The most important thing about mulder and scully’s relationship is that mulder is the kind of weird that comes from MULTIPLE competing undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. Canonically the only therapy he gets is hypnotism based and even then only really the memory recovery aspect and that’s because I can only assume his parents shunted him from therapist to therapist until he found one whose window he didn’t immediately throw himself through. So just like an odd guy, definitely a little unsocialized from spending middle through high school as the guy that claimed aliens abducted his sister. And scully is immensely, immensely charmed by these oddities. They do slight of hand magic to impress each other. She giggles and kicks her feet when he cheats at a basketball game to impress her and then calls her “home girl”. He makes bad jokes. He’s seen the same movie 42 times. He makes slideshows literally just for her. He’s bat-crap crazy. Doesn’t matter. That’s her bestie. She loves that guy.
