around campus easily, causing a sort of glowing look around campus as lamps in dorm rooms and lights along paths mixed with tiny droplets in the mist. She glanced down at their hands as he looped his fingers into hers. Doing her best to hide the huge grin on her face, she walked along with her hand in his. Something about it all made her heart race, but it wasnât the possibility of getting caught out after hours. In fact, she wasnât worried about that in the slightest, because she was with him. "It doesnât sound so bad, you knowâ doing what you love all day. Soccer, I mean," she nodded, sighing as she kept her eyes locked ahead.
Elise was never one to tell someone else that she needed help; in fact, she was always the one offering helpâ which was why her illness would get so irrational. Truth be told, she wasnât in France the entire time she was gone. Part of it was spent in a hospital bed with needles in her arms and tubes up her noseâ but she certainly didnât plan on talking about that. âUnless I want to make you jealous?â She said, scrunching her nose up at his words, âeven if European guys did hit on me, you really have no reason to be jealous⌠because Iâm here, arenât I? With you. Though I did meet a few guys who were quite good at, uh, football, so youâve got a lot to live up to these next few practices, Wood.â She looked up at him and grinned, hoping he would catch on to the way she was only joking around. âFrance wasâ interesting. Thereâs so much history there that I almost suffocated, and Dad freaked out any time anyone referred to it as La Ville de LâAmour. It wasnât home though, and as strange as this soundsâ I kinda missed being here,â she nodded, scanning their surroundings to see if theyâd gotten any closer to the field, âIâm just hoping I didnât miss too much.â
âYou caught me,â Alexei said softly, a bit of shyness lacing his voice. He could feel the air grow thick around him, the humidity bringing a tiny bead of sweat to his right temple. Heâd often experienced this when he would sneak out to the soccer field late at night. While it certainly wasnât a secret that he would often do so, but people tended to assume that he did so because he wanted to practice more. The truth was that it was his place, his home away from home. Whether it was pouring or snowing, the soccer field was the only place he felt completely at peace. And now it was something he was sharing with the girl that had captivated his attention since freshman year. She just didnât know the significance of it yet.  As the small droplets of rain began to fall around them, Alexei couldnât help but smile. Instead of saying anything, he just squeezed her hand a little. Part of him wanted to give her reassurance that he wasnât about to let go of her hand. The other part, well, that was the part of Alexei that was afraid that she was going to slip away from him and he wanted to keep her as close as possible. âIf I was doing what I loved to do all day, Lis, Iâd be spending time with you,â he sighed, absent-mindedly spilling the truth from his lips.
He turned to her, his chocolate eyes once again trying to focus in the dark. Just as he did so, he saw the smaller brunette scrunch her nose and he let out a soft chuckle. âYou are here with me, but it doesnât mean Iâm any less jealous. See, they got to see you in the moments I didnât, in the moments I missed you most. Oh, really? Well, in that case, Lancaster, you can bet that Iâll step my game way up.â As they neared the fence that circled around the field, Alexei let his duffle bag drop off of his shoulder and caught the strap in his free hand. âIf your dad is freaking out about La Ville de LâAmour, wait until he sees you walkinâ âround campus with me.â Alexei winked at her a final time before opening the gate that lead to the back of the field and pushing it forward. Gently, he guided her onto the field, making sure she wouldnât trip or fall on the wet grass. âYou didnât miss anything. The world stops when youâre gone, Miss Lancaster.â The words were true, Alexei felt like things moved slower when she wasnât around. Maybe it was because of his crush, or maybe it was because Elise actually made everything more bearable just by breathing. Taking a few more steps forward, he placed his bag on the ground, crouching down before it. The sound of the zipper being undone practically echoed in the empty night air and he cringed a little at how loud it seemed. âReady?,â he asked as he sprang up, tossing the ball gently a few feet in front of him. He walked a few paces towards Elise and stopped when he was standing behind her, slowly and gently placing his hands on her hips. âWant me to show you how to be the Posh to my Beckham?â
