The fact that Billy died because he finally pushed a 'Lenny' to stop being a "poof" and get violent.

Like, I feel like there's poetry here, but given other things in the show I have to assume it's accidental. Because if that was intentional, what did it even mean? That Hughie was better than Lenny? That he'd successfully done his 'coming of age' journey and grown up enough to kill a friend? Was the real tragedy just that Lenny never lived long enough to get violent? Or he didn't get violent enough to survive, like Billy did?

I rewatched the scene covering Lenny's suicide, and that actually suggests that it was eventually going to come down to Billy's life or Hughie's - or Billy saw it that way, in his worst thoughts. So...he was always going to kill Hughie, if he lived? At some point? He was just like his dad? It was a triumph that Hughie managed to survive him? That makes the nice funeral they had for him feel even more tonally off.

I think it makes more sense if you consider Hughie isn't *just* Lenny, narratively, he's the combination of all of Butcher's canaries. He's Lenny, Becca and Kessler, rolled into one.

Lenny died because Butcher failed to protect him, Becca died not knowing whether to trust him or not (despite choosing to do so in the end), and Kessler died trying to get him to see reason and not get everyone killed.

Butcher then successfully protected Hughie, who trusted him the whole way through, and who got him to see reason and not cause the genocide his tumor convinced him of causing.

I'm sorry I have way too many thoughts about Butcher and his canaries and I found your post very interesting so I wanted to add my two cents.

This. Hughie being the combination of all Butcher’s canaries and the only one managed to stop him but at the price of Butcher’s life himself. 😭😭😭 Still, Butcher stopped cuz he wanted Hughie to be the canary who survived his coal mine. Damn I have so many feelings about them.

Hughie asked Butcher if is there any part of him left still human in the start of ss5 just to end up telling him “You are not a monster, it just hurts to be human” at the end is pure poetry. 😭😭😭 Why so angsty beautiful and so doomed?

man i dunno friendos i would just really like for the idealistic sunshine character to retain some of that sunshine when the dust settles just this once, y'know? character development through disillusionment and moral failings is all well and good and i'm not saying she should end up back where she started but someone needs to put some hope back in this woman or I will cry about it
