Bruce Wayne: The Road Home is a comic that is almost devastating.
Bruce disappeared into time, and he had to fight like hell for what must have felt like months to come back home. As he does so, fighting monsters outside of comprehension, morphing with time beings, surviving the entire history of Gotham he finally has a realization: he's not alone. He never has been. He's always relied on other people. (Which as an arc from like Hush to Under the Hood to Batman RIP is like so good).
Then he gets back and checks in on everyone, and they haven't had the same experience. Everyone is doing good, maybe even better. Dick is a fantastic Batman and he's even managed to help Damian. Stephanie has reintegrated as a vigilante, developed her own style, working with a group of people who love her. Barbara has direction. Selina has found herself. Tim has crafted himself a mantle outside Robin making his own choices. On and on, he sees his community and there not just well there fantastic (at least by vigilante standards).
And it's like do they need him? What a tragic series of events to realize that you've always needed everyone around you the moment they have proof they don't need you.
Except it's not true. We know it's not true and he knows it's not true. Or more, it's not the right way to phrase the question. Do they need bruce!Batman? Maybe not, but do they want Bruce, more then anything? Yeah, absolutely.
With only a suspicion that he's alive Tim fights tooth and nail across the globe to find proof that he is. Dick gets an inkling a Lazarus Pit could help and breaking taboo (and his own advice to Tim just a few months earlier) tries to bring him back to life. Damian is constantly invoking his name and legacy, desperate for someone to tell him anything about his father. The Justice League battles through time and space, ripping apart multidimensional entities to find him.
And when he returns, even people he was on the outs with are happy to see him. Stephanie slaps him, says she doesn't need his approval, but it's so clear she's happy that he's alive and back.
So, no, maybe they don't need Batman, but they do want Bruce. And like, what an honor to know for a fact that your family wants you around just because they love you.
