After the annual Christmas Hike 2017, I am tired, happy and filled with the Christmas spirit. It was an intense weekend from Friday with the youngest (8 to 10 year olds) to Saturday filled with activities that the 14 to 17 year olds planned (us rovers helped ofcourse). Sunday was for cleaning and going home. It was very fun and enjoyable but I also realized that something has to change for next year. There has to be more new stations: most of the oldest (that I am a leader for) have done the some of the stations over and over again. It gets boring in the end. The station I was responsible for (make a “trefot”) was flawed as the youngest kids had not gone through it before which meant I had to come up with a new plan. Luckily enough, there was no points awarded as it was not a competition. But the concept at the moment is definitely flawed, which means we have to think more creatively next year.

For this meeting we had the topic of human rights. I came up with the activity of them having to rate different people of who to sit next to in a train from Moscow to Lissabon. We then discussed why and how this affects scouting. Very intellectual thoughts and ideas (for them being twelve years old)

Todays theme was theatre! The scouts had chosen a list of words that I compiled and created a play from. They enjoyed themselves while practicing and so we will see what the end product at the Christmas Hike

It was time for the annual scouts christmas market! As previous years, I was Santa Clause handing out sweets to children which was really fun but still challenging to a certain degree when it comes to meeting other people. Not everyone is as nice as others (despite it being Christmas time) and some people are just greedy (to put it bluntly). But it is worth it in the end when you meet a kid who’s eyes lit up when they see Santa and you can see them asking their parents if it “is really him.” It feels really good doing this and to support our “scout business” so we can send younger scouts to camp coming years.

Hike with the younger scouts! We hiked out to our cabin outside of Simlångsdalen where we mostly ate and practiced our outdoor cooking skills.

There would be no productive meeting without some games and play! Because most of the kids cant sit down for longer periods of time, there has to be some physical activity inbetween. Afterwards the scouts planned the upcoming hike.

My third (and sadly, last) open house. As always, it was fun talking about IB with ninth graders and their parents. Kind of bittersweet it is all coming to an end soon..

It was time for the (now) annual “Alice hike!” This is the hike I plan completely by my self where I send clues to one in the group of where to go next (kinda like following bread crumbs). At each stop, a challenge is needed. For example, at one stop they had to make a commercial of something in their pack. Because of so many new scouts, not everyone was used to walk for so long but in the end we took the bus out to the beach where we put up a tent and slept to the sound of waves (would recommend). Even if not everyone was an experienced hiker (one had 1kg nutella in their pack??) and some had a little homesickness, it still worked out and it seemed like everyone had a great time. They seemed to appreciate the stops and laughed a lot. These kind of hikes really help me grow as a leader and a scout as it challenges me to not think that everyone likes hiking (for example). Scouting is about adapting to everyones needs, so when someone needs to take a short break, then that is ok. I am looking forward to more hikes in the future with these kids!

Time for the annual district meeting with all the troops in Halland! This is where we look over what happened over the scout year and plan for next year. We also have petitions and discussions. It is kinda like scout politics.

Yoga time for the 5th week in a row! Yoga always calms me down and I am able to focus more throughout the day (even if I have to wake up at 6)

In preparation for the new scout year, the leaders of our troop had a day of activities (for bonding and to get to each other better). We threw axes at bulls eye and learned about knifes and axes. We also canoed to test the canoes (in case some needed fixing) But mostly it was about team building.
