OH GOOD. I AM HAPPY TO. Tbh I wrote this when I made that gifset, but I didn’t want to clutter the gifset, so I wrote that tag in hopes somebody would ask, and here we are :3
Let me tell you guys a thing about this scene. I have analyzed this scene a billion times, and I think people don’t realize the thing about Amber and Alfie in this scene. Amber grows so much as a person in this one little moment. Before, Amber was selfishly using Alfie, and we all can admit that it was wrong of her. But in this moment. THIS MOMENT UGH. She realizes how wrong she was to use him. She realizes how much she truly cares for this boy, and if anything were to happen to him she would never forgive herself.
So, Amber selflessly goes in after Alfie. She barely gave it a second thought because saving Alfie is more important than anything. It is even more apparent because as soon as she was in the tunnel, she was terrified. She didn’t realize what she got herself into until after she went it. She risked it all to save her best guy friend. And at the same time, even though she is scared out of her mind, she’s still talking to Alfie. She’s still trying to make sure she can still talk to Alfie in the same old way. “There’s bugs, Alfie. Bugs.“ There is nothing more to be said because Alfie knows everything about this girl. He knows that she hates bugs. Still, she keeps going. Despite one of her biggest fears, she goes to help Alfie. But she is finally at her breaking point and she calls her friends for help.
Even when she does call for help, she’s still more focused on Alfie than she is for herself. She is terrified, not because she’s in this situation, but because of Alfie. She does need somebody to help her get out, she needs somebody to help her save him! She calls his name out while she has reached rock bottom. When Fabian says “I’m going to get you out” Amber shakes her head. She shakes her head! It’s like “no, I need to save him.” She is frozen by fear, but then Fabian says “I need you to move!” and she realizes that she can’t be Alfie’s hero. He can’t be saved by her. It has to be by somebody else, and it has to be quickly.
Finally, as Alfie comes out of the tunnel, she apologizes. That apology holds every apology she needs to give. I’m sorry for using you. I’m sorry I wouldn’t give you a chance. I’m sorry I was a bad girlfriend. I’m sorry I didn’t let you break up with me. I’m sorry I made you go into the tunnel. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. I’m so sorry. But Alfie doesn’t care about any of that stuff anymore. He just experienced something traumatic. All he wants is to take comfort and sanctuary in Amber’s arms. He doesn’t go out and thank Fabian or run off into the corner and cry. He goes to Amber — the girl he loves — because despite their relationship not working out, there is no doubt in his mind that he has been in love with this girl since day one. And this is not some friend hug. This is not a hug between people that don’t care. He is clutching to her with dear life, not wanting to let go for anything. And they are 100% tearing up.
We see Amber, later, finally letting Alfie go by “breaking up with him.” That shows that the growth of that moment wasn’t just in the moment. It would follow her into the decisions she would make from then on. She finally realizes that she can’t just hold on to him like that. She is confused about her feelings, but she knows that if she doesn’t let him go, they both could get hurt. And she’s nervous to tell him that. We find out that when Amber clutches the amulet, it’s because it’s comforting and her lucky charm. She needed to feel comfortable during that scene because letting go of somebody you care about is hard. But she does it. And Alfie, I think, appreciates that moment for growth. After making his usual “I broke up with you” bit, he realizes that this might not have been easy for her, so he lets it go.
And even though they just broke up, this was the beginning of the growth that starts a chain reaction to bringing out beloved Amfie back together.
And this analysis is just skimming the surface.
